2013- a Year with new challenges and victories to be won!

I am a 71 year old with Type 2 diabetes diagnosed in May 2008. I retired to take care of my parents but both Mom and Dad have gone home to the Lord.

When I was diagnosed I did what I had never been able to do before for looks. I started this journey to lose weight and change my lifestyle. I knew that this was a journey like no other I had taken.

I had lost before but it was just a phase and I never arrived at a weight I could sustain.. I dieted to lose the weight only. In my inexperience I always thought I could eat "the old way" again after I reached my goal. Now I am committed to changing my food choices and exercise habits forever! As a Type 2 diabetic I know that this will help delay possible complications if not prevent them entirely.

Have had some backsliding, but I am on track again and know that this is something I can do.

I walk with The Lord at my side and I have a very supportive family.

I have really enjoyed my time here at SparkPeople and look forward to meeting many new friends who have similar goals. I never realized how isolated I was on the journey before.

The pictures are my buddy Henry Louis Bonaventure or Harry for short and Millie . They have become my first exercise buddies although I think Harry is trying to gain the weight I am losing.

April 2009 update. Brought home a sister for Harry, Millicent Rose Chiara or Millie as we fondly call her. They have become buddies. Hope to post pictures soon.

My life is becoming a little more active as the weight has come off. It is amazing how carrying an extra person on your back all the time holds you down. I have started to work in the yard. It is taking me a long time but that is lack of knowledge and unfortunately the knees are still in bad shape. Had the left knee done in January and it is great. Will do the right one in September. Best decision I ever made.

All in all I am happy with my life and progress at this time. With the Lord's help and all the assistance I receive from friends at SparkPeople I am confident that I have started a journey that will lead to success.

September 10 2009
I recently reached my goal weight as set by my family doctor and the cardiologist. I am now in the exciting world of maintenance.

October 2013
Well if you have read this far you know that I am no longer at goal weight. I fell into old patterns and I have some weight to lose. I still struggle with exercise. I don't like it and am still searching for something I like.

Being around children as often as I am has been a true learning experience. I may not be a young woman, however, I am finding out many things from this beautiful little people.

Life is not boring to me, it is not mundane. It is full of wonder, pleasing smells, awesome colors, beautiful creatures, and breathtaking moments. Children know how to enjoy and appreciate life.

This is what I have learn from children: I think there is a secret to enjoying life more that most people overlook. A hidden way to feel so much more full every single day and it hides in its deceptive simplicity. Itís this: Love every single living thing you find and see them all through wondering eyes. Appreciate the details, notice the colors and textures and imagine you are seeing it for the very first time. See things as new.

What wonderful beauty is all around us.

Wow, it's a brand new day. One that has miracles for us, joy for us, new adventure, knowledge for our taking, and numerous messages and proof of how much we are loved. I hope that you can embrace and discover all that this day has in store just for you.

There is nothing that we can give to the Lord to repay His goodness and mercy but we can give offering of praise to show our gratitude.

I never truly understood how much my mother touched other peoples' lives by the messages she sent them or the cards until she left this world. Everyday she would write someone or send a card. She has been gone for 17 years, yet a month does not go by that some stranger comes up to me and ask me if I am my mother's daughter (I look so much like her). Than I am told what a blessing she was in their life.

Wow, what a beauty legacy she left--the gift of love by helping others wither her kindness and words.

I pray that I can, like her, be a blessing to others. This quote reminds me of my mother: The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others.- Albert Schweitzer

A loving heart is beautiful to everyone. It does not fade in beauty, it is always admired and enjoyed. We spend so much time concerning our selves with our outer appearance. But our inner appearance is what is most important. It covers all wrinkles, aging spots and any imperfections you see. No lotions, creams, make-up or plastic surgery can make you as beautiful as a loving heart can.

I think your heart is beautiful!
