What I've learned

Friday, September 24, 2010

Holy moly four days of no coffee seems like an eternity. I decided to try this little experiment this week because I just wasn't feeling it with coffee. Went with the tea. So what I've learned:

- I slept MUCH better with no coffee in the morning (which was surprising, since I don't have *that* much).
- I wasn't tired during the day - I was able to function normally.
- I got a KILLER headache on Wednesday - the worst I have ever had. Part caffeine withdrawal, part sinus infection/cold... but it was BAD.
- After I took some drugs for my headache, it got better, but I've had a dull headache ever since. Not sure what is causing it...
- Last night I decided that I was going to have some coffee this morning. I actually *wanted* it. And today it tastes delicious.

The Action Plan:
- cut back on days with caffeine, maybe alternate between caf and decaf.
- don't feel like I have to have coffee every day just because I feel like I should. I don't have to make it every day if I don't feel like it.

I am FINALLY feeling better. There's a little residual nose stuff going on, but other than that, I feel great. I'm going to spend tonight on the couch (it's Friday, so I was going to do that anyway), and drink lots of water. I am pleased that my cold only (only?) lasted one week - I think my increased overall fitness and wellness has made my immune system strong and it's able to fight stuff off a lot more quickly than if I hadn't been taking care of myself so well.

I'm glad I listened to my body and took the week off from the gym. At first I felt guilty because "you can exercise when it's above the chest!" But my body was telling me otherwise. It took a good friend to remind me to listen to my body and take care of it - not to feel guilty about it. So I feel good and I'm ready to go on Sunday. Tomorrow's workout will be walking around Washington DC at the National Book Fair. There are lots of great author signings, and I LOVE DC.

TGIF

When I first got off coffee I had the same surprising results as you did. Now I only drink coffee intermittently (like this morning) just because I want it. And, like you, I used to only have a cup a day, nothing crazy!

I find that without coffee I get more water into me!

That is a mantra I must start listening to better. Take breaks, take a day off from exercising. I too though have been feeling great and I guess attribute to a strong immune system or something. Knock on wood I haven't been sick in quite a while. I better not jinx myself. Have a nice night vegging. I will be doing that too- AND going to bed early. RACE DAY tomorrow.

Listening to your body is a good plan! Sometimes you just need some down time. You're going to get all rested up and be back at it as good as new next week! I'm glad you're feeling better!

Caffeine doesn't really keep me awake, but I can tell when I don't have it...I get the headaches, too. However, I've been pretty much away from it for a while now...I have the occasional diet pop and cup of coffee, but even then it's usually decaf.

I think you made a wise decision to listen to your body. Take care of your body and it will take care of you!

Day 4

Thursday, September 23, 2010

I can't believe I've gone all week without coffee. Since I've started drinking tea in the morning, I have been sleeping much better. When my honey comes home late from work, I hardly even wake up anymore. I haven't been hitting the snooze button as much, either.

Today I will:
- drink tons of water (cold is almost totally gone!)
- make Spanakopita
- Pack a lunch for tomorrow
- Clean out the fridge

Off to get started on my water...

More rest...

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

Still sick. I've gone through more tissues than ever.
Bleh.

Listened to my body and didn't go to the gym tonight. Looks like it's turning into a rest week... which is not necessarily a bad thing. Sleeping in tomorrow morning - need as much rest as possible.

Biggest Loser!!!!

Rest Day #2 - hooray!

Monday, September 20, 2010

I usually don't take two days in a row off from working out, but my body was begging me. And I'm glad I listened to it. Yesterday was a nice sleepy and lazy day with my honey, and my nose is so stuffy today that I would look like a total weirdo on the treadmill tonight having to breathe with my mouth wide open.
So I took tonight to make some tomato sauce. It's just like anything else - it's the getting started that's the hardest part. Once I started, I got into the chopping groove and it went by very quickly. Sigh... I didn't get around to making the Spanakopita; that will have to wait until Thursday night. But everything will be okay until then.

Good news for the day - my car's service cost significantly less than I thought it would. It was time for its 100K mile service, which I thought would cost a few hundred dollars. It was only $75! Turns out that since I paid for the timing belt and water pump 20K miles ago, those parts didn't have to be replaced today. Yahoo! Life is good. I was feeling so good about it that I didn't even charge it to my credit card. No sense in paying it next month when I can pay for it now.

Tomato sauce is done and cooling. Clothes for the week are ready. Lunch and gym clothes for tomorrow are packed, so I think I'm ready for some quality couch time. I need a little more laziness before I go back to school tomorrow (today was an in-service).

Not that I run on treadmills much, but if I had to do it with my mouth closed I'd be even less inclined to climb up on one of those things. I breath through my mouth, nose, and ears while running.

Hope you feel better soon.

School is so germy! My nose is stuffed up too, and over the weekend I had a sore throat and lots of fatigue.

An in service day is so much easier to take off than a school day, the perfect time to regroup and be ready for the week with children.

Sunday's To-Dos did not get done.

Sunday, September 19, 2010

Woke up today and felt worse than yesterday... so I took it easy. I did manage to freeze some squash, which was a big thing. Took my car to get its 100K mile work done, watched some football (the Eagles barely eked it out today) and then the last 1/2 of the 9th inning of the Phillies game, which was apparently the best part. Go Phils!
It was exciting to see Michael Vick run... there was some good stuff in there.

Drank tons of water today, had some really delish vanilla tea with honey and lemon, and now it's off to the couch with a glass of wine while honey makes dinner. Hopefully the Motrin will kick in soon and rid me of this slight fever. Bleh.

Thinking about cutting back on the coffee... it hasn't been doing it for me lately (I have NO idea why) so I'm going to see what happens if I cut back.

In-service tomorrow... no kids means another day of resting my voice. Hooray! Not "hooray," though, is wondering how much my car is going to cost tomorrow. I'm assuming that the 100K mile thing is pretty pricey, though. Still cheaper than a new car.

Couch + football + sweatpants + wine = a very lovely evening.
