Good Run

Saturday, December 04, 2010

We went out in the snow again today. My wife and i have been living in FL for the past ten years, and haven't seen snow for a long time. My daughter was five when we moved away so she barley remembers snow. On a whim i decided to take our Dog, Happy (12 lb Bishon)

When i go running i am usually trying to run faster or longer or brake some other personal record, but today was not one of those day. My wife is not really motivated in the cold i want to go faster to warm up and she wants to go slower. Same with hills, i want to keep a steady pace and plow up them while she tends to get bogged down. Happy was just trotting along happy to be out for the jog, enjoying the smells , and probably wishing i wold go faster.

I guess i was a little inpatient to because i had no knee pain. I have days when i cant break a 15 min mile pace because my knees wont let me but today there was no pain, and i wanted to run. FYI, on the bad days my wife smokes me lol.

so finally as we neared the last mile and the snow was picking up pace, i decided "screw the stop watch". I told myself "Enjoy the moment" and slowed down to have a lovely walk with my Wife Laurie and my Dog Happy, who was now covered in mud.

I think God intentionally messes up my plans sometimes just so i will stop and see what is important in life.

God Bless, and happy sparking

The Shamless Runner

Friday, December 03, 2010

I started running 18 months ago, and one of the first things i liked about it was the fact that unlike other sports, there seems to be no set dress code. Other sports have name brands and unofficial uniforms that announce to the world that at the very least they know what to where for the sport and are more than nubies.

Not so for runners, we where whatever is the most comfortable. With the exception of a good pair of running shoes. However even those are based on comfort. Translated for me (what causes the least pain.) So 18 months ago i bought my first pair of ASICS, the problem is i have worn them out, there is a hole my little toe is trying to wiggle its way out of. So i do what any self respecting runner would do that cant shell out another 90-200 dollars for a new pair of shoes does. I ducked taped the hole. Now let me say, only the males of are species seem to be this self deprecating. This may sound Chauvinistic but I have yet to see many female runners duck tape there shoes.

So if you run into me on the Greenbelt today, You will remember my little tale and hopefully laugh your way through the last painful half mile.

I have three identical pairs of ASICs Gel Cumulus 11's, size 10.5, and they all have more than 600km on them. Actually, the oldest has more than 800km and are no longer for running. I asked Santa Claus for another pair for Christmas, and even sent him the URL to the clearout section of the web site 'cause the 11's are no more - long live the 12's!

You are looking at it all wrong. The shoes are not running shoes, they are athletic equipment. If I call them shoes that means I have more shoes then my wife and I could never live that down.

Snowy Run

Wednesday, December 01, 2010

I went down to the Green belt today (local walking trail). It was underwater and the ducks were riding the rapids down the overrun creek. I was about to go home and run on the tread mill (my last resort), when i remembered that the upper part of the trail would be above water. So i drove up to the head of the trail, a light snow was falling, and the fair weather runners had stayed home. From this starting point it was all down hill for a mile. As i started out it was relay cold my hands were starting to freeze on my warm up walk. At five minutes i started to run, taking very small steps as the trail was down hill and slippery. I got to the 9/10 of a mile point and the trail was washed out at the bottom of the ridge so i turned around and headed back toward the car. The uphill mile was hard i kept wanting to stop and walk. In my Christan yoga program (praise moves) we meditate on scripture wile we stretch, so i prayed and started meditating on songs like "lead me to the cross, Jesus lover of my Sole". Before long i was back at the car and had finished the 1.8 miles in just under 30 min. I enjoyed the time alone on the trail with God they don't come often, and the snow was beautiful.
