I live in Arlington TX which is part of the very large Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. I've been to the shelter here in Arlington last week and looked at the cats and also asked questions. They didn't have paperwork to really fill out ahead of time they said and I just need an ID. I asked about background check, because I helped someone adopt a pet in Las Cruces NM about 4 years ago and they did a short background check, looking especially for any instances of violence against animals or such that would prohibit someone there from adopting, or other things that would indicate it wouldn't be a good home for a pet by the background check. But they said they don't do that here, although I think it would not be a back idea to weed out a few potential problems. They use Petango website, and encouraged me to also look there and if possible get id numbers for pets I might be interested in because some people get there well before it opens at 10 and wait and know which pets they are interested in. I heard on the news last night that black cats are often overlooked in adoption because of superstitions. I don't have any of those so would be willing to adopt any color, including black, At the top of my list is that it will be affectionate to me and a good companion and support animal to help me deal with different things. I plan to go back to this shelter Thursday or Friday to see what they have now in preparation for Saturday's event, when I think the likelihood of being adopted so close to free adoptions is slimmer. If I don't see one there towards the end of the week, or if I just want to check them out, I might try one or two other shelters. This is the 4th year that NBC and North Texas has helped sponsor this event and there are 69 shelters just in in north Texas taking part in this, as well as some other ones across the country. In the metroplex there are about 7 million people ha ha. I hope to get a pretty good idea of what I want before Saturday and get to the shelter I pick very early and wait until they open at 10, which most shelters are doing. That's why I'm trying to decide where I want to go ahead of time because I don't want to go to different places and wait in line forever and then have a poor pick because by the time I do that its late. I also asked and here in Arlington it includes the spayingor neutering, shots, adoptions fees, tags and license, etc they told me. I'm not sure if everything covered is the same everywhere so I would ask before going if I decide on a different place. I did hear of another place on the news last night that's more than an hour away but I don't know if I want to go that far in the traffic around here, even though it's lighter on a Saturday morning They are a rural area with lots of animals and everyone near them already has 2 or 3 animals so they have a hard time adopting out there animals. They also don't have a very big budget but an anonymous donor gave them the money to participate in this and be able to give away some of the free stuff. I hate to be picky about the free things but since I am on disability since a stroke my money is short and I have to make sure I save money for vet bills if they come up. But I'm excited and can't wait to get my new family member. My children and grandchildren are also not anywhere near here and I'm a little of a loner so it really means a lot to me. Thanks for all your helpful suggestions too!
