Me & My kids 2009
Me, May 2008
Shared Food & Fitness Trackers

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting --
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
I'm Amy. I am 44 years old and a single mother of two very active 7 year olds, both of whom have multiple special needs as a result of being born extremely premature. My main motivation for losing weight is to be healthy, first and foremost. I need to be to keep up with my kids!
I want to lessen the pain in my knees and other joints and I want to avoid getting diabetes.
Beyond that, I'd like to achieve a weight where my body is fit and comfortable being as active as I want to be.
I prefer to measure my success in terms of increased fitness and general health more than a number on the scale. I'm not doing this to be "skinny" or to achieve somebody else's ideal of beauty.
After a long period of upheaval and change, life has finally reached a point where I can focus on taking care of me.
When I joined Spark People last October, I was just looking for a way to track my calories. This site offers so much -- a really well-designed system of rewards and reinforcement and community, as well as the science of fitness and nutrition. Its become a huge positive addiction just to cheer for the success of real friends (even if I don't know their names), commiserate with their setbacks, and watch the Spark Points add up!
I want to be healthy and happy in my own skin.
Weight-wise, I plan to be at or below 190 by my birthday in December.
ACHIEVED - Wt 189 12/19/2010!
Continue the positive momentum of healthy changes in my life, by continuing to make tiny incremental changes, building those into habits that add up to monumental change, easily, an inch at a time.
Be at or under 175 by my children's birthday - 2/28
Be light enough to use my son's indoor therapy swing (the weight limit says 175, but I think I want to be substantially smaller than that - probably 150 at most!)
Eating less and moving more.
Tracking what I eat and how much I exercise.
Following the recommendations of the weight-loss study I am enrolled in to eat between 1200 - 1500 calories each day and to exercise most days of the week, gradually increasing in duration and intensity.
