Some of the members of my Summer 5% Challenge team, Determined Daisies, have done a list of 10 good things that occurred due to our healthy lifestyle change. I haven't written a blog in quite a while and this seemed like a good topic, so here's my list...

1.) Way more energy!
2.) I finally feel like I'm treating my body the way God wants me to treat it.
3.) Better self esteem!
4.) I'm stronger physically and emotionally.
5.) I have more endurance.
6.) I have more positive self talk.
7.) I am feeding my family healthier meals.
8.) I have a spark community for support!
9.) I know that I can and will reach my goal!
10.) I am getting almost daily exercise!

So there it is. Through this journey I am coming to realize that I am stronger than I think I am. All of my other weight loss attempts were just that, attempts. This time it's permanent. I wasn't living up to my full potential!

Assignment #3

For assignment #3 in preparation for the Summer 5% challenge, we were asked to answer some questions about the reasons why we want to lose weight and what we expect when we meet our goals.

The first question is, why do I want to lose weight? I want to lose weight so that my kids can see why living a healthy lifestyle is a good thing and can be done. I want to reach the point where I am no longer self conscious of how I look in certain clothing. I'd like to go shopping and be able to wear what I like not only what is slenderizing and hides my fat rolls. I'd like to have more energy to play with and chase after my kids. I guess I just want the way I've always felt on the inside to match how I look on the outside.

Question number 2 is, How do I want to feel? I want to feel energized and not bogged down by extra weight. I want to feel pretty in smaller sizes of clothing. I want to feel stronger with more muscle. I want to feel like I'm giving my kids the benefits of good nutrition. Most of all I want to feel confident in myself, that I can work at a goal and achieve it.

The 3rd question is, what will I be able to do with a slimmer, healthier body? I will be able to do a lot of physical activities that I have not been able to do in the past. I will be able to put on a bathing suit and not feel like I look disgusting. I will be able to go into a dressing room without coming out feeling defeated.

And finally, they ask you to list what you'd like to change. For me the biggest one is how I look at and treat my body. I want to treat it like the temple that it is.

Summer 5% Challenge Commitment

I've just joined my first real SparkPeople challenge and I'm so excited! I had read JEN3582's blog about the challenge and it made me want to check it out. I think this will be the motivation I need to keep losing.

The challenge hasn't officially started yet but one of the things that the leaders would like you to do in preparation is post your commitment on your spark page, so here it goes...

Exercise:
I will do one of my at home exercise dvd's for an hour at least three times a week. On the days that I don't do that I will walk outside or find Spark exercises to do for at least thirty minutes. I think to help with this I will set out my workout clothes in the morning before I leave for work. That way they'll be staring me in the face when I get home. This will be the biggest change for me. Up until now I have not been faithfully exercising. It's time to make it a priority!

Diet:
I will stay withing my calorie ranges and get my fruits and vegetables in. I will try new and healthy recipes for my family. I will keep my portion sizes under control and stop eating when my body tells me it's full. The most difficult time of day for me is after work. I think that planning my meals out will help with this. If I know before I get home what I'm going to make and how much of it I'm going to eat than I should be able to stay within my calorie range for the day.

I am super excited about this challenge! I hope it's the push that I need to keep up with this new healthy lifestyle that I've started. My plan is to be very active with my team members during this challenge. This should keep my head in the game.

Here comes the Weekend!!!!

Since I have started really trying to change the way I live and become healthier I've noticed that the weekends scare me. Does this happen to anyone else? I do pretty well during the week when I am pretected by my routine and always close to a computer to track, but I never know what to expect when the weekend rolls around. It's better when we're out of the house and busy. I'm less likely to grab something to eat just for the sake of eating. It's also more difficult to get my water in. I guess I just need to plan my weekends better so I'm not taken off guard. It's not like they're a surprise, they happen at the end of every week!

I would love to hear what my fellow Sparkers do to stay on track over the weekend. I'm so proud of my progress and I know that if I could conquer this one issue I could do even better! I could use any advice you all are wiling to give!

    Well, weekends are hard especially if you don't know for sure what your plans are so it's hard to plan your meals. But, we can try. I have problems when we decide to go out to dinner at the last minute or have unexpected company. I like it better when I know what my plans are so I can plan meals. All you can do is try to make good choices when faced with these situations and use portion control. emoticon

Camping

This is my very first blog entry. It's kind of intimidating, I won't lie. I enjoy everyone else's blogs so much and they are so motivational that I have to try one for myself. I think I'll just discuss the issues that I'm dealing with and depending on the day, they can be plenty. So here goes nothing!

The thorn in my side lately has been camping. I know that sounds funny, even to me, because I love to camp but I have never camped and tried to eat healthy at the same time. My parents decided to get the type of campsite where you leave your trailer there year round. This means that we can camp any time we get a free night. This has turned out to make my family's summer much more exciting. It's a cheap way to get away from home and enjoy the outdoors. The kids love it! My fourteen month old likes to find the dirtiest part of the campsite, sit on her butt, and see what she can slip into her mouth without anyone noticing. So far I've only had to fish out an acorn... she's so fast!!! This is her in the swimming hole. She had a blast.



Okay, now to the dilemma. For some reason my brain goes into vacation mode whenever we go camping. This means I don't keep track of what I'm putting into my mouth. It's all of the bad stuff that goes along with camping. Stuff like hamburgers, ice cream, and s'mores along with the fast food meal we grab on the way down there. I need to figure out how I can spend the weekends away and have fun, without always going over my calories. One good thing about getting away, is that I do get a lot more exercise! If I'm not chasing my kids around I'm hauling at least one of them in a wagon.


I would post pics of the twins but I couldn't get them to stand still long enough to get a good one.

    I love camping as well!! And it is hard to make good decisions when camping...but I found this year that I only pack the foods that I know I should be eating. We grilled several different things instead of burgers/hotdogs. We also had a lot of fresh veggies and fruits. We had a lot of hiking trails near where we camped too so that helped offset the slight over indulgences. :) You'll get it under control...You're on a roll.

    Awesome and congrats on your first blog post! Doesn't it feel great?! Camping is great but I feel you. It is hard to stay on track! Cute cute cute pics! :) :) Just think how much more active you are though camping then sitting around at home. It evens out a bit! :)

Camping and trying to eat healthy is challenging. We just got back from a camping trip and I can tell you I didn't eat healthily and I ate way too much! But I am paying for it now!!!

That is amazing that you can get away when you have a free night! It has to be very relaxing!!! Your little one is adorable!!!

Just make small changes.... one step at a time! Start by tracking everything no matter what. It really makes you realize how many calories you are eating! It may be a wake up call enough to cut back on the things/amounts you are eating or to make better choices. If that isn't motivation enough, start trading some unhealthy things for healthier things. Such as, baked chips for potato chips or a fruit or vegetable instead. It is great that you are still being active though!! That will definitely help!

  I completely understand what you are saying, the vacation mode notion. So what you can try is making meal plans for YOU while you are at the trailer. Be sure to include some kind of treat for yourself, track all your food and your fitness - including the hauling the kids around in the wagon. Maybe there is a pool or a rec center where you can relax by yourself while the kids are napping.

    Camping is fun. Perhaps you can make trail mix? Nuts, dried fruit, carob instead of chocolate, etc. Snacking on that will fill you up and give you energy and nutrients your body needs. Maybe buy lean ground beef instead of regular ground beef for the hamburgers. Last time I went camping out, we did tortillas. There has to be a cook book or a list of recipes for camping out too - maybe invest or investigate that.
