Scifimom's Diabetes Knock-Down
Eleven years ago, I had a momentous day. At the same time my husband was getting "mandatory retirement" (and, I later found out, a job offer from another company), my doctor was telling me test results confirmed I had "Syndrome X": type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure; menopause; and clinical depression. That was a triple shock for me. My blood pressure always had been borderline dangerously low. Although my father's family all had sky-high cholesterol, mine always had been low. But the diabetes pronouncement sounded like a death threat. My mother was one of six children, all battling type 1 diabetes. My grandfather had been type 1 since childhood, luckily participating in experimental insulin during World War I. Most of my cousins, my neice, and my nephew all struggled with diabetes. Diabetes doesn't just run in my family -- it gallops! I took this very seriously, with Metformin, Monopril, scrupulous diet, and a daily exercise routine. My doctor quickly decided the cholesterol reading was an error, and Monopril just sent my blood pressure plummeting to its habitual low state, so I dropped those meds. I went from painfully dragging myself out to walk for 15 minutes to speed walking with a friend for an hour a day. I added yoga, Pilates, and working with weights at the YMCA a few times a week. The weight fell off, I got to drop all the meds, I felt WONDERFUL. Partly for work and school, and partly for family issues, we moved to Tennessee. I lost my walking buddy, so exercise became more and more sporadic, and much of the weight I had lost crept back, in worse places. We've lost my parfents and my husband's father, and my mother-in-law has moved in with us, due to health issues. In the past few years, I've dealt with my two sons' chronic health problems, scrambling for college for both of them, and breast cancer (best possible outcome). My HbA1c has gone from perfect 5 to crappier 7.1, and I have "dawn syndrome" high glucose numbers when I wake up. So I'm back on meds (Janumet), and the doctor is threatening that I might have to go to insulin if things don't change quickly. Enough already! I'm tired of feeling like the universe is laughing behind my back. It's time to lose weight, get active, get healthy.
