Hello. Here's a little info about me, my weight loss and fitness story, and a few of my other interests. See you around the message boards!

Fitness Minutes: 192,892

My Goals:
I started my weight loss program in May 2002, when I weighed 390+ pounds, and my doctor was screaming about all the health problems this was causing--diabetes, high cholesterol, etc. I''m at 199 now, and though I still have a little bit of a spare tire (mostly loose skin, I think), my health problems are under control, and my weight is no longer a limitation in my life. At this point I mainly want to make sure I don''t start gaining the weight back again, which I''ve done before. And I want to stick with my exercise routine, which I actually enjoy.

My Program:
I never really went on a "diet." I started by limiting the amount of saturated fat I ate to 15 grams/day and trying to eat more healthy foods. I also started doing a little bit of exercise every day, mostly walking at first, and even that was hard, but it got easier quickly. About 6 months into this routine, I was able to start increasing my exercise intensity quite a bit, and this really accelerated the weight loss. At this point, I take in a fairly high amount of calories most days (about 2500) with a balanced diet, but I also burn up about 5000 cals/week with aerobics (5-6 times/week), strength training (2/week), and lots of walking (no car).

Personal Information:
My name is Dean. I''m 65, have 3 grown kids and 4 grandkids, have graduate degrees in philosophy and Human Services, and have previously been certified as a personal trainer and weight management consultant.

Other Information:
Learning about nutrition and exercise science has really helped me fine tune my program. There are good courses at most community colleges, well worth the investment.

In addition to my fitness and health interests, I''m an avid fan of obscure philosophical poetry--especially Rilke and T.S. Eliot--and 1960''s music.

    I suspect that you are surprised by the “push-back” and negative feedback that you are receiving regarding the recent changes to the Spark pages. I am not a fan of the changes either. When I reflected on why is everyone so upset, it took me back to my days of working in the hospital in mission integration. Culture is not any easy thing to change. Something that you may not think is important may have already become imbedded in the psych of the members. You have created a culture at Spark and the membership has brought into it, thrives on, and now accepts as their own (legacy). When you adapt and make changes without consulting and informing as to the “why” ; you risk damaging the culture you have created.

    Dear Coach Dean - I have enjoyed so many of your articles/blogs here on Spark People and really appreciate the way SP encourages us to develop a holistic sense of well-being, not just weight loss. I am SO sad at the recent changes to our individual Spark Pages which were very personal expressions of our individuality. If you have any influence in this, can you please represent the human side of this traumatic change to the powers that be? I truly feel I am kind of grieving for having my lovely Spark Page 'taken away'!

    I would have hoped that a community like Spark, which provides so many resources for holistic well-being - could have managed this change more compassionately.

    Perhaps you could consider doing a blog on how to help ourselves adjust to this top-down imposed change!

    I don't like the changes made to my page either! I have totally lost my motivation over it and may even leave my spark page altogether. I binged all day yesterday and that is not what this site is supposed to do, it is supposed to give us support-part of that support was creating my own page with my own quotes, themes and dreams. Please consider taking the pages back to the way they were.

    While doing some of the SP Challenges, I have read some of your articles on motivation. Thank you for sharing! The idea that motivation is taking responsibility for our own choices and not seeing ourselves as victims is brilliant. I see that there is a group of 10 blogs you have done on motivation. I will be reading them soon.
