Hello. My name is Melissa. Wife since 2003 and mother of a very active son born in 2004 and recently had my daughter in June 2009....

This is my story.....

During my childhood, I was "normal". I come from a very tall, slender, and lean family. Around the age of 9, I got very sick and the doctors did not think that I was going to live. I had a liver disease and the damage was extreme. They said that I needed a liver transplant. The doctors stabilized me and I was sent home. I was pulled out of physically active classes and activities, so that I or others did not accidentally hurt myself.

At this point, I started gaining. Slowing, not very much, but I was losing the slender me. At the age of 14, I had a liver transplant. (2 days before year book day in 8th grade, I was pissed! LOL) I recovered pretty quick from the surgery, but was put on lots of medication and I was still not participating in any physically active classes or teams. By my 9th grade promotion, I was at 180lbs. Looking back now, I know that I was on a lot of medication that caused weight gain and water retention. Lame.

I was chubby through high school. (I believe I was between 180 at the beginning of HS and my lowest was about 170) But shortly after I graduated and being the social butterfly that I was, I found my favorite activity. I went dancing! A lot! Oh the fun and the freedom that I have when I go dancing with friends. For the next 2.5 - 3 years, that I was I did often, multiple times a week. At this point I made it down to 150.

I met my husband in 2002. We dated for just about a year and married in 2003. After only being married for 4 months, I get pregnant. I had the "I can eat what I want, I am pregnant" mind frame. And well, it backfired. I gained about 70lbs. I think I was at 230 at my biggest.

I trudged along at this weight forever. It was almost like I was numb. I didnt really realize what was going on. In 2005, my work sent me on a trip to Paris. How cool is that?!? But, while we were there we did a lot of walking. That was my wake up call. I was miserable with myself. I struggled to keep up. I did not look professional. It was horrible.

Between 2005 and 2008, I was on and off working out and eating differently, in spurts. Nothing very consistent. I was able to get down to about 200.

I got pregnant with my 2nd child Sep of 2008. At the beginning of the pregnancy, I lost weight. I only gained about 36lbs through the entire pregnancy. I was NOT going to let what happened the first time happen again. I watched what I ate and everything. I felt accomplished.

June of 2009, my little girl was born. When I returned to work 3 months later, I had lost all but 8lbs of my pre-pregnancy weight. I felt awesome.

For me, it feels like I am on a yo-yo. Its been hard. Also, its been hard being the "fat" sister, well the "fat" sibling. I am not going to be that anymore!!

Since October 2009, I have been using SparkPeople and I LOVE it. I also have a great support system at work and at home.

Since October, I feel like I know what I need to do know. When I stick with the program, I see results and when I dont, I dont have anyone else to blame but myself. I have learned how to get myself back up and brush myself off.

I will continue on this path. I will continue to have progress. I will find the happy healthy me inside.
