Running club in the heat

Wednesday, August 05, 2009

Last night I went to run with the local running club to which I belong. I pay only $12 a year in membership, but have not taken advantage of the group runs. It was *so* hot last night and I was feeling like a nap (which I feel like a lot this summer) but I went out to run. I saw the parents of a few of my kids at school - I *love* seeing my parents when I'm running. It always feels better than when a parent sees me stuffing my face full of something at a restaurant.
So it's been a while since I've really run. We did 3.5 miles and by the end, I was about ready to keel over. This wonderful man ran with me - he was a little older - until the end. He is kind of in charge of the group. He kept saying to me "in this club, you never run alone." I apologized for running so slow, and he kept saying to me - Running is about *doing*. It's not about how fast you go; some people run fast, some people don't. That made me feel so much better! I guess it really *is* about doing. I will never be speedy, but I will always get out there and do it.
Tuesdays and Thursdays are when this group gets out and runs around town. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow night. I think this is the boost I need to help me reach my goals.

I'm so happy you are back to your running self again! When you guys run together, do you still use your headphones and listen to music, or do you chat with the others? I am interested in running with others because I've noticed that it keeps me going and also pushes my little competitive streak button which makes me run harder and faster, but I really like to run with my music blasting so I don't know how that would work out if I'm supposed to be running WITH people...

Glad you are BACK at it!

Are you kidding me?!?!?!

Tuesday, August 04, 2009

So apparently when the forecast says "sunny" it doesn't mean right where I am. It is raining. The radar map is totally clear except for the spot right over where I live. What the hell.
At 6:00 I am going running, and I hope the spot doesn't move there.

Got some stuff done today. Finished some scrapbook pages that I've been putting off, deleted some no-so-good vacation pictures, took a box to the basement, vacuumed, napped...
I'm already planning my dinner. Pasta with grape tomatoes, olives, fresh basil, and a little cheese on top. Yum!
I think it's about time to be lazy on the couch for a little bit before I get ready for my run. Oprah should be on right about now...

Sunday check-in and Monday goals

Monday, August 03, 2009

Did I do what I was supposed to yesterday?
1) Eat fruits and veggies - yes! I had a giant salad and ate 3 apples throughout the day. Red peppers and onions on the homemade pizza.
2) Water? Yes! Lots and lots.
3) Gym? Yes! I had to drag myself, but it came easier after I thought about my re-vamped goals. I'm not going to get slimmer by sleeping the day away.
4) List? Yes! I did laundry and cleaned the back door.
5) Put away a pile? Yes! I shredded some old bills and cleaned off the table so that my sweetie and I could actually eat dinner together last night.

So what am I going to do today?
1) Drink more than enough water.
2) Eat consciously at lunch today - we are going to his parents' house today for lunch; burgers on the grill (YUM!!!) and who knows what else. I am not going to let that get me down. My goals are in sight!!!
3) Swim at the gym if we get home early enough. The gym is open until 9:30, so i don't think I'll have a problem with this one.

Adjusted my trackers - I would like to lose 8 pounds by Thanksgiving. I think it calculated at .5 pounds a week. VERY do-able. And maybe once school gets started again, I can make new goals when I get back to a schedule.

August goal: lose 2 pounds. More to come, I need to think.
Happy Monday!

A blah day

Sunday, August 02, 2009

It's raining. Again. The basement is getting wet and the house is humid. Our back door is sticking because of the humidity. I want to take a nap.
OK, enough with that. Today I am going to:
1) Eat lots of fruit and veggies
2) Drink more than enough water
3) Do some upper body stuff - maybe at the gym? I'll see if I feel like trekking out in the rain. If not, I have lots of weights here.
4) Finish something on my to-do list. It will most likely involve some sort of cleaning, probably a bathroom.
5) Put away a pile or two of junk. Throw something away.

I adjusted my nutrition and fitness trackers to reflect my *actual* activity during the summer, not the activity I think I should be getting. This is kind of a cop-out, but I am going to re-adjust once I go back to school and get into a routine. I'm finding it very hard to be disciplined over the summer. Luckily, I haven't gained anything but I haven't been on track to lose anything, either. Took me a while to be able to admit that.
Anyway, off to tackle a pile!
Have a Sparky Sunday!

Ditto what Kayakid and MSGATES said below! It is just fantastic that you have set up this new daily goals system and that you are holding yourself accountable with your evening check-ins. Great strategy!

And thank you so much for your kind words about my August goals and July reflections! I am on cloud 9 today knowing that I have been a source of inspiration to some of my fellow Spark buddies!!!!!! I

Everyone has what you are calling a "blah" day.... just consider it your REST and REFOCUS day..... set yourself up for a successful week, jotting down things to accomplish during this week, books to look at, tasks to complete and workout goals to achieve! Give yourself a break and you will be amazed at how revamped you will be and ready for the new week!!

Evening check-in

Wednesday, July 29, 2009

I wrote a list this morning, goals for the day. I kept them in mind all day. So did I meet my goals?
1) Drink more than enough water: Yes! I drank a TON of water today.
2) Get to the gym this afternoon: Yes! Did a great upper body workout.
3) Eat lots of fruit and veggies: Yes! I ate a bunch of cherries and added some mixed veg and carrot to my lunch and dinner.
4) Finish something from my to-do list: Yes! Went to a homeowners' meeting tonight and asked about fixing some stuff around the house.

Making the list this morning helped me a lot. I kept in mind exactly what I needed to do today to meet my goals.
Since I am "restarting" my Sparking, I decided to update my ticker to reflect my new commitment.
Cheers to some new Sparking!

    Carrie,

I read all your blogs since China just now. I'm glad to see you ended on a positive note and really feel you're "sparkin'" again. My time in China was so physically demanding that I never thought I was NOT exercising. I came home having gained only 1 pound and I ate everything I wanted to eat while there.

I really didn't notice jet lag so much either. Perhaps it's because I never sleep well. emoticon Who knows?

Anyway, I think you stumbled on THE plan that will turn everything around for you - goalsetting! What a concept! I really enjoyed it when we commited for a week to keep and post our nutrition trackers. Being accountable for what I ate was very helpful. I've been trying to post nutrition and fitness trackers daily and have set a goal for myself to complete 10,000 fitness minutes by next summer.

Speaking of fitness minutes, I see by my Friend Feed that you just passed 1650! emoticon

I'll check in on you later this week to see how you're doing. Take care,
Dawn
