Dog Training

Saturday, September 27, 2014

So, I leave for two days and the dog forgets how to walk on a leash properly.

Well, I only started the training on Sunday of last week, but still!!!!

And he thinks, wrongly, that he will get a treat for every "click" - HA!!

Back to the basics.

Be patient and don't give up. If you need more treats, it's ok. He'll get there, I promise!

Home again

Friday, September 26, 2014

And it is nice to be home again.

SLEEP in on the agenda.

I had to treat Benson for roundworms when I got home. But, he took his medicine easily.

We will see how fast it works!

Cleveland

Thursday, September 25, 2014

I am in Cleveland for two days of Continuing Legal Education.

I like Cleveland. Yes, i know there are dangerous areas.

But . . . Here at the center of the city, Playhouse Square is a pretty nice area. There are live musicians playing music, at least during the summer/fall in the out-of-doors, and there is no admission price.

Yesterday was a salsa band (very good, too) and people were dancing in the quad area. Really nice to see.

Today there was a farmer's market with some intriguing items. And a live musician group playing quietly in the background.

Next year, same time, I plan to be back!

I'll be getting a full day of CLE in San Francisco next month. Can't wait for the learning (e-discovery) and for the fun!

A bloody difficult day . . .

Tuesday, September 23, 2014

But fulfilling.

I had a permanent custody to the state trial at 9 am. It ran until 12:30. Mom in prison until late 2014. Grandmother, former legal custodian, in prison until 2018. Great grandmother, with no prior history with the case, visitation, or a motion for custody, was pulled in by defense counsel to present herself as a suitable placement.

The agency had spoken to her on a number of occasions, and although she is a delightful person, she has (1) way too many illnesses and prescribed medications, and (2) never expressed a serious desire to become the permanent caretake of this child. In fact, she and her fellow family members BELIEVED that the child's grandmother will get a judicial release and be ready to take the child back in early March 2015. Our statutory two years is up in mid February 2015.

The whole family thought, for some reason, that it was OK to have a 2 year old cerebral palsy child remain in the custody of the agency for a couple of years! Only to have a prison bird get out an take custody back.

So sad. They blame the agency. And are angry that there is a great therapeutic foster family caring for the child.

There is a whole lot more to this story, and I wish it could have been different.

I will await the written decision.

I hope the best circumstance for the child can be agreed upon by all parties, a long shot, but I still hope. This one hits a bit close to home for me.

It must be a very difficult part of your job to see such bad decisions and cluelessness from those who should be protectors and nurturers of their precious children. Thanks for taking the children's part.
