as the mother of three boys, you would think i would shed pounds quickly chasing after them. alas ... not the case. i weigh as much NOW as i did nine months pregnant with my last child. the gal at the mcdonalds drive-thru sees me more often than my jazzercise instructor. not good.
time for a change. i've done it before and i can do it again. the trick will be STICKING WITH IT and MAINTAINING the life change. i'm ready to start. i have a drawer full of jeans that needs me to have a much smaller butt to wear them. i refuse to buy new moo clothes or more elastic waisted pants. this is the end of the self indulgence. time to get 'er done. ready, set ... GO!!
the above text was written in 2008. since then, i've begun making updates on my progress below. (starting with most current.) i don't typically blog, but i do keep a community journal for the day to day makings of my journey. without this journal and the help of my sparkfriends, i would not be where i am today. i am forever grateful. the link to my journal, "minimize the damage," is on the right side bar toward the bottom on my page.
6/1/13 UPDATE: i woke up this morning to several email notifications from sparkpeople. MOTIVATOR OF THE DAY! :) i feel terrible. i haven't updated (or really, fully utilized) sparkpeople in, well, it looks like 2 years. *gasp* BUT, here's the good news ... i have MAINTAINED my weight loss. i got on the scale this morning and my weight was 132.2. i'm a size 4. it'll be four years this summer, since i started my weight loss journey. i love this new me ... and this new body. health and fitness will forever be a priority to me. i jazzercise every day and i eat mindfully every day. (even when i eat crap, i wholly admit it to myself.) i will always say, there is nothing special about me. anyone can do this. trust your potential. it always seems impossible until it's done.
4/24/11 UPDATE: ran my 3rd 5k on april 15, 2011. my time was 30:03. considering the spine surgery was less than 5 months ago and i had a 2.5 month exercise restriction in there (and winter), i'm pretty pleased with that time. i'm on my way to 75 jazzercise classes since 2/4/11 and i'm participating in "jazz it off," a weight loss competition at the jazzercise studio. i haven't budged much in weight (146.6), but i'm having the time of my life being active again. =)
2/2/11 UPDATE: well now. here's ANOTHER shocker -- i was named a sparkpeople MOTIVATOR today. *lamely attempts a cabbage patch* totally STOKED!!! =D it's a badge of honor i'll wear proudly. very proudly. thank you sparkfriends! =)
and in equally exciting news, the neurosurgeon has given me permission to return to jazzercise a few weeks earlier than his original 3 month restriction. i start back TOMORROW! *another lame cabbage patch* the surgery was successful, but the recovery has been less the pleasant. that said, i'm tired of sitting around growing bone all day. i miss my old routine. i'll be glad to get back to the dancefloor and back to running and back to healthy life in general. my weight going back -- 147.8. the 8s of ~3 months ago are a bit snug. =\ not especially proud of that, but it can be changed. set a goal recently to run a 10k this year. may be a bit lofty with new screws in my neck, but i'll give it the old college try.....
11/16/10 UPDATE: well now. here's a shocker -- i'm having surgery in two days. seems i ruptured a disk in my neck. there was no particular trauma, but based on symptom progression, i'm guessing it happened at some point in august of this year. my spinal cord is compromised, so i have to have a diskectomy and spinal fusion. there will be screws in my neck. *shudder* i'm doctor ordered to refrain from exercise for 3 months after surgery. i'll do it, of course, but i won't like it. weight, 143; size, 8. let's see what it is in 3 months......
10/3/10 UPDATE: ran my SECOND 5K today. crossed the finish line in 27:16. WHAT?! =O i know!! it was the race for the cure ... there were over 20,000 participants. yikes! pretty sure the energy of the event propelled me to a wonderful time. that being said, i'll claim it and be proud of it! =) i ran in size SMALL pants. i'll claim and be proud of that too.....
9/4/10 UPDATE: ran my first 5K today!! ran it with another sparkfriend, MELMALONE. we crossed the finish line at 36:24. we ran more than we anticipated with only a couple short walks. super proud of us! already registered for my SECOND 5K in october. =) woohoo! 145.8 pounds; bmi: 22.1. LOVING my new DROID phone! =D
7/23/10 UPDATE: GOOOOAAAALLLL!!! fifty-ONE pounds lost as of today! 147.8 pounds. the DROID is MINE! all mine......
7/16/10 UPDATE: whoa. it's been forever since i updated. glad i've made *some* progress. the stats: wt: 150.2 (48.8 lost), bmi ... 22.8. waist down 9.5 inches; hips, 7.5in; thighs, 6.5in; arms and neck still the same, 2.5 and 1.5in respectively. i'm solidly in a size 8, down from a size 18. it's been about a year since i really got serious. what a difference a year can make.... i actually bought some pants that had SKINNY written right on the label! me?? in skinny jeans?? =O woo hoo!!!
i'm 1.2 pounds from my DROID cell phone 50lb loss goal! sooooo close...... the phone will be mine!!
