Regarding your question about how/if the rate of weight loss correlates with success in maintenance, as far as I know the studies that have been conducted don't demonstrate that there's a difference. I remember having a conversation about this with one of the other leaders on the maintenance team, who's a science researcher, a few years back and she told me that slow losers aren't necessarily any more likely than fast losers to keep the weight off in the long term.
Weight loss and maintenance is such an individual process, though, so I think that whatever method works best for you that you'll stick with in the long term is worthwhile. If you're continuing to get closer to your goals, even if it's slowly, then I'd say you're doing the right thing!
