September 2012- At Goal Weight! First time I didn't run from the camera in years!
Before 2010 /After - April 2012
You may have noticed my name. That was, and still is my mantra since 2005 when I first joined Spark. It took me until 2012 to finally get rid of the excess weight, but I never gave up, I did it, and I will maintain it.
It wasn't a straightforward path. More like a series of peaks and valleys before I'd finally learned enough and was motivated enough to finally get rid of the weight once and for all. Prior to last year, I was either watching my food or exercising, but never seemed to be able to put the two together. Sometimes I would log into Spark, but there were great stretches where I ignored it. I was, for the most part maintaining, but sometimes I didn't do anything and would gain weight.
I started zumba in late 2010, I really liked it, and attended two days a week. I did not really lose any weight, although I did get in better shape. Despite the exercise though, I was still overweight because I was eating too much, and my blood pressure numbers were starting to make me nervous.
In early 2011, I decided that a good part of the reason I couldn't control my eating was an addiction to sweets and fast food french fries, so I gave them both up for Lent. Giving up sugar was something I'd never done before and it sure wasn't easy. It made me very anxious and nervous to give up my daily "fix". French fries were tough too. I still ate fast food, but learned to limit myself to a grilled chicken breast sandwich or a chicken salad. I learned that fries don't have to go with every fast food meal. Imposing that type of self-discipline was very good for me. I learned what triggered me to eat the sweets and also learned ways to control my cravings. I learned to substitute good food (and especially protein) for all that junk I'd been eating. Again, I didn't lose any weight, but that was OK. I was learning.
Then it was June, and vacation was just around the corner. That meant beach and bathing suits. My normally skinny hubby was feeling a little chubby and he decided that we should have a weight loss competition to see who could lose the most weight before vacation. Normally, I would have declined. He is much taller than me and one of those naturally skinny people that weight just falls off of. (Don't you hate them!) However, just coming off Lent and feeling in control of my addiction to sweets and fries, I agreed to the competition. I remembered the old story of the tortoise and the hare. I knew he would drop weight fast, but wouldn't be there for the long haul. My plan to win was simple, I would faithfully log my calories into SparkPeople every day, and I would increase my Zumba from two days a week to 4. Slow but steady would win the race!
After 12 weeks, the results were in, he had lost 20 lbs, and just as I had expected, he was up and down the whole time. I, on the other hand had slowly and steadily lost 26 lbs. I beat the pants off him! (actually both of us did have to get new pants!).
So, we headed for vacation and I decided that this time I would not lose the great progress I had made and would continue my weight loss when I returned. I logged into SparkPeople from my smart phone and even got in some zumba while I was away. As a result, and for the first time in my life, I did NOT gain any weight on vacation!
I continued to Zumba and Spark and just take it one day at a time, and by April of this year, I had achieved my goal weight and got rid of 60 pounds!!
Now I am learning maintenance, and it is going pretty well. My goal is to stay within a 3 pound (plus or minus) of my goal weight. When I overeat and gain, I just go back to my weight loss calorie levels and try to exercise a bit more. So far it's working. I achieved 6 months on maintenance and am working towards my one year anniversary. Research shows that the longer you can keep off the weight, the better your chances of keeping it off for good. I plan to be one of the success stories.

Update 11/7/12 - Too keep this weight off for good!
Update 1/5/12 - Lost the 50! Goal is to lose 9 more, add some strength training (firming) to my routine, and learn how to maintain.
Update 4/6/12 - I did it! Got to goal and 60 lbs gone! Now I'm working to build a little muscle, lose a little fat, and maintain this wonderful healthy body the Lord has blessed me with.
Keeping track of my calories in Spark, but also checking in with Spark regularly to read other's motivational blogs that keep me going!
Zumba 4 days a week. Boot camp toning 2 days a week.

I've become a Zumba addict. Best way to exercise ever invented!
I love movies and books. All kinds, as long as there interesting and well done. Besides zumba I like playing basketball and tennis.
