September 2012 - one of the first "OMG, I have to do something about my weight" pictures - I realized while going through pictures on my phone that I had gained 25-30 pounds since the first of the year (and a lot of that since April when I met by grandson from Jacksonville, Florida)
I have been struggling with my weight after being ill for most of 2011. The treatment and diagnosis process required prednisone, other corticosterioids, a multitude of prescriptions, and an open lung biopsy. I was finally diagnosed with sarcoidosis and now a little over a year since diagnosis I am off of all medications.
I am extremely uncomfortable with the weight gain caused by the medications and reduced activity. I am now nearly 75 pounds heavier than my normal and most comfortable/confident weight. Although I would prefer to lose all 70+ pounds, I would be happy to lose at least 50 pounds which would get me back to a comfortable me.
Update January 16, 2016:
I did lose approximately 25 pounds using SparkPeople. But life happened and I slacked off tracking, exercise, etc. However, I maintained my weight for over a year, which I fully believe was due to the habits SparkPeople helped me form.
Last spring I tried a different plan and lost another 25 pounds. Over the summer I gained a little back and then gained 15 pounds in one month in the fall, putting me back at the 200 I had maintained after losing weight with SparkPeople. I had a hysterectomy in December 2015 and with all the resulting down time decided I wanted to take better care of myself. I quit smoking before my surgery and have only had a couple slips since then. I have focused on my water intake the last few weeks and started using an elliptical machine last week to gently walk (it's to cold and uneven for outside walking right now). I am just a couple weeks from being medically cleared by surgeon at which time I plan on adding yoga and strength training to the mix as well as amping my walking up to an actual cardio workout.
I'm not going to try to change everything at once as that was not sustainable, as I found out last year. SparkPeople worked for me before, and I'm sure it will work for me again!
My "get me going" goal: Lose 25 pounds by December 31, 2012.
My "on the downhill slide" goal: Lose 50 pounds by June 1, 2013.
My "WOOHOO" goal: Lose 75 pounds by December 31, 2013.
Action steps to achieve my goals: Make healthier food choices and limit caloric intake to the recommended range based upon my end goal and exercise at home at least 10 minutes per day, working up to at least three 30-minute sessions per week.
Replacing the bad with the good!!!
Starting with small dietary changes and light exercising.
For instance I cut my daily coffee by half AND cut the amount of sugar added to my coffee by half.
Increased water intake to 6-8 cups per day.
Decreased soda intake; almost eliminated thanks to increase in water intake (it now tastes too sweet).
And for the first time in my life I am tracking my food/beverage intake and found I don't take in enough calories.
I am also easing into regular exercise by doing short, low impact workouts daily to remind my muscles they should do more than sit at a desk all day! I plan to make daily exercise a habit, even if it is for only 10-15 minutes.
