50th Anniversary of the March on Washington

Wednesday, August 28, 2013

I went to Washington DC Saturday August 24 for the observance, but the actual anniversary is today.
The entire "I Have A Dream" speech will be broadcast on MSNBC at 8pm

Here are a few photos from the original march in 1963

(Most of my pictures from Saturday were too large to load.)

Let's all work to make our great country live up to Dr. King's Dream.
Wishing PEACE to the world.

Would that we were much farther along on Dr. King's dream than we are, but we ARE making progress.

June!

Saturday, June 01, 2013

Okay, I admit it.
I've made excuses.
I caught a cold and used it as an excuse not to exercise or even go out (I didn't want to make anyone else sick).
It is not getting me closer to my goals.

SO
June is here.
I wrote out the daily goals and posted them - with a checklist.
I'm determined to greet more sunrises this month.
I calculated how many pounds til I am no longer obese and I can get there at one pound a week by the end of the year.
I looked up the half marathon date here, and it is 20 weeks from today.
I ate my oatmeal for breakfast.
I visualized reaching my goals.
I believe I can do it.

I lean on my SparkFriends and their wonderful accomplishments and fantastic attitudes and trust the process.
Focusing on all I will GAIN (in nonscale victories, health and good habits)
instead of what I will LOSE (not freaking myself out by images of deprivation).

Time to get started.
Time to make it happen.

This reminds me of how I felt last weekend. I found out that a dear, sweet, precious family from our church is moving away. At first, I was only focused on what I was losing. But then, I was able to focus on what they were gaining, what their new community would be gaining, and finally even what I might be gaining in the long run. It took me a day or so, but I was able to see that even when the Lord takes away, He always gives to us even more & better things than we could ever wish for ourselves! So I continue to trust in Him and "praise the Lord who gives & takes away"! (one of my favorite song verses from one of my favorite bands, Casting Crowns!)

Celebrate the small victories! ôRemember that fitness is more like a marathon than a sprint set small weekly or monthly goals

I like your plan taking six months to get your weight off slow is the way to go i learned this the hard way. so that is my plan now too

60 Day Challenge at my gym

Friday, May 03, 2013

I've signed up and had my fitness testing on Monday. The tests included blood pressure and heart rate (pulse), body fat measurements by calipers, waist:hip measurements by tape, BMI (height and weight), a 6 minute run (and walk), pushups (modified), squat test, balance assessement, and my total fitness score. It did not include flexibility measurements.
The areas that need the most improvement are the body fat followed by aerobic fitness. Fortunately, no knee problems and my back and shoulder are behaving.

I was then given a strength training routine using the Perfect Fit Now program.
Here is my routine:
*Squats holding a medicine ball against my chest
*Posterior lunges with a medicine ball held overhead
*Hamstring curls in a bridge position on the stability ball
(I'm not coordinated or strong enough to do both, so I am doing bridges and curls separately)
*Modified pushups on my knees
*Lunge with lat row on cable machine
*Biceps curls on cable machine
*Triceps extensions on cable machine with reverse grip
*Triceps extensions on cable machine using rope
*Posterior deltoid low pull with cable
*Cable horizontal trunk rotation
*Cable reverse wood chops
*Crunches on the stability ball

I did the workout for the first time Thursday and was drenched in sweat by the end.

We also outlined my cardio, qi gong, and mindfulness schedule each week.
Yoga I can add as desired.
I need to do an hour of cardio at least 5 days a week.

Will keep you updated on my progress!
