I did it...

Sunday, October 07, 2012

My first 5K is in the books!! I'm so glad I chose to do my "training" at the Veteran's Cemetery, with it's slightly rolling hills, as the entire course was "hilly"... It was a great challenge and I'm proud of my time of 41:13, as that beat my personal (practice) best my two minutes. As an added bonus, I had the privilege of meeting some really friendly people during the event! The young man that won finished in a little over 20 minutes with the young female winner coming in around 27 minutes. I finished about mid pack.... a mere 4 minutes behind my dear son's fifteen year old son.... not too shabby.....
Now, I'm ready for my next challenge!
Have a wonderful day!!!

Perfect timing...

Friday, October 05, 2012

“Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat. ”

¯ Theodore Roosevelt
I received this quote from a friend yesterday and the timing was perfect, as my gifted students and I have been discussing the importance of NOT giving up or NOT trying when something is hard.... I am blessed to work with such bright, talented students, but am disappointed when one or more of them makes the decision to quit an activity, this time it's band... not because they don't like it, but because it's HARD!!! We had a lengthy discussion about how important it is that we ALL try hard things, as those hard/difficult activities help us grow and mature... it was a very indepth discussion, but suffice to say, that this quote is a perfect follow up and I will be sharing it with them as well!!!

I hope I'm wrong, but I think a lot of our kids now just don't get that everything isn't handed to them - they have to DO something too! emoticon

Have found with pre-teens or early teens when you explain playing an instruments can make them popular with the opposite sex, it makes the task easier. That is from observing, I would have never thought of that angle.

Makes you think..

"What a child doesn't receive she can seldom give later."- P.D. James

This quote makes me think not only of the children/young adults I work with everyday but we adults who seem to struggle with relationships and other life issues... could it be simply "we" didn't get what we needed when as children? Compassion? Love? Discipline? Forgiveness? Understanding? The list could be endless... makes me think of how I may have fallen short as a parent..... teacher... wife.... Not beating myself up, as I am and will continue to be a work in progress... just have the need to reflect from time to time!

Have a blessed day!

I agree with YOBOELI. There too are the ones, who see "outside the box". They choose to leave behind the chaos in which they are raised. I do not agree with the 2 parent dynamic. My mother taught me, "just because we are poor, does not make us trash!" She was a single parent with 5 children. I had a choice, as does everyone else... Each person's failure to grow, is a choice within themselves.

This is why I shudder to think of all the children who have not grown up in a strong two parent home with a good marriage and family values. There is too much divorce and abuse in our society. As a consequence everyone has major trust issues and therefore our entire nation is handicapped due to the deterioration of the family.

In some cases that is true, but there are some that have gotten everything they needed and still they lack the things they need in everyday life. You can give them the tools it is up to them to use them. Aren't we all works in progress LOL Don't be too hard on yourself.
