Getting Fit (Body & Mind)

In order to break this pattern of cyclic existence, I am practicing the dharma while I can. I had a big reality check in early 2011 when I had a severe manic episode with accompanying psychosis and flashbacks that I recently found out caused damage to my brain (the neuropsychologist calls it cognitive dysfunction disorder) that led to a chain of events that changed my entire life as I saw it. At first I saw it as "the end of the world" for me, but with the help of my wonderful doctors and the basic Buddhist notion that love and insight work cooperatively to bring about enlightenment, I have sought out a real and permanent change in lifestyle (and for the first time am seeing myself and everything else as it REALLY is). I am not just looking to lose weight, but also afflictive thought and thought patterns, to become fit, to develop a healthy relationship with food, to sleep well, to deepen my meditative practice, to become a better mother, and a more loving and more intelligent and intuitive person.

My Goals:
To eat well, exercise, and meditate on a daily basis, as well as to keep a reflective record on all of these tasks. I find that when I take the time to reflect on my actions and record them, I am more successful.

My Program:
While I don't buy into the notion that any food is "good" or "bad" and I haven't banned anything from my diet, I eat mostly whole foods along with protein shakes and bars and drink 90% water. For my exercise program I am now following a walk/jogging program along with daily yoga and adding in training on the elliptical and regular strength training sessions. I also have a regular samatha and vipassanā meditation practice.

Personal Information:
I'm from Wisconsin. I was brought into Buddhism as a Rinzai Zen Buddhist but have since transitioned into the Theravada tradition as my own personal views are very traditional. I have a 4-year-old son and I am on disability for Bipolar I disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and anxiety.

Other Information:
I have a long history of working in and being interested in medicine and health care. I was a CNA for years, have a degree in medical transcription, was working towards a degree in Health Information Management until my bipolar disorder became too debilitating, and I also tried out the medical assistant profession but it wasn't my cup of tea. My other fascination is English and drama. I'm also a novelist and sometime playwright, so I love to write and you will often see me posting blogs. I also love to read--my favourite author is Bret Easton Ellis. My favourite current film is The Great Gatsby. My favourite current television show (although I rarely turn on the tv) is Game of Thrones. My favourite band is The Killers.

How 's April working for ya? So far, I can't get my clothes to cooperate with my pedometer, my clothes are getting loose, I guess! Have some smaller pants on order, and in the meantime, I stick with drawstrings and just winging it! Hope to get down to 200 soon, and reward myself with an activity tracker, but it's slow going!! Hope it's better for you!! emoticon
