CHANGES IN ME

Goals for 2013:

Focus more on God.

Lose at least 2 lbs a month for the year, bringing me to 135, my ideal weight.

Complete a century and a metric century and a few other bicycle rides I want to accomplish this year to help train for Cycle Oregon in 2014.

To simplify my life so I am not so stressed and busy.

To have our boat brought here so we can enjoy her again on the coast and have it near us to use.

5/15/2011- It seems to be working... Keep it low-key, simple yet consistent.

I've lost 12 lbs since March. I finally made simple changes with a little time and effort at the grocery store. My kidney disease is a huge motivator finally for me and I am happy to finally work at prolonging their health.

~Some changes I've made to see ounces disappear every day~

1. Started logging on Spark again. I blog often to focus on what I am thinking and the changes I've made.

2. Changed the way I eat, concentrating on low sodium and staying in my calorie range. Found food that was healthy (no processed food).

3. I moderate, I don't suffer.

4. I find treats that will satisfy but not blow it. I found an awesome frozen yogurt that is just like chocolate ice cream. So I treat myself with that and cool whip LITE mixed with it for an awesome treat at the end of the day.

Also, i find what treats i can't control eating and keep them out of my house. But i load upon treats i CAN control.

5. I am eating less carbs and more vegetables. I found an awesome mix for a salad that makes me want to eat it every night. I found a great yogurt honey mustard dressing and discovered craisins are awesome on salads. so i try to eat a salad with either baked chicken or fish and sometimes ciabatta bread or a yukon gold potato.

6. I had to tell myself NO with the bad food - it was hard at first but you get used to not wanting the bad stuff. Just fill up on the good stuff. Stuff your face but stuff it with healthy food.

My biggest change was cutting the Swiss Miss chocolate from my coffee in the mornings. It cut out processed chemicals and 70 calories per cup out of my diet. It's saved a lot on my grocery money too and worrying when i run out. I don't have to worry anymore.

7. I walk every day at break and lunches at work and try to do strength training 1-3x a week. I am keeping it very low-key yet consistent.

8. I keep my goals realistic. I started out with mini goals, working toward one big goal. It's helped to just look at small goals instead of the daunting task ahead of the larger goal.

The ounces trickle off this way. I never thought i would be the person to change my eating habits. If I can do this, ANYONE can- it just takes a lot of time at the grocery store to retrain how you shop. It takes a few days of control - but again, just supplement your bad treat cravings with good treats- and slowly work on decreasing that craving.

9. Just give yourself a break- don't make too many obligations and set yourself up for failure. Just take baby steps and watch yourself slowly move forward. It's not a race. It's your livelihood. Make a decision to do it and make small changes here and there to make those goals you set.

This is especially important for me to remember so I can stay focused on lengthening the time i have before my kidneys fail. This has become a big motivator for me. More than the weight loss.

Lost two lbs this week. First drop in months. I am so happy. I've worked pretty hard at it, not perfect, but better.

~ BUY NOTHING WITH HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP IN IT.

Changin' it up.

Well- Thought about it. Why do I try to do the same thing? Every time? Fail every time? Unhappy every time?

nope. nope. nope.

My challenge to start.... with no end date...

1. BE HAPPY WITH ME
2. FOCUS ON WHAT MATTERS
3. THANK GOD FOR EVERYTHING IN MY LIFE.








I AM DETERMINED TO MAKE 2010 A GROWTH YEAR!

My word of the year. FOCUS. This is a good time to start and get motivated..

Some of those goals...

THE WELL BEING THINGS:
Improve my mental well being
~Retrain my automatic thoughts using thinking error awareness
(this will help how to be
more positive)
~Learn how to deal with stress and anxiety, not cry as much
about things
~Manage my tasks more efficiently for a wider area of focus on
my life
~Don't be lazy- if something needs to be done, don't wait around
to do it or don't wait for
Brett to do it. I need to be more proactive in day to day to tasks
to be healthy and happy.

Improve my physical well being
~Eat better, cleaner foods and less sugar and protein to help my
kidney function
~Exercise more- walks and hikes and kayaking and hopefully
sailing
Of course I'd love to lose at least 30lbs.
Take care of my body, don't neglect it for money's sake. (ie.
Go get my papsmear and
physical and dental cleaning)

~Pay off some of this debt

~Focus more on family. Remembering everyone's birthdays

~Pray and read my bible more

STUFF I'D LIKE TO GET DONE THIS YEAR:
~Get our sailboat back to Oregon to fix up and enjoy!!!
~Get my jewelry business moving forward again
~Finish scrapbooks
~Learn to:
Play my guitar
Spin/Knit
Take better pictures
Paint with Acrylic
~Get a kayak and paddle this summer
~Lots more camping this summer
~At least one backpacking trip (last trip was April 2006)
~Mountain biking
~Become a better cook
~Make more things with the clay, including clay orchids

As the new year approaches, I am not embarrassed to ready new goals for the new year. I want to make some real changes in my life. I want to have a healthier mentality about myself and my environment. I want to feel better again. I want to take care of my body. I want to take care of my mind. I want to focus more on beauty than tribulation this next year. To enjoy the things I HAVE in my life. I know its so cliche to prepare New Year goals but I am a person that needs motivation and my goals for my well being have coincided with the new year. I want to make 2010 a year of change and metamorphis for my body and soul.

I am going to start learning how to take control of my thoughts so I can control my feelings and stress. I am using a workbook called Thoughts and Feelings. I will be posting my progress and thoughts in my blog.



