Hello. I am an insulin dependent diabetic who turned 40 this year. I would suspect that most people on SparkPeople are here mainly to lose weight. Weight is not my main motivation. I have never been real concerned about that, even though I really should lose about 40 pounds. My problem is with my blood sugar. I've also begun to change my eating habits, as well. Hey, if I lose weight in the process (which also helps the BG), all the better.

My Goals:
Maintain consistent Blood Sugar levels between 80-150.

Calorie intake between 1860-2210 to lose, under 2800 to maintain.

Right now I'm just watching my calorie intake, but I hope to add some exercise in the future.

If you are an insulin dependent diabetic, I'd seriously recommend you read Richard Bernstein MD's "The Diabetic Diet" and his other book "The Diabetic Solution". He has had Type 1 diabetes since he was 12 & was told he wouldn't live past 42, but he is a very healthy 78 now. He has lectures on YouTube.

His diet has very little carbs and he says he has lived well for years without eating any fruit. He has none of the complications that most diabetics have. I think avocados are one of his staple foods. He also recommends doing muscle building exercise which he says lows the need for insulin. I've learned so much from his lectures.
