Sometimes, habit comes first!

My motivation is not really getting me going these days. My wise trainer said to me the other day that I should just get in the habit of coming to the gym regularly, even if I don't give 100% effort each time. Why have I never applied this to my workouts at the gym? It's always been give at least 90% - more is better - but not less than 90%. Hahaha! I don't expect to be perfect each time but I didn't allow myself much margin for error, either. Why go if I'm not going to go hard?

It's only been a week but it's a whole new outlook for me. Just go! Get in the habit of going and eventually you'll be more consistent in the effort. So simple, yet so profound for me. A half-a$$ workout at the gym is much better that the nothing I would do at home.

Goooooooooo me! Woot woot!

No longer on hold, it's my time.........

Summer on hold.

I wouldn't have thought that I would have made no progress toward my health and fitness goals. I am very happy to say that I know how to maintain. The scale has remained between 195-198 all summer and I'm pretty proud of that! It's time to get out of this comfort zone and post some losses!

I've been on SparkPeople for 152 days.

I haven't lost the weight I thought I would by this point in time, but what I've gained is priceless and will only enhance my life.

I've grown so much personally over the past year. Maybe a health scare does that to you - brings things into much sharper focus. I've always been pretty open to change and I realized today that I've been experiencing some growing pains. A lot has changed for me on the inside. And my inside is catching up to the major change you see on the outside.

If you think of a diamond and how it begins in this doesn't start out all sparkly and gorgeous. It starts out pretty ordinary and bland - a lump of coal. Through the application of an awful lot of heat and pressure, and finally, being cut and polished - something beautiful is created.

Watch out for me world - I'm under pressure!

True change is from the inside out - not just the outside. Something to keep in mind as you change your body and your life.

Nobody's perfect.

I can talk the talk with the best of them. I don't, however, always walk the walk.

I don't have to walk it alone. I do need to be held accountable for whatever I decide to do.

Sometimes in life you get lucky and end up at a place you want to be. But luck won't keep you there. I got lucky once reaching my goal weight. I couldn't even tell you what I ate or how I worked out. I need a plan this time around. A DOCUMENTED plan to reach my goals.

I'll track my measurements monthly here as well as making my food and fitness trackers public. Nothing like being called out to help keep you honest and motivate you!

I know it's not April 1st but trust me, I won't be gaining any inches between now and then!

I have known for too long that being healthy isn't just about the number on the scale. So while I'm not going to stop getting on the scale, I'm COMPLETELY DONE letting it dictate my progress!

I'm breaking out the tape measure - at least once a month, maybe every 15 days (I'm impatient!) and I'll use it and the mirror to assess my progress. That, along with my doctor's help, will determine when I've arrived at my healthiest state of being.

So, my new goals will be to build muscle/increase strength and reduce body fat, especially belly fat, increase my aerobic endurance/lower my resting heart rate and reduce/eliminate the medications I currently take!

December, 2008
Everyone who needs to lose weight pretty much knows what they need to do to accomplish that task: eat less, exercise more. Expend more calories than you use, weight will go down. Not everyone is able to do this on a consistent basis. It's easier to give up something you don't need to survive than to have to change what goes in your mouth. I can give up TV! No problem! I can give up going anywhere or doing whatever but change what I have to eat? Why should I have to do that?

I've been on the 'need to lose' side of the scale for all of my adult life - sometimes needing to lose more weight than other times. But things seriously got out of hand when I relocated in 2001. The scale went up, up, up. The maximum reading on my analog scale is 300#. And in the summer of 2007 I was just about 20# away from it. I was in denial, too. I didn't put 1 and 1 together and say, hey, chica, this is way too much for you. I never looked in the mirror below my chin to really see what I looked like. Never. I didn't have that moment of revelation until someone took a group picture and I was right up front and I figured I'd look good cause I had on a cute outfit and my hair and makeup were done, right? Wrong! It's painful how big I look in that picture! I didn't even recognize myself! I knew I needed to do something but it wasn't until a month later that I actually started to pay more attention to what I ate.

It took a serious illness (pneumonia and a blood clot in my lung) to give my weight loss the jump start that kept my motivation going and the scale moving in a downward direction. Why did I need the shock of knowing just how fragile my life is to snap me out of it? I need to spend time on someone's couch and figure that one out.

So here I am today, 80 pounds lighter, but still about 50 pounds from where I need to be. But I've got that spark burning to get me there this time. And to keep me there. I'll never abuse my body again the way I'd been abusing it the last 6 years. I want to be here living life to the absolute fullest until it's over!

My Goals:
The big, important, non-superficial goal of mine is to be healthier. Reduce the medications I take to manage my blood pressure and cholesterol and to lower my resting heart rate to get the best mileage out of my heart that I can :))

My superficial goal is to be able to shop in any clothing store I want so I'm shooting for a clothing size in the 6-8 range...I love to shop and I love options! Why should I limit my options because of my size?

Shopping update (03/09): I can now shop @ Abercrombie, H&M and American Eagle. I haven't been in any other stores yet but it's nice to know I can try something on if I want and have a chance of being able to fasten it!

4/09: finish C25K training. I started it back in January and have been inconsistent lately. I'm not sure I want to be a runner but I don't want to leave this undone. Bad karma...

6/09: decided to follow the Galloway method of walk/run and take the pressure off of myself to do straight running

My Program:
Cardio: 45-60 min/day 5/days min

Strength: 30 min/day 3 days min

Personal Information:
Take baby steps! It's too easy to lose focus on your goals when you're not doing the little things! Don't be afraid to go back to basics and start small - again!

Other Information:
Keep steadily before you the fact that all true success depends at last upon yourself.

Hi I am new to Iron Maidens. Just a few days ago.
Thought I would drop by and say hello.
How is it going with you and your exercise program?
What kind do you use? I don't have money for a gym.
However, I do have DVDS and hand weights here at home.
Are they just as good as the gym? Trying to build muscle.
Trying to be able to lift 55 pounds at the most.
    (I was a stocker at Wal-Mart).
Going for now. Have a good day my friend. Holly emoticon

Be good to yourself! Life is so busy, it's probably been a while since you asked,"What makes me happy?" Or maybe you worry that taking some "ME" time will take away from people you care about. But (you're important, too)!
So today and every day ,do something that makes you smile.
