OMG, I'm not human!
All my life, I've struggled with my weight. From my first diet at age 7, through nagging from family, teasing from friends, to Weight Watchers, Weight Loss Clinic, TOPS, a rainbow of diet pills, shakes, bars, counseling, self awareness groups, you name it, I've done it. Most of it worked, for awhile, but I gained back more. Well meaning people said I carried my weight well (whatever that means) so I deluded myself into thinking I didn't look so awful. All my life, I've struggled with my weight. From my first diet at age 7, through nagging from family, teasing from friends, to Weight Watchers, Weight Loss Clinic, TOPS, a rainbow of diet pills, shakes, bars, counseling, self awareness groups, you name it, I've done it. Most of it worked, for awhile, but I gained back more. Well meaning people said I carried my weight well (whatever that means) so I deluded myself into thinking I didn't look so awful. But seeing 300 lbs looming on my doctor's scales was a real wake up call. I was actually researching weight loss surgery when I found a link to Sparkpeople and decided to join in August 07. By January 08, I'd lost 38 pounds, then plateau-ed for a month or so, but since March 08, the honeymoon is over. I've yo-yo-ed with 5 lbs, then 7, now (June 2010) nearly all of it has crept back. I'm still hanging in with SP though, and joined TOPS in Sept. 08. That helped me refocus for awhile, but a year and a half later I'm still spinning my wheels. What's sad is the 100 lbs I say I want to lose would be gone by now if I'd really worked at it.
Feb. 24 2011 - The spinning wheels have officially stopped. This is the year I'm going to do it! My goal is to wear my wedding dress at our 25th anniversary on May 2, 2012, which means 70 lbs off in 14 months - 5 lbs a month. That is definitely do- able & I'm gonna do it!
2012 update: Got down to 239 lbs for our anniversary celebration in May - not nearly enough to wear my wedding dress, a major disappointment. And what do I do when disappointed? Eat! Yo-yo'ed all summer, but the weight was creeping back on. Managed to put on the brakes before gaining it all back and am now on the downward trend, but man is it tough! Suffering with chronic back pain isn't helping. Thank God for SP!
Jan. 3, 2013 - Will this be the year? I'm stuck at 254 lbs & hanging on by my fingernails. Time to set another goal & start again.
January 3, 2014. Well, 2013 wasn't the year as I'm ending it 4 lbs higher & spent most of it bouncing up and down the same 3 to 5 pounds. Note to self - Maintenance is AFTER you lost the weight not BEFORE. Lots of excuses I could offer, but the truth is I don't really try. Setting goals - no problem! Working on them - quite another story. I want to weigh 225 in time for my university's 225th anniversary reunion. If I lose one pound a week from now to then, I can do it. But will I?

Daily cals: 1430-1780
Follow SP guidelines;
Weigh/measure all foods, strict portion control
Record on the SP tracker;
Work on changing habits such as mindless nibbling.
walk 30 mins 3x per week minimum
My 5% fall Challenge Goal is to keep a food journal & weigh under 250 lbs at the end.
I live on a mixed farm in Manitoba, Canada with my hubby & Brian the cat. Retired in 1998 from a 30 year career in museums & communications; Now keep busy with volunteering, singing & generally keeping the home fires burning.
Music is a big part of my life. I am part-time organist at my church and sing alto & act in a amateur musical theatre group.

Thanks for the birthday wishes and manicure... I could sure use one! I can never seem to keep my gardening gloves on... I take them off to do "one little thing" and then find them half an hour later.

Hey, Charlotte, did you go away on a trip? Maybe I just forgot. How was it? Hope you had good weather. I know yours was miserably hot and humid all summer. Ours was rainy. Otherwise, enjoyable. Didn't do everything I wanted, but then who cares...?
You can still get on the Challenge if you want to. Won't start until late September.

- Moffat - woolen mills, Grey Mare's Tail waterfall. We stayed at B&B run by Heather Quigley, and she was so nice, we still write once or twice a year

- Edinburgh, Stirling and Doune castles

More... don't know what happened, but computer wouldn't let me go on...
- good small hotel, Battlesteads Inn, near Hadrian's Wall.
- Thirsk - if you've read the James Herriott books, this is where he had his surgery... Now a museum
- Goathland (?sp), where Heartbeat was filmed
- if you get over toward the east coast, I love Lincoln. One of my favourite small cities, and spectacular cathedral.
- Rievaulx Abbey, near Helmsley. Ruins of abbey destroyed by Cromwell's soldiers
Personally, I think York is over-rated... Crowded, smelly, expensive.

I believe you leave on your trip to Britain, Charlotte, and I'm sorry to be replying so late to your request for suggestions of places to stay and things to see.
If I remember correctly, you're going to be in Yorkshire & Northumberland, and in the Scottish Borders. I've gone through my trip diaries, and here are some ideas...
- Lake District - Hill Top. The home Beatrix Potter bought from the proceeds of Peter Rabbit.
- Dove Cottage, Wordsworth's home.
- Low Wood Hotel, near Ambleside. Right on the lakeshore, lovely gardens.
- Honister Pass and slate mine museum.
- Hadrian's Wall, especially Housesteads an
