It's all about Quality of Life

My weight loss story is not typical and it's hardly inspiring. But here it is anyway...

When I started SparkPeople, I weighed 142 pounds. I'm 5'10", which means that my BMI was 20.4, well within the healthy range. So why was it a problem? Most of my adult life (I'm in my early forties) I've been about 120 pounds. (Yes, for my height, that's pretty thin, but with my build and activity level, it was normal.) The problem with the weight gain was that I have a bad knee. I ...

I wrecked it when I was a teenager and had to have it surgically repaired when I was in my twenties. I love the outdoors and being active. I especially love to run. After the weight gain, running was making my bad knee hurt-- a lot. So I decided to get the extra weight off. I lost 17 pounds on Spark and maintain at 125. It wasn't easy (I have so much respect for anyone who has lost more), but the SparkPeople tools made it manageable, and it was totally worth it. For me, it wasn't about getting healthy because I was already pretty healthy (although there's always room for improvement). It also wasn't about vanity or fitting into the right size (although I'm not going to lie, I like it that I can wear my favorite jeans again). For me, it was all about quality of life. I love it that now I can do all the things I love to do without worrying about how much it's going to hurt!

Hello Slim,

You commented on a comment I made on a children nutrition forum. I just wanted to thank you personally for mentioning the Ron Finely Ted Talks video. I watched it and am so glad I did. I am going to go to a local community garden and see what my son and I can do to help. I just wanted to say thanks for giving me a small push. I needed it :). Hope your coming week is a great one.

Many thanks,
Lesli Keith AKA Elisara2005

I loved your comment on my daughter's blog (Hayburner1969). You are very much like my DD#2 (5'10" and around 130 lbs), also a runner.
Long may we run!

Thanks so much for your advice about running. I will definitely talk to my doctor.
