One step at a time

I'm Mary and I'm here to get healthy and strong and to lose weight. Today 3/31/14 I'm starting fresh. I've been on and off this bandwagon for years. This time I mean to make it stick. I lost my Dad last year too early because he didn't take care of himself. I've gone through a year of feeling sorry for myself etc and it's time to cut it out. I'm going to be 50 this year so it's time to get healthy and stop looking for excuses.

I'm Mary and I'm here to get healthy and strong and to lose weight. Today 3/31/14 I'm starting fresh. I've been on and off this bandwagon for years. This time I mean to make it stick. I lost my Dad last year too early because he didn't take care of himself. I've gone through a year of feeling sorry for myself etc and it's time to cut it out. I'm going to be 50 this year so it's time to get healthy and stop looking for excuses.

I'm challenged in this because I have moderate to severe debilitating arthritis in my hips and lower back. Because of years of ignoring the pain or walking through the pain I have chronic back pain and problems. I am seeing a regular doctor, an osteopath and a chiropractor. Soon I will be adding a pain management specialist to the list. I'm not thrilled about this but I'm doing what I need to do to address these issues and try to get healthy.

I have a new GP and he is working with me on all of this. He has increased my BP meds which I hate. With the size I am and the foods I have been consuming for years I should be diabetic or at the very least pre-diabetic but I'm not. My blood sugar is awesome, my triglycerides are just short of being on the high side, my cholesterol is good overall but my good needs to come up ten points to be ideal. Until two year ago I wasn't on any medication - now I take just the BP meds the doctor prescribed last year when my father became ill and my new doctor just doubled my dosage. Not happy about that. I'm a purist and I don't like to take anything unless it is absolutely necessary but if I'm going to get past this I'm going to need pharma help.

I have achilles tendonitis that is not repairable by surgery. It doesn't hurt most of the time except when I exercise. The doctor said elliptical is the only thing he wants me using - no treadmill.

So all of the above is in some part due to my weight. I know that the arthritis would have probably happened regardless but it wouldn't be now and it wouldn't be this severe if I wasn't carrying so much weight. Same with the achilles. I caused these issues by ignoring my weight challenges and continuing to allow my mind to control my eating habits. It's not my hunger - I never get hungry - it is my need to stress eat and my love of food. Sadly I probably eat less food overall than some of my more fit and healthy friends but my metabolism is so messed up that it just sits on my body as fat. I can guarantee you I do not eat enough food to sustain my size on a daily basis - at least not what the "experts" say I do. I have a lot of weight to lose and this is going to be a journey.

My Goals:
Hit my goal weight.

Reduce my BMI to healthy number.

Learn to eat healthy.

Be able to sit between my knees on the floor.

Cross my legs.

Run up the stairs.

Walk on a trail.

Climb a hill without having to stop and rest.

Be noticed for something other than my size.



My Program:
I'm logging what I eat to make sure I'm getting the right ratio etc. I'm eating lots of vegetables and fruits every day. I'm avoiding processed foods as much as possible. I'm cutting fast food out completely. I'm fixing my breakfast, lunch and dinner every day so I'm not tempted to stop on the way home or on the way to work.

I'm from Missouri and I'm 49 years old. I have a 27 year old daughter who is fit, healthy and strong living in New York. I re-started my lifestyle change on March 31, 2014

Hello there - lovely to"see" you. How's it going? I hope all is well.
We have glorious weather - 19c - so I've spent loads of time in the garden. I've dug most of it over and need to think about which seeds to plant and get the other pond finished - finished or not, the frogs have moved in and left their mark. They'll be loads of tadpoles this year.
