That's funny my Mom had a pet chicken too! lol Of course you could have an enclosed set up like a catio, which I am planning to build off of my deck, so my cats can get more sunshine and fresh air, other than the slider and windows.
I loved my parrot, his name was DJ, and I have very fond memories of all the things I TAUGHT HIM, my ex never took the time. His new wife hated him, not sure what he finally did with him, I guess giving him back to me wasn't an option. He used to laugh just like I did, probably didn't set well with the new cheater wife. (it's been awhile but it still hurts me alot)
Yeah as babys I would keep in the house with a bird cage for any baby chickens or Emu's I may have in the future. But that would be a future plan, unless I can house them outside. I am one to make sure they have something to heat or cool their house! lol

btw your little soiree of critters is so fun to me, I would be rehoming as well. I don't even kill flys, everything goes back outside. I have a pet scorpion, that lives under my porch, he controls a lot of the riff raff that comes through, I just give him his space. I had to move some stuff to clean leaves off the porch, and he walked off "indignant" and his tail straight up in the air, very unhappy guy! lol
His name is powder (he's transparent)

Having an Emu like Sammy is a dream for me. I would have to do so much to have something like him. My fence is a short chain length. I have a third of an acre, I could enclose the back yard because the fence heights are 6'. But finances wouldn't let me and I have too many irons in the fire at this time. I guess I will have to admire from afar. I checked into how to obtain one, and you have to buy them in pairs in egg form. I would prefer a chick. Oh well I will stick with maybe chickens someday. But the predators are really hungry right now. None of my cats go outdoors anymore. With our drought here in California, all the food and water is scarce for them. Hopefully everything will change in the future.
I used to have a parrot, but my husband took him in our divorce. He moved with a job, and I was supposed to move up with him when I was able to, and he took the parrot and then told me he wanted to leave me. So I lost my bird love. :( Now I have cats! lol

Sammy is so adorable. Ok I live in the desert, how do you acquire one of these? And what all is included in their upkeep? How does he do with heat? I love your Sammy so much, I am aching to have one of my own, but everything has to be accommodating here at my home to have one. One thing he/She would be in a barn stall or something of that nature when I am not home or away. I would totally want the bird safe from predators.

Glad those issues got resolved! And I'm also glad the challenge is over! I am one of those that gained "a tad" as Jen so graciously put it. I've actually been doing better since the challenge ended. It seemed to just add to my stress load!

I like your yucca!
