Kicking the Sugar Habit/ Living Life Primally

I started on Spark in Feb 2007 and at the end of summer 2007, I'd lost 30 pounds and reached a low weight of 144, and did my first triathlon on August 26 2007. I looked and felt awesome.

Over the next two years, I would gain 10-15lbs in the winter, and then lose again in the summer.

The same pattern has held true each year, but now I'm bouncing between a higher start and end weight -- the lowest I've been since summer 2008 is probably 160.

Lots of little fits and starts to try to do better, but nothing has stuck. 6 years and I don't seem to have learned anything except how to yo-yo. I know HOW to lose weight, but I don't know how to motivate myself, or to maintain losses. For me it seems to be all or nothing, which is not a long term solution...

I'm reading a lot about WHAT foods to eat, and I'm more and more convinced that watching carbs (not counting veggies!!) is the way to go. I'm also trying for good gut health.

My Goals:
I want to avoid my nemesis (sugar), be consistently active, and keep my body in a state in which I feel athletic and not slobby.
I want to lose between 30 and 40 pounds total and find and maintain a healthy adult weight. I want to continue improving my running and biking strength and speed and continue to compete in races.


My Program:
Eat lots of veggies! No sugar or processed food. Keep grains to a minimum except on high cardio days. Drink lots of water and get lots of good fat and protein.

10k steps per day at least 6 days a week. Add activity into daily life wherever possible. Enjoy cardio 2-3 days a week.

Personal Information:
I'm Martha, I'm 34, from Virginia, but living in Connecticut with my husband and our cat. I work a desk job that some travel.

Other Information:
Music is central to my life and keeps me going. A good song will make me move, or help conquer my fear if I'm trying to ski a hard trail.
I also like to read, and like re-reading favorite books (I think I must have the record for number of times reading Pride and Prejudice.)

Hey Martha! I haven't been on here in forever...as in probably early 2009. I'm thinking about being more active on SP again, but it's changed so much! A little overwhelming! I now have 2 (!!) little girls, still working and trying to get back on the fitness wagon.

Looks like you are still active around here, so I thought I'd say "hi"!

Hey! Sorry for the lack of blogging & updating... I've been working late every day after spending last weekend doing nothing feeling sick, and I just haven't had a break.

I am feeling better - as of Monday, it was like somebody flipped a switch. Two weeks of paleo, and two weeks of feeling crummy... but I really don't think they're connected, just a big coincidence (I felt the same way last November, which was definitely not paleo; and I started feeling crummy on Thursday, whereas I didn't start eating paleo til Sat or Sunday... so not connected!) I will however accuse paleo for the unending headaches...

I think I'm going to continue cruising along with a lowered carb intake and not shy away from fats as much as I used to; however, I don't plan to stay paleo or forbid the occasional grilled cheese sandwich, fancy dinner out, or slice of birthday cake.

As for getting back into weight loss mode... I'm swamped this weekend but after that I plan to start exercising again - this past 2 weeks has been highly sedentary.

Sounds like Rachele is toying with paleo/primal eating part-time, or at least taking a halfway approach. Any tips for her? You've been a well of guidance and inspiration for me! emoticon
