SEPTEMBER 30...HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DAD!!!! MISSING YOU BUT LOVING YOU ALWAYS!!!

Tuesday, September 30, 2014

Today is my father's birthday although I haven't seen him in 35 years. He has been on my mind all day. Lots of happy memories of the man who raised six children by himself after my parents divorced when I was five years old. What a brave man he was taking six children, ages 8 months to 9 years. He moved us from Pennsylvania to Ohio at that time...during the summer before I turned six and ready to start first grade. We had some great times as well as sorrowful times but he provided for us although looking back as an adult, I can not image how he did it. I saw my mom one time during the years and that was at the funeral of my older sister who was ten at the time. Imogene had been sick and hospitalized for a year before her death with encephalitis, a rare brain inflammation caused by a VIRUS. We would visit her once a month but had to stand outside and look in the window at her as she lay sleeping. How hard that had to be as a parent...visiting his daughter and knowing he couldn't do anything for her other than pray.
I praise God that I was raised by my dad because the younger children that my mom had later and raised have a completely different set of values. Glad that he also made sure we all made it to Sunday School and Church every week and that I know the Lord. During the summer when I turned fourteen, dad felt that his daughters needed their mother and brought us back to Pennsylvania to live with her. It was a time when his three daughters needed ladies personal items, bras, etc. He didn't know how to discuss the changes we were going through and ignoring it didn't make it go away. He always said that was one of the hardest decision he ever had to make. Again I can not imagine. However, he visited us regularly through the years and after getting my DRIVERS license, I would drive to Ohio and visit with him on the weekends. He always said when he retired he was moving back to "the hills of Pennsylvania." He just wanted to be with his family...not only his kids but his parents and siblings also. He stayed in Ohio because of his job.
The first week in July 1979, my dad came to visit. He had shingles running from mid chest around his left side to his spine. I know now how painful that had to be but he still came for a visit because he loved seeing his family and his oldest granddaughter. I gave birth to my younger daughter on Friday, July 13, 1979. The following Friday after work, I was putting both daughters in the car for a trip to Ohio. I had received a phone car from my sister saying that dad was in the hospital. I will never forget arriving at the hospital and seeing how bad he was. He had just been diagnosed with lung cancer. The doctors operated on him and without doing anything, just closed him up. The cancer had gone too far for them to do anything. The next two and a half months were extremely difficult for me...watching him fade from a robust man of 185 pounds who never missed a day of work while raising six kids to a mere shadow of his former self at 91 pounds who was unable to do anything for himself. The sadness of that still brings me to tears.
Dad passed away October 4, 1979 just four days after his 54th birthday. Such a young age for a loving father to be taken from his family. God must have needed an angel and Dad was his chosen one. He was lent to us for a brief time and his job on Earth was completed. Praise the Lord for this wonderful man who definitely loved his family and whose children thought the sun rose and set with him.
You now have two AWESOME great-grandsons...a 20 year old Marine (Christopher) and a ten month old just learning to walk and do things for himself (Liam). PTL for both of them!
I just had to take time today and say Happy Birthday, Dad, I love you, think of you always, and most important of all...THANK YOU!!!
Be sure to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you and give them a great big hug. We are never promised tomorrow and need to take advantage of every day as our days turn into years!!! (((HUGS)))

Helen

    Dear Helen,
This is such a lovely tribute to your wonderful father. He was amazing for raising his children and then selflessly taking you to your mother when you and your sister's needed a feminine perspective. I feel for the pain he went through with shingles (I've had that twice in my life), and for the pain you all went through with the loss of Imogene, and then when your father's time came. i agree it was too young an age to be taken to heaven (my own father was 48 and my brother and I were still young children). It is so wonderful that your father's spirit lives on in you and your children and grandchildren. I'm sure he had a happy birthday in heaven watching over you all.
Blessings, love and hugs always,
Nattacia

Your father was a wonderful man who did the best he could to raise you to be strong and independent adults. A lesson to be learned with taking on the challenge of raising 6 children on his own. My challenges are so minor compared to that. Your dad was an exceptional man.

Update on Shannon

Tuesday, September 23, 2014

For those of you who were following my blogs on my nephew Shannon, I just wanted to update you on his progress. He was blinded in an accident last fall when an aerosol can exploded in a fire they were burning and had several eye surgeries.

Shannon posted this on July 5: I got to see the fireworks for the first time in a few years last night. we went to Newton Falls and they put on a fantastic show. I"m not sure if it was just because I could see but it was the best fireworks show I've ever seen. Hope the fourth was just as nice for everyone else and have a great weekend, ya'll.

Then on July 25, Shannon said:
Well family and friends, it's been seventeen years in the making but I am officially going back to school. I was just accepted into Kent State this morning. Not having been in that environment in a long time and the fact that I'm visually impaired make it kind of intimidating but I can handle it.

