Ironically, the joyous 'holidays' happen to fall at what has been a very difficult time in my life in years past.
It was 10 years ago that set in motion a chain of events that would forever change my life. All the major stressors that could happen (loss of marriage, loss of home, loss of job, betrayal by best friend, loss of friends, turning the big 5-0, a move across country, new job, car wreck, major injury, loss of two loved ones) did happen to me, all within a few short months.
It took many years for me to crawl out from under that rock, but I have. And at this time of year, I chose not to look back and crawl back under that rock. (It would be very easy because NOT one bit of it was fair or without pain and residual effects.)
TODAY and each new day, I make the decision to look forward.
I chose to be thankful for those things and although I don't claim to understand WHY they happened, I do know that they have played a big part in evolving me into the person I am today. (Warts and all! )
I am so blessed and thankful for my journey.
And I am especially thankful for SparkPeople and each of my SparkFriends for encouraging me on to be the best that I can be.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!

No camera could capture his spunky-ness, especially when I'm on the floor doing my ab workout. By the end, he had me laughing so hard, I could hardly breathe!!! Guess Bad Leroy Brown (our 6 pound, 7 year old Yorkie) was my inspiration and motivation to keep going this morning.
The day began and I had no energy. It's not often that I can't reach down deep inside and pull out some motivation . . . but it wasn't happening this morning. Finally talked myself into looking for a couple of Coach Nichole's 10 minute core routines. Especially since we're escaping to the coast for Thanksgiving and I probably won't get a lot of work out opportunities.
(I'm still finding my way around SP and half the time I can't find what I'm looking for.) I came across Kathy Smith's 20 yoga/pilates video and a 10 min of yoga fusion video. I've done them before and liked them, so I did 'em again.
After I finished, I thought I'd try to remember some of the movements and work them into my fav ab routine so I could take 'em with me this weekend.
So, here I am on the floor.... and Leroy thinks it's time to romp.
When my hand goes this direction for a side stretch, what does he do but chase it and try to sit on it. Now I do the stretch on the other side . . . same thing, off he goes. Woof! he's got me again. This goes on with my every move for 10 minutes. Time to cool down.
Woof! I look and his head is on his front paws down on the floor with his tail sticking straight up -- a downward facing dog if I've ever seen it! The real thing.
My little buddy and fav workout partner!

It's been 6 weeks since the last appt with my Doctor. This morning when he looked at my chart, I noticed that he thumbed back at my last visit, and then the one before that one. Then he did it again.
"Okay, how did you do it? You've lost 12 pounds in 6 weeks!"
I told him I've been using SparkPeople's nutrition and fitness trackers, and explained how the program works.
"How much does it cost?"
When I replied "Free", he reached into the drawer for a pen and paper.
"How do you spell that? I have some patients who need to know about this."

I love today's SparkCoach comment by Coach Nichole: A true lifestyle change lasts well into the future by incorporating diet, fitness and other health habits that fit into your life for the long haul.
How true. How many times have I really wanted to change my lifestyle for the better but didn't have the tools. Merely "wanting to" didn't get it done. I had the desire, the motivation, the time, even the right food and exercise equipment. But I didn't know how to put it together for success.
This past weekend, I decided I wanted to paint the kitchen. I had the desire, the motivation, the time. I've certainly painted enough walls before, so I knew how to do it. But I lacked the necessary stuff: paint, brush, roller, tape, drop cloth, etc.
Well, hubby jumped at my suggestion. Within one hour, he supplied the paint and more than enough equipment for me to get the job done. (He even offered to help.)
There it was: the formula for success -- the right stuff at the right place at the right time.
When applying this to my lifestyle improvement attempts in the past, I've had the desire, the motivation and the time. But something was missing. I didn't know what it was.
It's just as though SparkPeople heard my plea and has given me the rest of the right stuff at the right time to complete the formula for success.
In a month and a half, I've lost 13 pounds and am half way to my goal!

Today's SparkCoach lesson was "Beat Stress Weigh Less" and how stress sets us up to gain weight.
Earlier today while sorting through a stack of papers in my desk, I found a journal entry I made in March of this year, rehearsing all the drama I was dealing with at the time. BINGO! I hit 3 out of the major 4 stressors. So, I did a Stress Test and scored 458 (where 0-149 is low; 150-299 is medium and 300 up is high susceptibility to stress related illness).
Anyway, I am SO thankful that most of those stressors have been eliminated (or I have found other ways to deal with them).
I am on a great plan for losing weight and regaining my health . . . and I am feeling better every day.
Thank you SparkFriends for sharing your experiences and being such an important part of my journey.
