Well- I think it is time for an update given that I have weaned myself off my BodyBugg. And don’t you know it. I lost 2.4 pounds last week. My focus has shifted. I am now focusing on my food and my exercise and not on all the numbers.

I did restart South Beach Phase 1 to flush out all the fruit that I have been consuming. I was totally out of control. There is too much of a good thing. I was devouring cherries, plums, peaches and nectarines every day. Fruit is definitely a trigger food for me. I lost control. I just realized that.

I have totally focuses on creative ways to have more veggies for my snacks. I have eaten more vegetables this week than any time before. And I have always consumed a lot of vegetables. I have vegetables 6 times a day. Zucchini and tomatoes with my egg whites in the morning; a huge salad for lunch with baby greens or spinach, chopped red pepper, chopped red cabbage, chopped tomatoes some feta and tuna/chicken/grilled salmon. I love my salads. Dinner is 2 or three kinds of vegetables with some protein thrown in. Snacks are grape tomatoes, baby bell peppers, Persian cucumbers, some nuts, hummus, string cheese etc.

I am training with my personal trainer twice a week now- up from once. And I started Bikram yoga with my much younger cousins who are always up to trying something new. I want to try spinning next. I even started taking Zumba on Sundays the last few weeks.

And last but not least, I have tried to focus on sleeping more. I realized that I was catching an average of 5 hours a night and then collapsing on Friday nights. My husband is in charge of shooing me upstairs at 10. I get up anywhere between 4:30 and 5 am on weekdays, so sleeping by 10:30 is a must.
So, this is the new refocused me. I have a lot of obstacles ahead- a trip to Germany in a few weeks, lengthy family visits starting mid-September, and the holidays are not that far away. I will have to recalibrate between now and the end of the year. Some weeks are going to be better than others.

Let the new week begin!

Congratulations on getting back to a plan!

I have a tendency to also eat way too many fruits. I let myself eat three a day, but I was finding that when I ate something like cherries I was snacking on them until the bowl was gone. Too much of a good thing.

How are you liking the Bikram yoga?
Are you still running?

Congrats on the weight loss!!! You must feel great too, with all those healthy salads and yummy veggies!! I LOVE love LOVE fruit, and it doesn't trigger any worse eating, but I've been wondering if the sugar content has been hindering my progress. I need to figure out the veggies for snacks thing too. Thanks for the inspiring blog!

P.S. Love your background pics!

It sounds like you had an excellent week1 Congrats on the weight loss!

I, on the other hand, and doing terrible and need to straighten up. I'm eating worse than I have in years and must get real. Every year when the days get shorter in the Fall my appetite gets longer. I'm not even exercising as much as I normally do which usually offsets my poor eating.

I need to follow your lead and straighten up.

Bye Bye BodyBugg- for now!

Tuesday, July 26, 2011

This may seem bizarre to some, but I have decided to put my BodyBugg in the drawer for the time being. I have been wearing the device for 17 months and have not lost an ounce. I am not blaming the device- I know it's all me. But I think that knowing how much I burn- more than I thought- has subconsciously allowed me to eat more, negating the calories burned.

So I am back to staying within my calorie range, exercising and focusing less on my daily deficit. In a strange way, I do believe that I will do better without the exact science of calories burned.

May some times a little ignorance is bliss.

Well well well I am most pleased to see a new Blog after 6 months!! lol I too have been fighting to get back on track. (with my food tracker) I can't believe you wore that Bug daily for 17 months! I don't even want to wear a bra everyday much less a device attached to my body! Hope you'll be able to relax more and yet focus better without the device.
You have made remarkable progress since you started on Spark and you are healthier than you've been in years. Always remember how far you've come when your mind entertains negative thoughts.

I have wanted a bodybugg but I tend to depend to much on my pedometer already and don't need a new addiction. I am stagnating as well. I'm not consistent nor on plan. Sloppy in fact. I need to get my groove back. Let's hope we can do it.

My First Half Marathon!

Tuesday, February 01, 2011

First here are the numbers

13.1 miles
2:45:40 time
4530 calories burned race day
43, 715 steps for the day

My cousin and a close friend accompanied me to Miami for our first half marathon. We had a slight flight delay on Friday bur were walking around South Beach a little after 9 PM taking in the sights and looking for food.