05/01/2009 UPDATE
I am back in my hometown while my husband brings our boat back to Oregon. I am refocusing to pay down bills and become happier and healthier. I gained all the weight back I'd lost but am excited to try again to get healthier.


11/14/2008 UPDATE
I have not been on Spark for many months due to cruising our boat down the ICW in Texas/Lousiana. We have very little access to the internet. We are currently back in Oregon, trying to save money to continue our voyage offshore this next Spring toward Mexico. We will eventually head down to Panama and head through the canal.

I have gained all the weight back this last year that I'd lost since Feb 2007.

I have been very discouraged about this, having tasted the healthy weight I was earlier. (See my picture?) I have gained about 20 lbs since then. Being in Oregon, we don't have opportunies to work out. I sit at a desk every day and eat whatever I want.

I now have internet on my computer and am hoping to restart my Spark on Spark and lose at least some of this fat I've gained these next two months.

In September 2006, my husband and I sold everything we had and said good bye to our families in Oregon to pursue our dream of cruising on a sailboat. We traveled East to find a hurricane-damaged boat, something affordable for us that we could fix up. We found our boat in Texas and have been working on rebuilding it this last year. When we left Oregon, I weighed over 175. I backpacked, hiked, and walked for years but never could lose the weight. It worried me that my weight would inhibit the sailing aspects of living aboard a sailboat.

The boat ended up being a really well designed boat with great sailing capabilities. We have been blessed by the boat and the progress we've been able to make on such a limited income. We have had to rebuild her from the hull as she was stripped completely of bulkheads and hardware, even her mast when we found her (See pictures in my gallery).

She is now 90% complete and looking fantastic. I have tried to keep my health and well-being changed to match our boat's health, but her progress is soaring in front of me. It's exciting to see her transformation though. We moved aboard her February 2008 and set sail in July 2008, Eastbound down the Intercoastal Waterway. We traveled for a month, ending up on Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana. We decided to head back to Oregon for 6 months to tie up more loose ends and to make money for finishing the boat and preparing for offshore cruising in 2009.

I joined Spark in February 2007 and lost 20 lbs in 4 months. I had gained a few pounds back when I went back to Oregon for the summer and have struggled to lose it since. With the support of my Spark friends and my will to be healthier, I keep trying with baby steps and learning to step back up when I fall behind.

This is some advice a friend of mine gave me to get me on calorie cycling... I am going to get back into cycling today... Having this on my main page will help keep me educated and motivated.

WHITE products are BAD...
breads
rice

Processed foods are VERY BAD...
ANYTHING boxed (pre-seasoned stuff)
SODIUM, SODIUM, SODIUM!!!
Even those, easy, boxed dinners for stove or crock pots.

WHOLE GRAIN products are GOOD..
brown rice
whole grain wheat bread
oatmeal (not the pre-sugar kind!)

LEAN protein is your best friend..
chicken breast
turkey breast
Egg Whites
Tuna fish
Shellfish (beware of the high sodium, though!!)
Most Fresh fish fillets
LEAN beef (cut off and/or drain ALL fat)

As for calorie cycling, here are some numbers for ya. I put you down to do exercise 5 days per week, and that DOES mean at least 30 minutes of cardio..your boat work and side jobs are just bonuses. I put your weight in at 160 and as you drop 5 to 10 pounds, then we will re-work your numbers..as your calorie needs reduce as the scale does. I have you down for Extreme Fat Loss, as that is the best at producing the BIG scale drops. The smaller you become, then we can move you into the middle calorie range, which is where I am, and then you move on into maintenance mode.

**1280 is your 'average calorie range' and you never want to go lower than that. You get 2 'rest days', but Wed & Sat CAN NOT be those days, as those are your highest calorie days.

By eating in this zig-zag method, Kyla..your body is going to become confused at when you are going to toss it extra food and when you are not..so it will ALWAYS be on the alert and this is what prevents the dreaded plateau`s.

Now, if you are willing to exercise EVERYDAY, then we can RAISE your calories..so let me know if you want that to happen. You DON`T want to increase your fitness WITHOUT increasing your calories..so let me know. K? Same with the reverse..if you don`t do 5 days of cardio (consistently)then your numbers will need to be adjusted DOWN...and who wants that???

I learned yesterday about waist to hip ratio and found myself in a high risk level for increased chance of heart disease and diabetes. Both of these diseases scare me as they run in my family (my brother passed away with diabetes at 29)... Discovering this new risk, I am more aware of the healthy aspect of dropping weight, not just to look and feel good, but to stay healthy in my body.

Hey, Kyla!

After a VERY long break from the Spark world, I thought I'd pop on over and see how everyone is doing. It's good to see you are still fighting the fight and hanging in there! Sounds like you have run into a roadblock with your kidneys, though...sorry to hear that. But, I'm very happy to read that you have made some positive food changes and drop most of the process stuff. Yay!

I'm doing fine. Working hard, as always. Just had my birthday...the big 50! Woo Hoo!! lol Still doing great with my exercise and eating. Had surgery for a prolapsed bladder, so no more lifting heavy for me. But no biggie, I still do my strength training...it's just modified to be safe, and I still have the same amount of muscle. Go figure!! ha Never would have pushed my body so hard, if I knew that was possible! Live and learn.

Well, check in when you can, and I'll do the same. I'm just not needing Spark as a weight loss tool, anymore, as my head is FINALLY in the right place, so the weight just stays off as it should. It's a great place to be...and it sure looks like you will be meeting me there, yourself. Good for you!
