Slow and Steady Wins the Race

Thirty something, weight loss has been a lifelong struggle exacerbated by life as professional (i.e. I spend about 12 hrs per day in my office) with little time for myself and exercise. Now add the fear that I'm teaching my teen daughter bad habits.

I am making changes. Now I wake up at 4:30 or 5:00 a.m. and workout before heading out for the day. If I don't make time for myself, who's going to? My daughter will have the example she deserves and I will have the healthy, fit body ...

My Program:
Working out 6 days per week for at least 60 minutes. I'm doing it at home for now because it's hard to get to the gym on my schedule. Right now Jillian Micheals is my trainer of choice. I also use a stationary bike at home for an average of 30 mins per day.

Update 6/2013- I've hired a
personal trainer to help me with strength training 2x weekly.

As for food, I am counting calories and restricting myself to 1400-1500 per day and trying the low-carb way of eating.

I have been SO BORING with the low carb. The first week I got into it and made a low carb chili recipe. Ever since I've been eating essentially the same stuff. I eat eggs, bacon and turkey sausage (or 1 of the 2) for breakfast. I have either salads, although I'm sick of them. I found carb balance tortillas that are Mission brand and have pretty much been eating quesadillas or tacos for most of my meals. Sometimes I make ground turkey and eat that with cheese on top and some veggies, but I do find it really hard to come up with a side dish other than a veggie!

I will say it's been like 23 days and I've lost almost 9 pounds which is great but it bothers me because the first 7 came off in the first 10 days, and we know a ton of that was water weight. Even with my carb nites (refeeding the carbs) I am still losing overall though so I am happy with that. I am going to give it a solid 2 months and then dedice when I'm ready to go back off it. Though I gurantee I will go back off, I wouldn't do this for long term, it's not for me forever LOL. ;)

When you are in keto, you might experience an inexplicable sweet taste in your mouth. As for your breath.. Some people get bad breath because the ketones are stinky.

As for the carbs, I mean gross carbs. I always had trouble keepi honest when I tried counting net.. When I did it the first time around& was successful, I started slipping like crazy when I tried net carbs, most diet foods that list net carbs are loaded with artificial sweeteners that can cause diarrhea and mess with ketosis anyway.

I suppose when you look at lowering your carbs, it all depends on what your goals are. if you are trying to get more protein in general, it doesn't matter what your target carb amount is. If your reason to go low carb is to lose weight faster, the point of it all is to be in keto to force the body to burn fat for fuel instead of carbs ingested. There's a tipping point where your body switches gears. I have read that some people do better in general with lower carb diets even without being in keto, so I suppose I that regard, it all depends on what you are going for!
