Kicked Cancer's Ass... Now Focussing on the Rest of Me!

Hi! I'm Michelle and I've known about this site since 2008 but only started using it to achieve my goals as of September 19th, 2011. I'm 40 (but am permanently stuck at about 24) and a professional photographer which has me unfortunately sitting behind a computer for 60+ hours a week. 6 years ago, when I began my business I was at what I felt was my optimal weight (though my BMI would have still shown me as overweight) and now have almost 70 pounds to lose from a combination of sitting so much ...
Hi! I'm Michelle and I've known about this site since 2008 but only started using it to achieve my goals as of September 19th, 2011. I'm 40 (but am permanently stuck at about 24) and a professional photographer which has me unfortunately sitting behind a computer for 60+ hours a week. 6 years ago, when I began my business I was at what I felt was my optimal weight (though my BMI would have still shown me as overweight) and now have almost 70 pounds to lose from a combination of sitting so much and of the stress of running a one-person business (amongst a sloo of other things) plus an extra 10-20 pounds to get me to the upper end of what the BMI suggests. I am well educated in nutrition, have a part time job as a yoga instructor and in my (very sparse) spare time I am a foodie and have a not-so-secret desire to get my chef's papers. My problem is simply motivation to continue with a healthy eating/fitness plan!

On January 20th, 2012 I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer. My full thyroidectomy surgery was on March 8th 2012 and I completed my RAI in August. On August 20th, 2012, I was given the good news of being cancer free! Just one more scan in July 2013 to confirm but I am happy to be finally over this hurdle. My weight-loss efforts got put on the back burner for a while while I dealt with all of this plus the backlog of work that it caused resulted in gaining practically all of the weight back but I will get through this and achieve my goals. Slowly... but surely.

I look forward to meeting you all! Feel free to message me so we can keep each other motivated!

My Goals:
My goal was to hit my goal weight before my 40th birthday in late April but due to some factors out of my control (damn you Thyroid Cancer) and a couple months of backsliding I will get there. Slow and easy wins the race

My Program:
I'm using the spark people food tracker and trying very hard to follow their guidelines. I recently bought a FitBit which I absolutely adore that really gets me moving and my rebounder gives me an intense cardio workout without having to pack up each day to go to the gym. I'm trying to take a little bit of time for myself each week without guilt (running your own business seems to go hand in hand with a LOT of pressure and guilt)

Personal Information:
I am an Ontario & Destination Wedding and portrait photographer with my own photography business: Captured Soul Photography. I am also an avid traveller, coffee addict, and a multimedia & social-media maven. I love all things food related, teach yoga in my "spare" time, am a slave to iTunes apps and believe that there is no such thing as coincidence.

I hope that one day Apple, Mini-Cooper, Nikon, Adobe, Google, and Starbucks will one day amalgamate forces and take over the world.

I have a BFA from York University with a concentration in Creative Writing and a "multidisciplinary minor" in photography, theatre, english literature, and multimedia. I have studied yoga and Thai Yoga massage, worked as a singing clown, and have ambition to pursue the culinary arts, achieve my pilot's license, become a published author and embrace any musical talents I have before the next decade passes.

When I dream, I dream big.

Other Information:
I am currently squirreling away money for my one-day sailboat.... though not very successfully. Should you wish to help my cause, donations and/or new opportunities will be happily accepted. *wink*

I'm a little late replying to the comment you left on my page nearly a year ago! I did see it though! Thank you for the kind words. I've been super busy. I moved to Taiwan last Oct. to teach until this August and have been the busiest in my whole life. On the bright side, I've dropped many pounds and am almost the goal I set way back when!
Hope you are well! emoticon

Oh noooo I wasn't suggesting that you should cut down slowly too! I know everyone's different and I was just sharing how I'm going about it. (Please don't delete my comment : p)
Yeah when I told my Mum I was going gluten free she got me gluten free pasta and cakes and all sorts. 1. they were awful 2. the calories were phenomenal! and 3. they actually made me feel worse than the plain gluten-containing varieties.
I'm just sticking with 'real' foods from now on.
