I'm so grateful to Pamela for inviting me to join the Done Girl team because that's where I learned about FIWC! It's the first ever challenge I've joined on SparkPeople, and it's taken me a long time to become this committed. I quit smoking on July 25, 2009, and I feel more empowered each day that I make the choice to not pick up a cigarette! So, why stop there!? I will NOT let my past define my future. I will, however, leave it there to reflect on and see how far I've come.

Upon joining over 2 years ago~April 2007:

My name is Mary. I am a single mom of an 11 year old boy. I turned 30 this past September, and I am really scared about my health. For the better part of the last 11 years, I have been overweight. There's been a few instances of significant weight loss here and there, but I have never been able to make it last. There are a lot of reasons that I failed to maintain my previous weight loss. Bottom line, though, I am now ready to make the changes in my life that are necessary to be healthy. Both of my parents are Type II diabetic, and my fate is the same if I don't get it together.

September 1, 2008~UPDATE:

Well, it's September again, and I still weigh the same as when I started here...a pound more to be exact! That's okay, though, because if it weren't for this site and all the wonderful people that I've met here I would be weighing many pounds more than I do now. Maintaining is an accomplishment, and I'm going to treat myself accordingly! I've learned a lot this year, and one of those things is that beating myself up over my slip-ups is not the way to go. All that accomplishes is making it longer before I refocus my energy on the positive changes that I'm making in my life. That's what this is about...a lifestyle change...not being on a diet! I turn 31 years old in 12 days, and this is going to be my year for BIG changes! I'm here to stay, and I'm taking care of myself...body, mind, & soul!

January 22, 2009~UPDATE:

Ugh. Well, so far...no big changes...no good ones anyway. My grandmother died 11 days after my last post...just an hour after my birthday had passed. That, among other things, sent me into a spiral, and I hopped off the bandwagon COMPLETELY! I'm still not giving up, though. I know that if I keep at it I will eventually reach my goals. I really feel like this year is a new beginning in SO many ways. I am making small changes & taking it one day at a time.

June 24, 2009~UPDATE:

Still at it!!! I will NEVER quit! It can be done. It will be done. It is being done. It will take time...LOTS of time...the rest of my life, in fact, if I am to maintain it! Slowly but surely healthy living will become me. It must!!!

I love my classes when they're not stressing me out. I actually enjoy tutoring chemistry. I have a 13 year old boy who I love dearly and who tests me on a daily basis. I love all kinds of music, television shows, movies, and books. I am working on figuring out how to make all these activities ACTIVE, so I can still enjoy them but be healthy, too. I look forward to becoming physically fit and able to enjoy the truly active things in life like camping, hiking, running, skating, swimming, etc. I quit smoking on July 25, 2009, and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made! Now to make more of those...
