2014...my journey to surgery

Saturday, December 06, 2014

2014 started awesome! I was on the treadmill at least 3 times each week until the end of February. In the spring I alternated between being sick or being lazy. Two weeks before Memorial Day, the ball of my foot was in a lot of pain, this started my journey to surgery... In June I visited a podiatrist, she put me in a special foot wrap to cure what we thought was extensor and flexor tendonitis and bursitis. After two weeks, only one tendonitis was cured. On the last day of July I was given a boot for 4-6 weeks. Six weeks later when my foot still wasn't better, I had an MRI. The MRI revealed a broken sesamoid bone, torn ligaments & tendons. The recommended surgeon wasn't available to do surgery until November 3. On November 3, I had surgery on my foot. When I came out of anesthesia and the doctor visited he had good news. There was no broken sesamoid bone and he was able to fix my foot by repairing the torn ligaments and adjusting the placement of my tendons and a nerve that was being stressed by being under the sesamoid bone (not where it was supposed to be). December 6, three days and one month after surgery, I still cannot walk. I was allowed to start using crutches at Thanksgiving, so I am slowly getting used to them and allowing my foot to be down for about 15 minutes. If it starts turning purple and throbbing I put it back up but overall I am feeling much better. Yesterday I accidentally hit the pinky toe of my right foot (my only good foot) on my crutch and now it is swollen and purple. I am so clumsy! To combat the fact that I can't workout I started tracking my food intake on December 1. I want to become responsible for myself and my health once again. So, I am starting over! I started 2014 awesome, I want to end 2014 awesome!

Sesamoiditis

Sunday, October 12, 2014

On August 6, I wrote about workout depression. I was turning around my viewpoint and I wasn't going to let the tendonitis bring me down. I did pretty good with my motivation and smaller workouts until the beginning of September. It has been another two months of inactivity and I had a very rude awakening today. I had to squeeze into my fat jeans!

This is the pair of jeans that I was so excited about because they were too big for me. They were my first milestone in my weight loss journey these the last two and a half years. Now they're going to have to be a milestone all over again!

It will be an interesting ride. I have a Sesamoiditis aka... a broken sesamoid bone and torn ligament. I should be having surgery to remove the broken/dying bone and sew up the ligament in November. After that I'll be in the boot for another 3 weeks. I don't know what recovery time is, but I'm hoping I'll be jogging by February! Hopefully February isn't too optimistic, I'll know more after my first pre-op appointment on October 28.

Until then I am going to be grabbing this new motivation by the horns! I'm only going to buy fresh food, I'm going to do chair workouts so that I get some cardio in and I'm going to do awesome!

No more "workout depression"

Wednesday, August 06, 2014

After one month of 'workout depression' aka thinking...

"I cannot do this. My foot hurts. What is the point? Let me eat all the Oreos"

I have decided to get back on track. Last night I may have had an extra helping of spaghetti with avocado and cottage cheese, but I didn't follow my craving for dessert. I resisted and had more water instead!

I have capsulitis and tendonitis in my great toe joint. This brace isn't going to hold me down for the next 4-6 weeks... I did a seated core workout this morning and now I'm going to do pushups, on my knees since I can't use my toes. Anything is better than nothing right?

Gardening on the balcony!

Sunday, June 01, 2014

It has been a long time since I have submitted a blog entry, exercised regularly, or tracked my nutrition. On a more positive note, I am no longer addicted to caffeine, so I don't need coffee in the morning to wake me up. I started a garden on my balcony. I cleaned out my kitchen, so there is less crappy food. I'm really excited to start clean eating! I am excited for later this summer when I'll be able to eat the vegetables that I grew myself!

Sounds like you are making positive changes. Who says you always have to write it all down when you are too busy living your life to get to it?

Great garden!!

Love it! I've seen all kinds of container gardens. Bags, buckets, storage bins... ya gotta do what ya gotta do. It's so much better than buying it at the store taste wise and money wise. Good job!!

Thanks everyone! I'm growing one tomato plant, one zucchini plant, two bell pepper plants, and four cherry tomato plants. Three is one more pot to fill. But dragging the dirt up two flights of stairs would have been ridiculous, thank goodness for elevators!

I bought the pots on Amazon, the set of 3 green planters was around $17! It was the least expensive way to start this garden living in an apartment! They are made by Haxnicks.

Gluten, dairy free and delicious

Sunday, February 09, 2014

I made spaghetti squash in the oven, and my own really basic pesto sauce (I just blended fresh basil with olive oil) for dinner tonight. I topped it with grape tomatoes that I halved. I thought it was delicious and I was so excited that I unwittingly made a gluten and dairy free meal!
