mmm....ribs

Today was my fiance's birthday. We went out to eat at a smokehouse and they had ribs. I love ribs. Since I have been tracking my calories, I am really paying attention to what I am eating.
I had:
A salad with dressing on the side. I dipped my fork in the dressing and used hardly any at all. yay! I kept my hands off the bread. I LOVE bread, and my fiance said it was really good. But I knew that bread was coming soon in crouton form in my soup.
French Onion Soup: I was a little nervous about the cheese and crouton, but it wasn't covered with cheese (hallelujah!) and there were only two little croutons under the cheese. The soup was WONDERFUL and worth every calorie.
1/2 rack of ribs: I got a full rack to take home leftovers. I did NOT touch the potato! This is amazing since I love baked potatoes. But I truly enjoyed my ribs.
I drank four big glasses of water with my meal!

I did not track my calories today (shame, shame) but I tried to be stingy this morning because I knew what was coming. Today was a good lesson for me. I learned that I can still enjoy going out to eat without a ton of salad dressing, bread, or potato. Leaving those things out allowed me to enjoy the food that was REALLY delicious.

Workout note: I spent over an hour trying to get my car out of its parking spot. After a lot of swearing and hitting the steering wheel, I managed to get it out. It was really icy here!

    I find it *so* hard to exercise restraint in a restaurant. I think you did *really* well. I think it's good to *enjoy* it so you don't feel cheated (and totally blow it the next time) but important to also not totally drop the ball. It sounds like you hit the right balance. emoticon

Support is wonderful

My wonderful fiance has been so supportive of me. He is a chef and he loves to cook at home; he has really been thinking of healthy meals to prepare for us. He saves the cream of (broccoli, chicken, mushroom, garlic) for his restaurant and makes the yummy broth-based Thai soups at home. He thinks that Sparkpeople is a great website and is proud of how well I've done with my daily calories.
Today I broke down again and ate a bag of popcorn (no, not the 100 calorie bag, the whole bag of butter popcorn). I put it into my calorie count for today. Good news - It didn't totally blow my count for the day since I was really stingy earlier (which may account for the popcorn attack); bad news: I feel a little defeated. But before I joined SP, I probably would have just threw in the towel for tonight and ate a million other things. Instead, I logged 35 minutes of strength training for my upper body. Wahoo!
Tomorrow it is supposed to snow here (about 9 inches) so I am looking forward to a great cardio workout shoveling out my car. I'll probably lug around my neighborhood in my snowboots for a bit as well.

    Don't feel defeated! It's one day, and it sounds like you bounced back. I try to use times like that to remind myself--eg, "Oh yeah, I really *do* need to take time for breakfast, or I'll blow it later" (that's my weakness).

Man, if I had someone around making me Thai soups.... yum, yum, yum!

I am down four pounds from my SparkPeople start date of 1/1/09! I am so excited. In celebration, I am drinking a giant glass of water and having a healthy tuna melt (one with very little cheese and lots of mustard and cayenne and paprika in the tuna).
I am convinced that tracking my calories in one of the most important parts of losing weight. It doesn't seem worth the trouble to enter tortilla chips and cheese; I'd rather see the calories stay low.

First week back at school

I guess that this week is the real test. Can I make it to the gym regularly and eat well even when I am back at work? This afternoon I was going to go to the gym but we got some freezing rain and snow, so that was a bust. I did some leg and core exercises at home, though. I didn't get the cardio in that I wanted but I'll do a little extra tomorrow.
The Biggest Loser started! So excited for this.
The new J.Crew catalog came today, and I found some really cute things that I can't wait to buy in a smaller size this spring. i think I'll keep some pictures cut out so that I have some visual motivation.
Drinking all this water is really keeping me full. Keeping track of my water will definitely help in my fitness goals.
Maybe a day off from school tomorrow and lots of work out time! Keeping my fingers crossed.

    Hey Carilouie, a lot of what you wrote resonates for me...

Today was the first day that my 2nd grader was back in school (and the 2nd day for my preschooler). Yeah, they can't just lay around in jammies doing their Legos while I'm on the Nordic Track... (Are you a teacher or a student?)

I've torn some pages out of magazines for my visual motivation thingy, and I need to glue it all up.

Day 3

I am still surprised at how quickly the calories add up. A little less cereal here, a 1/2 a banana less there...
Had some really healthy soup for lunch today. Chicken broth and veggies over rice noodles with some spicy chili oil for taste. My dessert (a serving of one of my favorite cookies) had almost as many calories as my soup!
Going to hit the gym in about an hour. It's pretty empty on a Saturday afternoon, so I have the pick of the machines and free weights. I am very determined to change my lifestyle permanently this time. I love the calorie tracker!
