A New Chapter

Hello and Welcome! My name is Susan. I am 55 years old. My healthy lifestyle journey began about eight years ago. Hello and Welcome! My name is Susan. I am 55 years old. My healthy lifestyle journey began about eight years ago. I have always been an active person - bicycling and hiking are my two favorite outdoor activities - but in spite of staying active and being a busy wife and mom, over the years I put on about 35 excess pounds that I just could not get rid of. Emotional eating was the culprit. On a difficult day you'd find me reaching for the Chips Ahoy and eating just about all of them in no time flat...plus whatever else I'd shove into my mouth... it tasted SO GOOD going down! And I'd feel better emotionally, but of course only for a very short while. Then guilt and frustration would show up and settle in (alongside of the extra pudge.) I'd start a new diet with fresh determination to stick with it, but would end up turning to food for comfort on days that I felt stressed or down. This yo-yo cycle repeated itself over & over for years. About eight years ago a significant stressor showed up in my life - but this time instead of turning TO food, I turned AWAY from it. I have no idea why. All I know is that I completely lost my appetite and taste for food, and to make a long story short, over the next few months not only did I lose the 35 pounds, I lost more than 50 pounds. I looked like a walking skeleton and my health suffered. My daughter signed me up with SparkPeople in 2009, but I did not become a truly active member until January 2012. My Spark story is a bit different in that I have used the website & resources in a reverse fashion - to help me regain to a healthy weight and find balance once again. I will be forever grateful to SparkPeople for this.

Much of life is about achieving & maintaining balance. But sometimes we go to extremes before we get there. That is what happened to me. I offer my sincere best wishes to you, fellow Sparker, in your journey towards better health and well being!

My Goals:
My number one goal is to maintain balance (as much as possible) in all areas of my life.

I am improving my kitchen skills! Cooking (once a dreaded chore) has become fun these days and I am enjoying feeding my family!

I plan to do some long-distance cycling this Spring and Summer.

I'm looking for a few places to volunteer in 2014.

Currently planning my 2014 garden!

My Program:
I generally exercise first thing in the morning for 45 minutes to an hour - it gets me going! I have a quiet time with prayer and Bible study. I plan my meals for the day to make sure I eat the recommended number of calories. Drinking 8 cups of water is a challenge! I usually average about 5 or 6 cups per day. Have to work on improving that.

Personal Information:
I have been married for 33 years to my high school sweetheart! We have three grown children, and enjoy spending time together as a family. We have a beagle named Leo (who is extremely cute, but very bad...)

Other Information:
Life is good. Even on those difficult days. :)

Welcome to SparkPeople!

My name is Sarah and Iíve been a member of this site off and on for a few years, and I do love it. I was here a few years back and lost 20 pounds, then went away and stopped using the site and gained all that weight back.

I have tried other diets and found that what I truly love about SparkPeople is the community, I believe it really helps keep you on track. Utilize the community here, add friends, join teams and challenges and post to the message boards.

Best wishes on your journey!