We spent most of Saturday walking around and then walked 9 blocks to the convention center to pick up our race packets. We went around 3 to meet up with the Sparkteam but I did not find a soul and went back into the Expo. We walked around for a while and bought some Gu, socks, and other little items. This was supposed to be our rest day but we ended up walking around and shopping and I logged over 20,000 steps that day.

We went to bed at 10 and set the alarm for 4 AM. We had to walk 9 blocks to catch the shuttle to the race. Once on the bus, we hit bad traffic- at 5 AM!!!- on the bridge into town and were getting anxious about the time. There was a bad accident that blocked a couple of lanes. The shuttle driver ended up letting us all off at the end of the bridge and told us we would be better off walking to the start line. The sky was dark, with a sliver of a moon and a bright star above us, and hundreds of runners around us converging on the staging area. The finish line and the bag check were 3 blocks from the start line. The blocks were long blocks and we started running to get there and to check our jackets. We were definitely warmed up by then.

We queued up at the start line and a few minutes later the race started. It only took us 10 minutes to pass the start line. We waved my cousin off since she is much younger and faster, and Teresa and I settled into our usual running routine, chatting and taking in the sights.

We made a turn an up the first bridge which was the one big incline of the race and very manageable. We passed cruise ships to our right and the sky started turning a pinkish purple as the sun was coming up.

What a magnificent course to run. We passed islands with mansions and palm trees and then were just surrounded by water and the ships. We did great heading into South Beach and the water/Gatorade stops were plentiful along the way. We even took a few pictures- who could resist. The scenery on the way back was much more residential with shorter older bridges and quiet neighborhood streets.

Teresa was coming off a knee injury so we made sure to keep a slow pace and stopped to stretch a couple of times. The race was really uneventful, beautiful and scenic until about mile 10 when I felt myself struggle. Ironically, Teresa was getting more and more pumped up and started to punch the air and respond to the crowds cheering us on. It made me laugh and after mile and more Gatorade I felt better. The last 2 miles were exhilarating. There were more crowds, I could feel the end was within reach and we were definitely not last- lol.

Teresa and I stayed together the entire race and crossed the finish line together. It was definitely getting warm and I felt bad for all those runners who made a right turn a mile before our finish line to continue for another 13.1 miles.

We met up with my cousin and stretched for a long time. There were tables and tables of bananas, bagels and cream cheese, fruit cups, protein shakes and cookies. This was the best fed racing crowd.

We took the shuttle back to Miami Beach and walked the 9 blocks back to our hotel wearing our medals and huge smiles.
The hotel crew brought us buckets of ice and we iced for quite some time before showering and heading to the beach.

I am thankful that we had brought a foam roller and tiger tail on this trip and trust me, we used them both several times a day.

It was an amazing weekend, a fabulous race and a fun time. And we had a fabulous celebratory dinner.

Yes, we do have to get together. We got some bad news about one of Rebecah's bff. She has leukemia and was rush to Hershey Friday night. They will be starting intensive radiation on Monday. So, for the time being I need to be here for Rebecah and Bree's mom. When things calm down with that we will set a date and do it. I would LOVE to meet you.

What Did I Do Right?

Wednesday, December 08, 2010

We are quick to find all sorts of faults with everything we do. I ate too much, I did not exercise enough, I devoured the box of cookies the list goes on. Well, today I want to talk about what I did right.

I planned my meals for the week.
I chopped up a fridge full of vegetables on Sunday.
I bought and cooked fish for several meals.
I avoided red meat- its not on the menu at all.
I asked my husband for a recipe idea and we made the best dinner together last night. And we had fun doing it. Very spontaneous.
I ran last night even though I did not want to exercise whatsoever. It was a shorter session but I upped the intensity.
I have been DILIGENT about tracking my food.
I stopped eating even when I wanted to eat more even fruit is dangerous in massive quantities.
I munched on celeries, baby bell peppers, baby cukes and grape tomatoes every day.
I even got some ST in since I had been slacking off there.
I drank lots and lots of water- 3 liters by 3 pm on a couple of days.
I walked 11 city blocks to lunch in freezing weather; and then walked back.
I took groceries to the basement fridge one item at a time to get some movement in.
I went to bed by 10 every night this week. This is a huge challenge for me.
I called a family member every night just to chat.

Not too shabby. Im not that bad after all.