On August 26, Emma (Shannon's little girl) started first grade. I am not sure which one was more excited.

Liberty Bell Tolls for Independence

Saturday, July 05, 2014

I tried to post this yesterday on our Fourth of July and America's Independence Day but was having issues with SP.

Here’s a little history of the Liberty Bell:

The Pennsylvania Assembly ordered the Liberty Bell in 1751 to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of William Penn’s Charter of Privileges, the original Constitution of the state of Pennsylvania.

On Nov. 1, 1751, a letter was sent to order a bell from Whitechapel Foundry in London and to inscribe on it a passage from Leviticus: “Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants thereof – Lev. XXV X. By Order of the ASSEMBLY of the Province of PENSYLVANIA for the State House in Philada.”

The bell was hung on March 10, 1753, and cracked the first time it was struck. At the time, it was thought that the bell was too brittle. Two Philadelphia foundry workers named John Pass and John Stow were given the cracked bell to be melted down and recast. They added copper in an attempt to make the new bell less brittle.

No one liked the sound, so Pass and Stow tried again. In November, the sound still wasn’t good enough, so a new one was ordered from Whitechapel.

When the new bell arrived, it sounded no better than the other one, so the Whitechapel bell ended up in the cupola on the State House roof, and the Pass and Stow bell remained in the steeple.

The Liberty Bell tolled when Benjamin Franklin was sent to England to address Colonial grievances, it tolled when King George III ascended to the throne in 1761 and it tolled to call together the people of Philadelphia to discuss the Sugar Act in 1764 and the Stamp Act in 1765.

In October 1777, the British occupied Philadelphia. The Liberty Bell was hidden in the floorboards of the Zion Reformed Church in Allentown. According to tradition, it continued tolling for the First Continental Congress in 1774, the Battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775 and on July 8, 1776, when it summoned the citizenry for the reading of the Declaration of Independence.

However, the steeple was in bad condition, and historians today doubt the likelihood of the story. The final expansion of the crack that rendered the bell unringable was on Washington’s birthday in 1846.

The Liberty Bell was originally called the “State House Bell,” but abolitionists adopted it as a symbol and gave it the name “Liberty Bell” in 1837. In 1847, George Lippard wrote a fictional story for The Saturday Courier that told of an elderly bellman waiting in the State House steeple for word that Congress had declared independence.

Suddenly the bellman’s grandson, who was eavesdropping at the doors of Congress, yelled to him, “Ring, Grandfather! Ring!” The story captured the imagination of the people, and the Liberty Bell was forever associated with the Declaration of Independence.

Starting in the 1880s, the bell traveled to cities around the country “proclaiming liberty” and inspiring the cause of freedom. A replica of the Liberty Bell, forged in 1915, was used to promote women’s suffrage. It traveled the country with its clapper chained to its side, silent until women won the right to vote. On Sept. 25, 1920, it was brought to Independence Hall and rung in ceremonies celebrating the ratification of the 19th amendment.

Each year, the bell is gently tapped in honor of Martin Luther King Day. On every Fourth of July, at 2 p.m., children who are descendants of Declaration signers symbolically tap the Liberty Bell 13 times while bells across the nation also ring 13 times in honor of the patriots from the original 13 states.

Be sure to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you and give them a great big hug. We are never promised tomorrow and need to take advantage of every day as our days turn into years!!! (((HUGS)))

A little Election Day excitement...

Monday, May 26, 2014

We had a very long day last Tuesday at the election polls. Only 27 people showed up to vote and four of the 27 were the poll workers. We had a gas leak in the building and had to vacate. I was really glad one of our poll workers is married to a gas company employee. She called him and he reported it to the gas company and they came right out. They shut the gas off, put a red tag on their cooking stove and aired out the building. Of course there is no contingency plan for any emergency. I thought we were going to have to use the parking lot and prayed the thunderstorms would hold off. The election officials talked to our county commissions who called the fire department. It took them 45 minutes to get there (after the gas company had shut everything off) with a fire truck and a rescue squad. They only had to come half a block from the fire hall. PTL that everything turned out fine and no one was hurt.
They are supposed to be working on a contingency plan if we have any other problems in the future.
Tomorrow (May 27) I will be going to see Dr. Stoller at the Cleveland Clinic for my Alpha1 disorder. Hopefully he will have some good news for me.
Be sure to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you and give them a great big hug. We are never promised tomorrow and need to take advantage of every day as our days turn into years!!! (((HUGS)))

Whoa, a gas leak! Sounds like too much excitement for me. And I'm glad that I was not the one to try to sniff it out, since my sniffing ability is impaired now!