4/2/10 UPDATE - it's been awhile since i updated, so thought i'd share where i'm at in the process. i'm sitting at 158lbs as of today. 41 pounds lost. bmi ... 24. down 8.5 inches from waist; hip down 7 inches; thighs; 5.5 inches; arms, 2.5 inches. i'm down 5 pant sizes. today i'm 4 months smoke free. i feel FANTASTIC. this month, i'm trying zumba.
i signed up for a team challenge to keep me motivated. the goal - lose 1.2 pounds per week. that's doable. the end of the challenge happens to coincide with my 20 year high school reunion. bonus.... tracking below:

1/7/10 - UPDATE - down 32.6 pounds! 7 inches off the waist; 5 inches off the hips; 3.5 inches off the thighs. (that's EACH thigh, people!) i'm still going strong and feeling great! as of today, i'm 36 days smoke free. i've cut my diet coke consumption and upped my water. i've picked up running for additional cardio. (even when no one is chasing me!) and, i plan to run my first 5k in april 2010. my husband has consented to allow me to get a droid cell phone if i lose 50 pounds. he may not know what he got himself into. *wink* that phone WILL be mine. first though, i have to hit 160 pounds; 20% loss from my initial re-starting weight. at that mark a sparkfriend is sending me a "skinny bitch" prize. oh, but the prizes do motivate me! *grin* stay tuned.....
10/29/09 - UPDATE - i'm down 23 pounds! lost 5 inches off my waist; 3.5 inches off my hips. yesterday i pulled jeans out of my drawer i haven't worn in 3 years AND THEY FIT!!!! down two pant sizes!! i'm thrilled! still have work to do but i'm super proud of myself for not giving up. i'm still no model of good health, but i'm making progress. so long as i continue down that path, i'm happy. i have no excuses for blowing it this time. no more kids for me. if i blow it, it's all my fault. *gulp* not something i want to take responsibility for. so, i'll continue to take it slow; continue to make progress. that's the plan.....
6/29/09 - UPDATE - for the love of pete. *sigh* you'd think i liked being fat as long as i've STAYED fat. dang it. we start a weight loss challenge at work this week. i'm getting back in the spark groove. my motivation is pretty high at the moment even if my energy isn't. i've grown weary of my own laziness. i'm starting at a weight i haven't even seen 9 months pregnant. it ain't pretty folks. i'm kicking myself in the big, fat butt. c'mon me!!
10/20/08 - UPDATE - after getting down to 170, i jumped back up to very nearly 190. really, i shouldn't use the word "jump" since that implies a certain amount of physical activity. pfft. so disappointed in myself. *sigh* BUT, i know spark works and i know how to work it. back in the saddle.....
3/17/08 - UPDATE - i now officially weigh LESS than my pre-pregnancy weight!! five pounds less, to be exact. 178lbs! that's 20 pounds lost since starting SP. i can't believe it! and, let's face it, i'm damn proud of myself. =) i'm not done tho'. now i have the weight on my driver's license to shoot for. shouldn't have lied *quite* so much at the dmv, eh? lol.
goal 1 ... eliminate late night snacking(!!) no eating at the computer?
goal 2 ... jazzercise 5-6xs/week.
goal 3 ... drink at least 8 cups of water a day. carry bottle with me for convenience.
goal 4 ... plan ahead. buy and USE healthy foods from the store.
goal 5 ... try NEW foods and/or experiment with a new recipe 1x/wk.
goal 6 ... attempt to beat pr in 5k race.
goal 7 ... run a 10k in 2011 *gulp*
goal 8 ... ONE normal push up. just ONE. is that too much to ask?! =\
*plan meals. go to the store on a regular basis. keep healthy foods handy.
*dress for jazzercise first thing in the morning. plan to go and GO.
*bypass the drive thru!!
*run when time/childcare allows ... start and finish a 10k running prep program.
*work on weight loss in 10 pound increments ... small bites are easier to chew.
*celebrate victories and work through struggles -- STAY SPARKY! NEVER QUIT!
my name is staci and i'm a 39yo sahm to three active boys, aedan, rowan and kieran. quite frankly, i can't keep up with them. i'm hoping to become more physically active so we can all burn off that excess energy together. right now, it takes 2.3 seconds for my energy to burn off ... the boys can go MUCH longer and i'd really like to play more ... and maybe even SWIM this summer. i'm 5' 7" and i live in omaha, ne.
they do notice ....
my middle son, rowan, came running up to me after a recent jazzercise class and proclaimed loudly, "GOOD JOB EXERCISING, MOM!!"
what a boost. lol.
