I'm not good at balancing work and losing weight, so for the last year I haven't really lost anything. But my hours have been cut back a bit and I think I'm getting engaged soon, so now seems like a good time to start this again. :)

Thank you! When I started cosplaying, I didn't know how to sew at all. Most of my costumes were what I like to call "closet costumes." You just dig around in your closet/goodwill until you kind of throw together a costume!

I started getting interested in making things a little more accurate, though, so I started to learn how to sew after that. I'm mostly self-taught. I had friends in college that helped me sew some of my first costumes. They pretty much did all the work, and I made our props& did other fabrication-type stuff to contribute.

I've been at this for about 15 years now, so I have a little bit of experience. I can tell you this, though: If you want to learn, go for it! I know that Jo Ann's and other places have small sewing classes you can sign up for. I think if I'd done something like that, I would have learned a lot faster! The most important thing, IMO, is learning how to work the machine and read a pattern. Everything else is kind of improvisation. I'm still learning new things every project! For this one, I learned how to shape the ends of poly blend cording by burning the heck out of it with a lighter and mashing the melted edges into the shape I wanted. I've sealed it with heat before, but never tried rounding the tips. It worked out well!
