Third time's the charm?? I hope so! My youngest is a junior now (gasp!) and in a few years I plan to teach overseas and have some fun. It would be so much easier and healthier if I got rid of this extra weight for good!

I've struggled with weight problems since I started kindergarten. I was actually underweight as a child because I was so active. My grandmother decided that I needed more food when I started school and since I loved to eat, I was all for it! Combined with less activity, however, I started gaining weight. My father was less than thrilled with this and he couldn't find a nice way to say it. Up until college (when I moved out) I heard many negative comments about my body. The really sad part is that when I graduated from high school I was a size 10-12. That's not even close to fat! Sure, I was curvy, but he only saw the fat. Now I know how sad that is, especially since it became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I don't know exactly when I gave up on my body but I do know when I had enough. My sister and I were visiting my brother to help with their newborn (last of four) and she convinced me to join Weight Watchers. A friend of hers at work was successful and Monica wanted me to feel good about myself, too. She even said she'd buy me a new outfit when I lost 20 pounds. I called her after every weigh-in and we celebrated my success together. I was at 15 pounds lost when she died in her sleep on my birthday. She was only 22 years old. She was six weeks away from graduating from LSU and she had just gotten engaged. I was going to be the matron of honor.

I tried going back to WW after the funeral but I just couldn't keep at it. After every weigh-in, I just sat in the car and cried. I quit and tried again, but I still couldn't do it.

Hurricane Katrina took my home, my father's, my grandmother's and so many more. We moved to central Louisiana and started over. There was no way I could live in a FEMA trailer with two special-needs children and a dog!

I was lucky enough to get a teaching job and it was a dream job for two years. I was finally teaching music in one elementary school. (before the hurricane, I taught at a high school every morning and four different elementary schools in the afternoon. I hated it) Unfortunately, music is not mandatory in elementary school in Rapides parish and my job was not renewed for the third year. I eventually found a home teaching 5th grade ELA and loved that, too. I've been teaching high school choir the last three years trying to rebuild a program that used to be really strong. This school year I'm teaching in a new program for talented kids, giving private lessons and it ROCKS! No more fighting with a principal who doesn't care for the arts. Woohoo!

I found my soul mate in November 2009 and we married in April 2010. It doesn't make sense to wait when you know it's right!

This is for me and my best friend, my sister and now my angel, Monica. I miss you so's so hard to believe we lost you almost twelve years ago this April.
