A few people in this world stumble on an eating plan that makes it easy, but they are the EXCEPTIONS, and we can't wait to be exceptions any more.
It's also NOT typical to have the problem drop away because of some kind of emotional work, truth be told. We still have to make conscious choices many times because emotions are not the only reason we eat randomly. But it is doable to learn to separate the eating stuff from the other stuff! Especially for ongoing non-food problems that can't be solved in tough moments. We might not be able to do something that will make us feel good fast, but we get better at accepting that it's worth it to forgo the easy, short-term fix. And we can keep getting better at life in between those meals.
