July 10. 2014: I have maintained my weight loss since 2008. It hasn't been a diet, but a healthy lifestyle change. During the past seven years with SparkPeople, I've made and met many goals, with the biggest goal trail running again!!
This is my journey......
I've been a member for many years. I joined June 6, 2007, and love everything about this site. Before I found this site (or maybe it found me), I weighed 131 and was worried that I wouldn't be able to maintain the weight loss, I had lost over 25 pounds. After I started with sparkpeople, I lost a few more, down to 129 and I had learned how to maintain, which I'm very happy with, but wouldn't mind "letting go" of a few more (a term I heard on one of my teams). I've always had a hard time maintaining my weight until now.
In 2008, I started weight training 3x's a week, the weight started coming off slowly, so I set a goal to be 125 by my 40th birthday, July 30.
5/12/08: I have officially lost 1 pound. 3 more to go by July.
6/6/08: Let another pound go! Down to two!
6/30/08: Another one gone. One more to go!
7/3/08: Met my goal today 125! Holiday weekend got me. 126 by the end of the weekend.
7/10/08: Ok, I 'm officially 125! 2 1/2 week early.
7/25/08: I think it finally hit me today, I'm 125 and I know I'll always be 125. It's kinda funny, when I joined SP I didn't have any goals except to maintain my weight where I was. During my past year, I've learned so much about healthy eating and the importance of strength training. And I took both seriously. Healthy eating first and once that was conquered, I got serious about strength training. That's when I started losing fat and gaining muscle. I see such a difference in my body now compared to a year ago. I can finally say I really love the way I look. Now on to my next goal.
8/27/08: I did something I thought I'd never be able to do again. I ran a hiking trail. Not far, maybe 1/2 mile, but I'm on my way! I haven't been able to run at all since Jan 2001. I was diagnosed with a skull base meningioma. A non-cancerous brain tumor the size of a golf ball growing on the small part of the brain that controls all body functions. I went through 16 hours of surgery and lost most of my upper body strength, so whenever I would try to run, it would really hurt my neck & head where I'd had the surgery and I'd have a strained head-ache for the rest of the day. I never realized how much I missed trail running until I started doing it again. Such a wonderful feeling.
9/22/08: It's been over two months since I met my goal weight and I'm very happy to say I'm still here at 125 and I've lost another 1/2 inch in my hips. Which is showing me I'm gaining muscle and letting the fat go.
I've also been doing my little bit of running on the hiking trail a couple times a week with no pain.
11/10/2008: 4 months at goal & maintaining!! Still trail running and have been adding a little more distance, not a lot yet, but working on it.
12/10/08: 5 months and maintaining weight. Starting to lift heavier weights 3 times a week and can feel a difference. Oh yeah, I went down a pant size!! Didn't expect that at all. I knew my pants were getting a little baggy and I needed to take them in some, but not a whole size. It still feels good with all the little things I see happening to myself.
12/25/08: I have to share! My DH bought me a new mountain bike for Christmas!! It's my very first bike. Being the younger sister, I got her hand me downs, not that it was a bad thing, lol.
1/10/09: Six months!! (happy dance) Maintenance is much easier than what I had expected it to be. It's definitely been a lifestyle change, not a quick fix diet. I stay mindful of what I eat, how much I eat & how much I exercise. I love the tracking tools, so I track everything!!
1/30/09: I made the hill!!
3/3/09: I made it to the top of the hill and over!! I dedicated this Carol (MYSTIQUEMYSTIC), I could feel her hand on my back helping me along!
4/17/09: I ran the trail today! The same trail I hadn't been able to run since my surgery. What a feeling! I really had my doubts (fear) as to whether or not I would have the stamina to even come close to running half of it, but it was actually easy! Easier than what I remember, LOL, I think running the "hill" trail boosted my stamina and lowered my self-doubts. Now I need to run this trail a few more times and make sure I just wasn't having a "good" day.
My legs sure were tired the next day!!
4/18/09: We've been walking now for 15 years!! When we started, it was because Mike was diagnosed with high blood pressure & we wanted to control it with diet & exercise, so it became a "healthy" habit. Now it's so much more than a habit. It's something I look forward to each day & what a great stress reliever!
I tallied up an average of the miles I've walked since, and I came up with 11,700 miles! (average 15 miles a week: 15 years x 52 weeks a year = 780 weeks: 780 weeks x 15 miles = 11,700 miles) That's almost halfway around the world. (circumference at the equator = 24902 miles). And that's not counting any of the hiking I've done.

5/6/09: Six months of working on it, but I did a head stand without flailing my legs! On my first attempt using my right foot to hop up and hold, came down smoothly then on the my first attempt with my left foot, hop, hold & came down smoothly. Now to start moving away from the wall.
7/10/09: 1 year of successfully maintaining my weight!
10/7/09: WooHoo! I am now doing a headstand without touching the wall. I got so excited I could only hold for about 5 seconds, then I had to run outside to tell DH. I'm still close to the wall in case I need the support, but I did it!
Still working on a forearm balance, but I'll get there.
11/26/09: I found out this morning I won the SparkRecipes "Unchained Recipe Contest" for casual dining! What an honor to know that SP members liked my recipe. Thank you everybody for your support.
12/23/09: I did a headstand 4' away from the wall! I guess I just needed to let go of the fear of falling.
8/4/2010: Today, I had DH help me get into a forearm balance. I was able to hold, not for long, and I had plenty of strength. It was a great feeling. I finally did it! (with help, but I did it)
8/27/10: I finally reached a goal I was beginning to think was unattainable. I did a forearm balance on my own! I got so excited I couldn't hold the pose for more than a couple of seconds, but wow, I did it! I'm so glad I didn't give up.
I set up to be notified by e-mail from SparkPeople to remind me of special events and goals I've reached each year. Two years ago to the day, I started running again. If you missed that story, scroll back up to 8/27/2008.
7/20/12: I'm still working on a forearm balance. I can do one on my own and hold for 15 sec using yoga blocks. I know I have the strength, I just need to work past the fear of falling.
6/7/14:Much has happened since the last time I wrote, I've been on many beautiful hikes in the Southwest Desert and finally became able to do a forearm balance without blocks. Now I've come to a small hurdle, I have two herniated disks & spinal stenosis (a narrowing of the spinal canal) in my neck. Damage that happened back when I was in my 20's (whiplash). Unsure of what the future will bring but I will give it my all and continue to be as active as possible.

Still working on Forearm balance, I can now hold for 15 sec.

8/4/10: Did one with help, I'm on my way.
8/27/10: I did it!! No help this time but got so excited, I couldn't hold the pose.
Do a head stand without needing a wall to support me at all. Use complete balance. GOAL MET 10/7/09!
Add more distance to the "hill" trail run and eventually be able to run to the top. GOAL MET 1/30/09!
February 28, 2009:
Add in 1/2 mile (uphill) trail run. I'm so close now(1/27). I did it! 1/30/09 I ran to the top of the hill!
Increase my trail running distance. I would love to get back to where I was before my surgery by the end of the year.
4/17/09: I did it! I ran the trail I use to run before my surgery!
Memorial weekend: Wear my new blue bikini
I walk/trail hike 3 miles 5 days a week with 1/2 mile trail run, strength train 3 days a week for 30 minutes and practice Yoga 3 days a week for 30-45 minutes.
For Christmas 2008, DH bought me a mountain bike and I've been riding that.
I love riding it in the desert, but can't wait to take it on vacations!
I bought Oreo a trailer that attaches to my bike and she loves it!! Now I can take her with me.
My DH, Mike and I have been married for 29 years and he's still the love of my life.
