Sparking My Sixties

Since retiring from teaching, I have slowly "found" 30 pounds I need to lose. I plan to replace my favorite sugary/salty treats with fresh fruits and veggies. I want to walk at least 1000 steps a day. It seems that 1000 steps was way too low...I do that many just completing my morning housework routine. So, goal is now 5000 steps a day.

I am an avid member of the "Hoosier Nation"---Indiana University alumni and fan for those outside the area. Drive from Illinois to Bloomington ...

My Goals:
1) Get down to 121 pounds by Christmas.
Did NOT make it by Christmas...family illnesses, hospital stays, etc....excuses, excuses, excuses. Aiming for July 4th.
Did NOT make it by the 4th. Refuse to get discouraged. Feeling better even if scale does not reflect. Can walk farther and longer without getting winded.

2) Eat at least 5 fruits/veggies a day.

3) Walk at least 5000 steps a day.

4) Interact more with people.
Getting better.

5) Sleep at least 7 hours a night.

My Program:
1) Joined SparkPeople!!!

2) Tracking nutrition and fitness.

3) Joined a knitting class.

4) Refusing to buy "junk" food. Removing what I already have in cabinets.

5) Self-imposed "curfew" or midnight bedtime.

6) Looking for a Tai Chi class for seniors.
Found one near-by and started weekly classes.
"Moved" too slowly for me. Looking for another class...maybe water aerobics.

Personal Information:
Grew up in cental Indiana but now live in Illinois.

My husband died about 9 years ago from colorectal cancer.

Have 3 fantastic adult children that now help "look after" me.

Have one "miracle" grandchild that in many ways gave me back my "spark" to live.

My father died New Year's Eve, 2012. Feeling rather detached from life/living right now.

Other Information:
Graduated from Indiana University.

Taught Special Education (Behavior Disorders) for 27 years.

Love to knit, read, camp, help others, and be with familty.

Hate housework and hypocrites.
