There's More to Life than Fat-Free Cheese

I'm interested in losing weight, certainly, but I'm trying to change my focus from diet diet diet and scale scale scale to healthy healthy healthy! I want to eat healthy, organic, local whole foods IN MODERATION! I want to have my wine every day, just not a whole bottle! I want to eat REAL FOODS, not fake plastic fat-free yecht. And for that I need to learn a bit of restraint.

I have always been pretty down on myself for being overweight but I am embarking on this journey to change that.

My Goals:
To improve my life by continuing to improve my eating habits and fitness level to get to a more healthy weight. I plan to do this by sticking to such health habits as eating whole, organic, local foods in moderation, and finding an exercise plan that works for me -- and slipping in the occasional glass of wine!

My Program:
I joined SparkPeople because I was looking for a place to get inspiration and tools for reaching my goals.
These are some of the things I'm doing:
-Trying a new food once a week
-Parking on the 5th floor of the parking garage and taking the stairs
-Taking a 20 minute walk (at least) every day
-Trying new recipes every week
-Changing habits such as eating in front of the TV
-Get all my water in before I'm allowed any wine!
-Using and contributing to SparkPeople message boards, blogs, pages, etc.

Personal Information:
Hi, I'm Joanie, a 45 year old newly-married (whoohoo!!!) woman living in Long Beach, California, where I've lived for 27 years. I work as a computer Visual Effects artist but hope to change my career (I'd love to just stay home, garden and raise some backyard chickens, but the mortgage isn't gonna pay itself!!!) I live in a 1918 Craftsman bungalow with my husband (I love that word!) and a small blonde cat named Puss-Puss.

Other Information:
I'm concerned with living a clean and thoughtful life -- recycling, reducing my carbon footprint, eating locally and organically. I think these things are far more important than fat-free cheese, which is a hideous substance.

Thanks for your comment on my activity feed.... crazy scales! And yes, we both might need new batteries!

As for 212, that's where I started. You can do it! There's an article about how losing 10% of your body weight can increase your health exponentially. I really want to help you figure out how to do that. If there's anything I can do to help you get into 'one-derland', please let me know! In the meantime, have a great weekend and let's get in some great exercise!

You sure did find lots to do with your tomatoes. For the past week I have been trying low carb. I had been stuck at the same weight for 6 weeks. So this past week I decided to go low carb. No potatos, pasta or rice etc... Well it worked I lost 3 lbs. It was nice to see the scale moving. The mock mac and cheese recipe can be foufd here on sparkrecipes. Just type in George Stella. He is a low carb chef. Use to be on food network. I also baked two small chicken breasts, cut in bite size pieces and mixed it in with it. It looks and smells good but I havent really tasted it other than a dip of my spoon to taste the sauce. I have it wrapped in foil in the fridge for a dinner later this week. When I finally do bake it I will put on the cheese covering per the recipe but also a little bit of crumbled bacon. It is not low fat but low carbs so I'm hoping its good. Have a great week and thanks for the idea about the lettuce. I will look for seeds tomorrow. We need to celebrate life here not sickness. Life is to short. emoticon

Joanie, so nice to hear from you hun. Life never goes as planned exactly does it. I very often feel like I am on a seesaw between the good and the bad holding on for dear life. Guess what our tiny only tomato plant gave us two tomatoes. We enjoyed them with some basil, olive oil and mozzzarela cheese. Yummo. Bob has been sick again, was in intensive care a few weeks ago for a week, and he still is not right. They are trying to figure out what is wrong. He has a very low white blood count. They won't even let him rake etc....So our walking program together has been put to the wayside till we figure this out. He sees a blood specialist the first week of October. So we are kind of laying low. He wants to try and plant some herb seeds now and try to grow them inside for winter use. Not sure if it would work but at least it will keep him occupied while we wait for some answers.
