food deceptions

Tuesday, April 01, 2014

I stopped by Peet's to get some tea this morning and the pastries called to me. I bypassed the large scones - even the fat free vegan one and got one small slice of hummingbird cake. Sounds light and small, right? Soooo wrong! It's 500 calories! Yes, that's right, 500 calories! The low fat vegan scone (about twice the size) would have been 290 calories. Now the silly part of all this is I could have accessed nutritional information on my smart phone and figured it all out. Lesson learned. Take the time to step away from the bakery case and look at the information! Better yet - eat at home and have a full stomach when buying a large tea!

We've had rain the past few weeks and the air is fresh and clean. I was lucky enough to time it between showers to get out and weed. Great exercise and it feels so productive to see most of a flowerbed de-weeded. I kept thinking that some of these might be great salad food, but I don't know which ones. Hmmm... might be something to explore...

Stress eating

Tuesday, March 25, 2014

Lots of changes at work. Seems like attune weekly meeting there is always chocolate out to soften the blow. Today it was chocolate chips and gummy bears. Why did I ever eat any? I don't even like them! The more extra work they heap on, the more you see people reaching forth elbows ofchocolat. I need to walk in better prepared next week. Bring a yogurt or nuts orsomething...

Yum - new recipe

Monday, March 24, 2014

When I am really eating as I should be, real food is so delicious. I had the time to try a new recipe for a whole chicken in a crockpot. You take a lot of different spices, paprika being one of them and rub it all over the chicken, including adding some to the cavity. Chop one onion and several cloves of garlic and put in the bottom of the crockpot. Place the rubbed chicken on top and cook on high for 5 hours. The family loved it for dinner. I have leftovers for 2 days worth of salads for lunch. Instead of gravy, I strained the liquids and skimmed the fat. We used the "au jus" for the chicken, which was so flavorful from the onions and garlic. Yum. So glad I tried something new.

baseball field walk

Sunday, March 23, 2014

I found a great way to use my time while my son is warming up for a baseball game. I take a walk around the edges of the field. I finish up right before the game and then get to enjoy his game after my mini workout. It's a win-win, no matter what the score ends up being!
