My Mom was born in Ireland and they lived in a cottage, but not as modern looking as those. Large families must have been common as there were 12 children in both my mother's family and my Dad's. My father's family was from Lithuania, but he was born here. Mother came here at age 11. I guess what struck me about these houses was the setting, close to each other but country side in the background.
