I was sorry to hear about the fire yesterday but relieved to know it wasn't at Spark central.
What kinda of 'health' thoughts passed through your mind when you found out that the SparkPeople server was down?
I have to admit my curiosity was triggered by the responses on Facebook, such as "Oh, good! now I can eat what I want!" and "If I can't track, how will I know what I can eat?"
I'm hoping those comments were intended to be funny. It'd be scary to think they were serious....
I did come to realize, however, how helpful the Spark resources are and how much I'd miss them if they weren't available. I am still amazed that this awesome service and all the helpful tools - not to mention the awesome community of SparkFriends - are available to us without cost!
Anyway, yesterday was rather bitter sweet. Mostly sweet - in that I was able to get a lot done, especially going through the boxes of papers that I have to sort. It was very therapeutic, healing and eye opening for me.
The bitter was that one of the fish in our big aquarium died. We'd had her (?) for several years - a big fancy tailed Oranda that we named Lucy because of her big red head.
Yeah, she was just a fish . . . but a great source of entertainment.
She had a cavernous mouth that could easily swallow just about anything - including a Corey Catfish . . . cos we had to do surgery to remove the one we found with it's tail sticking out of her mouth one morning last year.
Hope you have a wonderful day! The weekend is almost here!!!

Two old life long friends, Charlie and Bernie go into a bakery shop.
Charlie steals 3 pastries and puts them in his pocket.
He says to Bernie, "See how good I am? The owner didn't see a thing!"
Bernie then says, "I am going to show you there is nobody better than me."
He goes to the owner and says,"Give me a pastry and I will show you a magic trick."
Intrigued, the owner accepts and gives him a pastry.
Bernie swallows it and asks for another one.
The owner gives him another one.
Then Bernie asks for another one and swallows it as well.
The owner starts to wonder where the magic trick is and says,
"What the hell did you do with my pastries?"
Bernie answers, .......... "Look in his pocket."

Not an official weigh -in day (so I'm not going to record it, just in case it's the scales again! ) but this morning I was down almost 3 pounds from last week.
I've been really busy just doing 'stuff' around the house. One project I've been working on for about a year is cleaning out the 'dungeon', what will be my downstairs play room. It has my sewing machine, art and craft stuff, as well as all the boxes of files, paperwork, clothes, sundry items, that need sorting and either incorporated into our living inventory or tossed.
In one of my past lives, I was a writer. For nearly 20 years, I researched and wrote articles and books and stuff like that. When that chapter of my life came to an abrupt end, everything was packed away into file boxes. A lot of it can be tossed (like most of the research and article in progress), but there is a significant amount that has to be sorted with discretion (legal stuff like corporate and probate stuff). I've already shredded a ton of stuff. A couple of years ago, I had a big bon fire and burned a ton of old paperwork, extra copies of the books and articles I'd written. Now it's down to the final few boxes.
I'm thinking it will be a positive, healing process, to finalize my former 'life'. It seems that as long as the stuff in boxes is sitting there, that part of my life hasn't yet been put to rest. I'm ready for that to happen.
Another project is making a cozy little nook on my back porch where I can sit and read or just watch and listen to the birds. The spot I chose looks out over the existing original and overflow ponds, and will be right above the lower pond that I'm digging out right now. It's a slow project but it's fun to get my creative juices flowing again. Fun stuff.
Of course, I can't find it when I want it . . .
but my motivation quote for today is:
Do something today
that your future self
will thank you for.

(Did ya get it?)

So, I was out running errands this morning
and taking care of some not-so-fun business
and ended up in town longer than intended.
I decided I'd go ahead and eat lunch in town.
So I began to consider what i was going to
have as my unscheduled 'cheat' meal.
(An away from home meal always feels
like cheating to me!)
I totally went in blind, not being able to check for
nutritional info beforehand, and maybe I wanted to
see if I could rely on my powers of discernment
alone to make a healthy choice.
I chose a Subway Club on wheat.
(No, not a veggie delight!)
I also wanted a diet soda and when asked
if I wanted to make it a meal, I said yes.
Oops. That's where I hadn't thought ahead . . . .
Yes, I wanted a diet soda (which in itself is a splurge)
but the next question was
'Would you like cookies or chips?'
I considered those cookies right there,
within reach . . . right in front of my eyes.
They looked so sweet and greasy.
So I answered 'chips'.
Oh dear, I turned around and found myself
looking at a rack of a dozen different
types of chips . . .
now what do I do?
I selected the baked BBQ chips.
I took my time and savored every morsel!
And yes, the chips were yummy.
It's been months and months since I'd had chips.
Oh, and the sandwich was great too!
Now that I'm home and tracking my meal,
I find 3 different calorie counts for the chips
(Subway's site differs from the Lay's site
and both differ from SparkPeople's).
But even taking the highest of the counts,
I still did better with the chips than if I'd
gone with ONE chocolate chip cookie.
(I think the meal deal would have been 2 cookies!)
The weird thing is, now I'm craving sweets.
Could it be a combined reaction from the
salt, carbs & fat???
So, yes, a bag of chips.
And a pat on my own back for making,
maybe not the BEST choice,
but a not-so-bad choice after all.
