Pedometer Help!

Monday, August 10, 2009

I decided to try using a pedometer but have found it to be very inaccurate. I read the directions and attached it to my waistband as directed. I tested it with my Wii free step and found it only registerd 1/3 of my steps. My daughter told me to wear it by my ankle, so I attached it to my shoe. I found that to be so uncomfortable I didn't even test it. Any advice???

Unfortunately, some of the cheaper models just aren't reliable! I have had great luck with Omron too! Here is the information if you are interested in looking at it. The shipping from the web site was free! Not a bad deal, I used www.pricegrabber.com and this was the cheapest.
Hope this helps,
Michelle

I also have an Omron that I love. Word of warning--remove from your pants pocket before putting them in the wash. Sometimes when I don't have pockets, I clip it to my bra and tuck it between my boobs. What ever you do, don't let it swing free or rest at a 45 degree angle-- it doesn't record accurately in those positions.

    Pedometers can be temperamental...
First, you have to set your stride as BAMANANA08 mentioned, then you have to know that some of them do not register steps when you are walking too slowly, when you are going up (or down) stairs, when you are walking irregularly, and when you are walking without lifting your feet enough from the ground...
That said, they are great.
The one I use is the OMRON HJ-112 - it is very accurate and it keep s track of the past 7 days, and it resets itself automatically at midnight (among other things).

Did you measure your steps and set it to the number of steps you take in so many feet? Everyones stride is different, so you might want to look at that. My daughter adn I both have one and ours are set at different strides. Good luck in getting it to work, if it doesn't want to work take it back. emoticon

Extra Benefits

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

When I joined the SparkPeople program it was with the idea of getting healthier, mygoal was to lose weight and have more energy. As I got into the program, I slowly began to increase the type of exercise and the amount of time I exercised. The different exercises I found on several of the other team page challenges helped me to diversify my workouts and make them fun (my Wii Mii still calls me names every morning). So I was pleased with myself when I went to the doctor's on Monday because I knew the scale would reflect my efforts. I was also somewhat apprehensive as I had been given an ultimatum the last time I was there to start bringing my cholesterol down or begin taking medication. I was hoping that I had a decrease of several points or at least enough to stay off of medication. Imagine my surprise to find I had lowered my overall number by 58 points, into normal range. I am loving this program.

Tracking

Monday, May 11, 2009

I am really enjoying the nutrition and fitness trackers. I have found it very informing and surprising. Now that I realize how much that extra snack or serving are adding to my weight, I have begun to think twice about them. It was also eye opening to realize how much exercise I had to do to work them off.
