Goodbye, marshmallow!

Friday, April 06, 2012

I recently discovered a magazine called "Experience L!fe." I bought it last week and I LOVE it! There are great articles in it, and it covers a bunch of different topics. But there was one article in particular that caught my eye. It was about a food writer-turned-power lifter. She was starting to feel marshmallow-y and wanted to do something about it. So she joined a gym and started lifting.
The point is that I have been feeling marshmallow-y lately, too. Not fat, but not great, either. I looked at pictures of myself from Pittsburgh and saw that there is definitely a layer of marshmallow that could go.

So what am I doing to get rid of the marshmallow?

I'm recommitting to running. Being in Pittsburgh was just what I needed to give me a push to get back into a regular running schedule.

Brad and I are going to be very diligent about what we eat. We are reading a book right now - The Blood Sugar Solution - and we've decided to go gluten-free and dairy-free for a while. (Well, mostly gluten- and dairy- free.) It's been a little over a week (not counting JASR!) and I feel great! I don't totally know how to describe the feeling - my stomach feels lighter, and I just feel better overall. I don't know if it's because I know I'm *supposed* to feel better or because I actually *do* feel better. But either way, it's going really well so far!

I'm being very careful about tracking my food. This has been the greatest tool for me in getting my 2011 weight off.

I'm doing longer, more intense workouts. It's a good thing that my body has gotten more efficient and now I need these harder workouts to keep on pace with my goals!

I'm loving the body I have now. I *don't* feel fat, but I know that there is an awesome, muscular body that's just itching to come out.

Good luck on the training!

Have you been strength training? that's been the key to my feeling so much better, and it's better for your body, too. Strength training helps your muscles burn more calories at rest, and makes everything, including your cardio, more effective.

I love strength training, and I'm planning on doing at least a little today, because I don't have to move my head to lift a 5 lb dumbell. :) Stupid vertigo...

Here's to getting rid of the marshmallow... I'm working on mine. I think it's going away! Certainly looks like it to me:

Spring break has sprung!

Wednesday, April 04, 2012

I can't even believe there are only 25 days left until the Tough Mudder. While I feel like I'm doing a good job preparing for it, I really have no idea what to expect! Yikes.

My arms and legs are sore from Tuesday's workout and massage appointment, so today was a rest day. Tomorrow I'll be down at my mom's house, and I'm running with one of my Tough Mudder teammates. I get to break in my new sneaks! I went to the running store after school today, and the guy there was SOOOO helpful. He answered all my silly questions and I ended up with a pair of ASICS Gel-Kayano 18s. I'm really looking forward to getting back into ASICS - I liked them the first time around, but then I moved on to something with a little more support. But I'm hoping that these work for me and help my knees get better. Interesting thing I learned - the Gel-Kayanos are the comparable ASICS to the Brooks Adrenaline (which I was running in) but there is twice as much padding in the ASICS. So I'm thinking that my knees are going to be happier.

Also, when the guy checked out my old shoes, he saw that there were little "wrinkles" in the side. This meant that the cushioning was breaking down, so it was definitely time for some new shoes. I'm glad I went! And I got 10% off because I'm a member of the local running club. Those shoes are not cheap!

Spring break is here! Time to bust out the crazy workouts.

Today was pretty good eating wise. I did cave and eat a bag of peanut M&Ms - I felt awful after I did it, but dang that chocolate was just what I needed at that point in the day. Enchiladas for dinner again - mmm.

- enjoy my morning facial (one of my favorite ways to treat myself)
- meeting with my financial planner
- run!
- dinner with mum and brother

Hey, one bag of M&Ms is hardly worth beating yourself up over. :) Allow yourself a treat now and again!

I can't believe you're so close to the TM... it feels like it's so far away for me! (Next year, FEbruary, I think?)

Short one just to get back into the blogging habit.

- sweat sweat sweat it out at the gym this morning
- water water water!
- enjoy my massage after school. I have some shin pain after this weekend's run - ugh.
- look at some new running shoes...? I am thinking about going back to ASICS; I like my Brooks, but I miss the cushioning of the ASICS. I'd like to find the perfect combo of stability and cushioning.
- Stick to some good clean eating. Hubs and I spent last night cooking freezer meals for me for the week. We have stuffed peppers and enchiladas filling up the fridge. Tonight is enchilada night. Yahoo!

Alright. Time to head out to the gyyyyyyymmmmmmmm

You did awesome on that race this weekend!!!
hope the massage helps the shins and the IT...
You might want to try on some Mizunos if you haven't before. I have tried on others but always come back to Miz....they're cushy, super light and supportive(I need it for pronation).
Carrie-meeting you this weekend was super! I have tears now just thinking of that beautiful smile and realizing my fave blogger was hugging me!!!! OMG!!(please pass the tissues....AGAIN!)

I've been doing freezer meals this week, too! I like to just make a double batch of dinner and put half into a zip-lock bag or aluminum baking dish and freeeze it. Then, there are complete dinners in my freezer ready to thaw and cook!

We're having enchiladas tonight, too!!

oooooooh time for the 'Burgh!

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

I took a sick day today and I'm feeling almost 100% better than I did this morning. Hooray! Got my bags packed; just a few more things to throw in tomorrow after school and they I'll be on my way to Pittsburgh! I'm not making the whole drive tomorrow - I'll drive for about 2.5 hours, stop, and make the rest of the journey on Friday morning. I can't wait! Tonight I'm baking my pound cake to take along, and I just printed out my "then and now" pictures to post on the wall of the Rose Barn. Bobby had this great idea for all the Sparkers to put up pictures, and then send it off to Spark World. I can't wait to see everyone's pictures!

Today was really lazy, but in a good way. I parked myself on the couch for most of the day, and I got some easy stuff done for the weekend. Honey and I went to pick up my car - I got an oil change, tire rotation, and my mechanic checked everything out to make sure my car was OK for the drive. Yahoo!

I can not WAIT to see everyone! My camera is going to get a serious workout this weekend!

What is bringing you to the burgh? Hopefully the rain stays away for you! I know it is windy and threatening rain right now. It better be nice on Saturday because I have a 5k, but I am also kind of hoping for a miserable day to help me 'train' for the TM. EEEKS, 32 days. Wow, just got a knot in my stomach from writing that!

Couch, oh couch.

Monday, March 26, 2012

The two days of rest did me well. This morning's workout was great! The rest of the day, not so much. By the end of the day, I was beat. I think I'm not totally over what I had this weekend. Bleh. I slept for most of the afternoon when I got home. Honey was nice enough to let me hang out on the couch and be lazy. It's amazing what a little sleep can do, though. I already feel better after some rest. Tomorrow morning is going to be a morning off - give my body a little more rest. Have to be well for Pittsburgh!

Not much else to say... back to the couch.

At least me for me - acknowledging the need for rest is sometimes harder than the things I need to do. Be kind to yourself.
