Veg out time!

Friday, July 30, 2010

For the last few years, Friday has been my total veg out night. I love to sit on the couch, have a glass of wine, and mindlessly watch TV or a movie (tonight it's The Princess Bride). I love Friday night. It's my time to unwind from the week and plan out what I'm going to work on over the weekend and the next week.

Today was a great day nutrition-wise. One thing I'm looking to tweak is my fat intake. A little peanut butter here and there really adds up. It's just so delicious and adds such great flavor to foods! I'm going to think about this one... I also decided that one of this week's goals is to get more protein into my diet. I didn't look at my past nutrition trackers yet, so I don't have a number, but I will work on that tonight and tomorrow morning. I left enough calories for a glass of wine and a chocolate-chip oatmeal cookie, so I'm pretty pleased about that.

Went to the trainer at noon today... it's so great to have someone pushing me to do things I didn't think I could do! Today she had me do half a mile on the stair climber, then the elliptical, then the treadmill. The goal was 20 minutes... I finished in about 16, so I am going to challenge myself to beat that time each time I do it. Phew!

Picked up my veggies this afternoon. Yum! Made a quick gazpacho, and for dinner I had a stir-fry with some tofu. I actually really like tofu and I figure it's a great way to get some extra protein into my diet. I suppose if there is a bright side to my honey working so much, it's that I can buy foods that I like but he doesn't care for too much (i.e. tofu). I also picked up some mahi fillets from the freezer section - they will be great with some summer squash.

It's time for a little Princess Bride and a cookie...

Hooray for the weekend!

The light at the end of the tunnel...

Thursday, July 29, 2010

So my honey has been working a lot. Like 80 hours a week a lot. It's starting to get to me... I have been down in the dumps, lazy, and feeling sad. But today my honey told me that the management *finally* hired someone else. Yahoo! Hopefully he can get trained quickly so honey and I can go back to having some days off together before school starts back up.

Today I was totally lazy. Sit on the couch, take two naps, not even go for a walk lazy. But i managed to suck it up and go for a 30 minute swim this evening. Eating was not wonderful - I *know* that I am eating to make up for honey not being here. And all things considered, I think I've been doing pretty well with my nutrition. Sigh...

But there is a light - the new guy starts on Monday, so there is reason for celebration. And it's almost the weekend, which means a new week of goals. I have managed to go non-alcoholic all week (hooray!) but I'd like a new goal for next week... I just *really* like to have a glass of wine with dinner. Hm.

Off to have some soup...

Good job on the swim. I like a glass of wine every now and then too. I try to fit it into my calorie range, but if I really feel like it and I didn't think to keep the snacks light during the day, I just have it any way.

It's just like everything else. A little bowl of ice cream won't ruin your plans. A big bowl every night, and twice on Sundays will.

Ahh, I hear you on that Carrie. Before my beau came home last week I hadn't seen him since I went to Austria. He's been on the road for literally 2 months. It stinks - I'm glad they got another guy so your honey can be back home with you. Hooray on the no wine but I think go ahead and pick that new goal for next week and then have a glass of wine with dinner. Maybe you can cut to 2 or 3 nights a week instead of 7. Oh, and I see you did take two naps - one of those must have been for me, thanks! emoticon

Awesome stuff!!! I hear ya on not getting time with the honey! My boyfriend works night shifts a LOT and with my day shifts plus night school, well, let's just say he got his hair cut two weeks ago and I didn't notice for three days as I hadn't seen him!!!

That's great news--and I agree with BobbyD. Have a glass of wine and log it. You'll work it off soon if I know you!

I did the same thing when my guy was working full time and going to school full time. I was home alone at night, munchin in front of the TV because I was bored. Glad your honey is going to be around more!

The eternal struggle.

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

The part about getting ready for a workout I hate the most is putting on the sports bra. Over the head, finagle my arms through, contort shoulders... ladies, you know what I mean. And guys, I suppose it's something like putting on a jockstrap...?

So today I went to the Champion outlet right down the street and bought some new sports bras. The ones that clasp in the back! No more struggling to get it over my head. I am SO excited. I think this will add a whole new dimension to my workouts.

It's been a good day so far. This afternoon is a little more shopping - running shoes, pillows, towels, duvet cover... and then tonight I'm going to see a friend play at a pub. Tonight will be a big challenge for me - no alcohol this week. It severely impairs my eating judgment. I will be strong!

Time to use the roller and ice up my knees... they are crying out for new shoes.

Ohh yes I love shopping!! Completely know what you are talking about, but it's not the getting in that is difficult. it's getting out when I'm all sweaty and the bra is all clingy to my sweaty skin.

Have a good shopping day!

