After 6 years, many plateaus and yo-yo's, I've finally made it to my goal weight of a 150 and a BMI in the "normal" range! I've set a new goal of 5 more pounds by Christmas, but the real goal is just to stay between 145-150. I have to give credit to Sparkpeople for helping me in this struggle over the last 8 months. I feel that the combination of keeping a nutrition log, varying workouts, and eating meals balanced in protein, carbs and good fats has led to my success. I feel great, physically, mentally and emotionally. What fun it was to go shopping for fall/winter clothes and grab things from the size 9 rack instead of going to the Plus Size section!
UPDATE: Christmas 2008 goal met! Currently maintaining at 140-145 range.
UPDATE: August 1, 2009 - Still maintaining between 138-142. It is harder to find motivation once you reach goal weight, so I set a goal of running a 5K. I don't really like running at all, so this has been hard for me - but I have signed up for our local 5K on August 23rd. I don't care about time - just want to run the entire way. My daughter is running with me. It's a celebration of the two of us losing a combined weight of 200 pounds!!!!
UPDATE: August 23, 2009 - Goal met! I ran my 5K today! My daughter bailed on me because she didn't feel she was ready. I did it anyway. And I even brought home the first place medal for the Women 50 and Over category! Still maintaining around the 140 mark, where I want to be.
UPDATE: June 7, 2010 - It's been a long time since I've updated. Things haven't changed much. I am trying to do a bit more s/t, but basically I am maintaining in the 140-145 range. Finding new goals to stay motivated gets difficult. I have learned that I will need to be vigilant for the rest of my life, as the weight will come back quickly. I know that I need to continue exercising regularly and logging my food. I can enjoy "indulgences" occasionally and within reason without feeling guilty about it. I've also learned there are going to be those times when I let my eating get totally out of control but those times are getting fewer and farther apart with time. So for now, my challenging is tryingto keep maintenance interesting so the bad habits don't sneak back into my life!
UPDATE: Dec 27, 2010 - It's been over 2 years since I hit my goal weight, and I've managed to maintain in my range of 140-145, slipping over the top a few times. I continue to track my food and exercise - it keeps me accountable! The episodes of binging on sweets still happen, but less often. Coming up with new goals to keep me motivated is challenging. No way will I ever want to do a Marathon, or even a 10K, but I may do another 5K this year.
UPDATE: Sep 6, 2011 - Long overdue for an update! It's been a summer full of reunions, potlucks, and temptations, and it didn't take long for my weight to creep up over the top of my maintenance range. Of course, it's not coming back off as easily as it went on! I'm blaming it partially on the fact that menopause seems to have finally hit. As of today I've changed my goals and ticker back into a weight loss mode, and need to be vigilant for the next few months until those pounds are gone again!! I've continued to exercise and eat healthy the majority of the time, but if anyone tells you that it's impossible to gain 4-5 pounds in a weekend -- I am proof that you CAN! I'm confident that I've learned from SP how to get back into maintenance range - and I WILL!
UPDATE : Dec 28, 2011. I'm back in maintenance range and have re-set my weight ticker to the maintenance one. Goal is to stay within -5 or +5. My plan for 2012 is keep doing what I'm doing, but try to kick up the intensity of my cardio to get that heart rate up a bit more!
I've reached my weight goal. My new goal is to maintain not only my weight, but my healthy eating and exercise habits.
1-1-2009 - Fitness goal is to train for a 5K and hopefully run one with my daughter in August.
8-1-2009 - 5K is only 3 weeks away and I'm ready for it!
8-23-2009 - I ran my 5K today and placed first in the Women 50 and Over category!!
1-4-2011 - My nutrition goal for the year is to work hard at training myself to learn "moderation" with chocolate, sweets, etc. I don't want to avoid them, I want to learn to be able to enjoy them in moderation without them taking control! I have a point/reward system in place for this goal.
My short term fitness goal for the month of January is to do 100 crunches every day. I have several ideas for personal goals but haven't decided on one or a plan to accomplish it, so still working on that one!
I think the keys that SparkPeople gave me to reach my goal weight after 6 years of ups and downs were: logging food and exercise; eating the right balance of nutrients; a wider variety of food and exercise to "trick" my metabolism.
I live in a small town in Minnesota where I work as a legal assistant. I married my high school sweetheart in 1973 and we're still married!
I love reading, playing piano, spending time relaxing at the lake.

2. Chocolate raisins, cherries, and strawberries count as fruit.
3. Eat a chocolate bar before a meal. It'll take the edge off your appetite.