Carrie-I too hate the darn sports bras. In the summer I just wear the running tanks with shelf bras. I figure the girls are gone since I lost the weight so might as well give up the struggle. But otherwise I still struggle. Such is the life of a runner girl! All this shopping...did you hit the lottery?

Too funny! I have Enell bras and have a different problem - the 6263737382& hooks up the front and then getting it off when you're hot and sweaty. Always something I guess. :)

Have you ever tried putting one of these on while you were still damp from the shower?!?! Talk about a workout! The whole thing rolls over itself in the back and you have to be a contortionist to get it on the right way.... then you have to do all of the moves you'd do on a normal day to adjust it - but while its sticking to you from being damp. UGH! Sometimes I contemplate the benefits of this struggle vs. the possibility of getting a black eye! lol

I so need a new sports bra (or two or three). The worst is that you have to finagle yourself when you're still half asleep! Ha!

Good luck at the pub! You'll be just fine!!

Today's to-dos

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

- Split a chicken and grill it
- make zucchini-spice bread
- clean the upstairs bathroom
- get in a workout (either some time at the gym this afternoon or running club tonight)
- drink tons of water
- post some goals around the house

One of the habits I've instilled is to walk around my neighborhood after every meal. I've been doing pretty well - I don't go when it's dark (bears) or when it's pouring rain (I don't like wet feet). But other than that, I've been doing well. It gives me great time to think about my goals and what I'm going to do for the day.

July has been a pretty sketchy month as far as goals have been concerned. I didn't really have any goals, I just kind of plodded along, doing ok with eating and fitness... it works better for me, though, if I have something I'm working toward.

Some thoughts from this morning's walk:
- Go back to school in a solid size 4 (no more of this 4/6 stuff)
- Sign up for a 5K so I have something I'm training for
- Start thinking about a plan for when I go back to school (since it takes three weeks - they say - to form a habit, I'm going to have to get back into my sleeping/workout routine pretty soon for back to school!)

I may have to revisit this blog a few times today to keep myself in check. I'm always totally gung-ho in the morning, but it tends to wane later in the day.

Off to check something off the list!

Split a chicken? LOL, I just get this visual of you running after a chicken with an ax and I can't stop laughing. emoticon

More seriously, I like the walk after dinner idea. I may have to adopt that one myself on nights that I'm home. Thanks for the idea!

New challenge

Monday, July 26, 2010

So I've been trying to come up with a nutrition challenge - a Spark buddy (COOPSM) has this great idea of sticking a dollar in a jar every time she meets a challenge for the day. I love this idea! I wanted to use this idea for myself, but I was having trouble coming up with what I would do to put money in the jar. So today I figured it out.

This week's challenge is to go alcohol-free. I had been doing really well with sticking to one glass, once a week, but now that I'm totally in "summer mode," I've been enjoying a little more than that. I have some great wine at home - went to the Finger Lakes and picked up a case of various white wine - so it's really easy to just get a glass or two at night. And alcohol has a lot of empty calories, especially white wine with all the residual sugar. Not only does alcohol have a lot of calories, but it also fools me into thinking I'm hungry when I'm not.

One glass - "I could really use something sweet." Two glasses - "I guess I *am* still a little hungry, I'll get some sushi (last night's eating)."

Yesterday I worked really hard at the gym, but probably negated most of it with last night's Dinner #2. Bleh. But the positive from this experience is that it gave me a good idea for a challenge.

So while I don't want to totally cut wine out (it's just so good, and I don't want it to go to waste), I'm going back to allowing myself a glass or two one day a week. Each day I stick to non-alcoholic beverages, I'll put $1 in the jar. I still need to determine the reward...

Carrie----you can do this.......what happens if you have wine though 2 nights?? Money coming out of the jar??? I started with 10$..and if I mess up---5$ goes to hubby......he hasn't gotten a cent yet....LOL...

Good luck! I don't drink very often, but I do enjoy my wine and beer when the occasion rises-and I often kick myself for the extra calories later-but you're right: can't let it go to waste!! :)

That is so funny - I decided last night (after a social get-together and several glasses of wine over the course of the evening) that I needed to address my alcohol consumption this week as well! I love a good glass of wine, but I certainly don't need 1 or 2 glasses a night. My waistline doesn't need it either.

Good luck to you completing your challenge - I hope you can find a good reward!

Yep those are exactly the same calories I fight - and the same habits as well. There are teams for this, with a lot of good advice you know. If you find this quest hard, you could consider joining those, if it is a piece of cake - then you are good. Some of us that have a hard time, have joined those. Lots of laughs and good comments, and great friends that all share one of two goals, go AF or to stay MOD
