Liberty Bell Tolls for Independence

Saturday, July 05, 2014

I tried to post this yesterday on our Fourth of July and America's Independence Day but was having issues with SP.

Here’s a little history of the Liberty Bell:

The Pennsylvania Assembly ordered the Liberty Bell in 1751 to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of William Penn’s Charter of Privileges, the original Constitution of the state of Pennsylvania.

On Nov. 1, 1751, a letter was sent to order a bell from Whitechapel Foundry in London and to inscribe on it a passage from Leviticus: “Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants thereof – Lev. XXV X. By Order of the ASSEMBLY of the Province of PENSYLVANIA for the State House in Philada.”

The bell was hung on March 10, 1753, and cracked the first time it was struck. At the time, it was thought that the bell was too brittle. Two Philadelphia foundry workers named John Pass and John Stow were given the cracked bell to be melted down and recast. They added copper in an attempt to make the new bell less brittle.

No one liked the sound, so Pass and Stow tried again. In November, the sound still wasn’t good enough, so a new one was ordered from Whitechapel.

When the new bell arrived, it sounded no better than the other one, so the Whitechapel bell ended up in the cupola on the State House roof, and the Pass and Stow bell remained in the steeple.

The Liberty Bell tolled when Benjamin Franklin was sent to England to address Colonial grievances, it tolled when King George III ascended to the throne in 1761 and it tolled to call together the people of Philadelphia to discuss the Sugar Act in 1764 and the Stamp Act in 1765.

In October 1777, the British occupied Philadelphia. The Liberty Bell was hidden in the floorboards of the Zion Reformed Church in Allentown. According to tradition, it continued tolling for the First Continental Congress in 1774, the Battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775 and on July 8, 1776, when it summoned the citizenry for the reading of the Declaration of Independence.

However, the steeple was in bad condition, and historians today doubt the likelihood of the story. The final expansion of the crack that rendered the bell unringable was on Washington’s birthday in 1846.

The Liberty Bell was originally called the “State House Bell,” but abolitionists adopted it as a symbol and gave it the name “Liberty Bell” in 1837. In 1847, George Lippard wrote a fictional story for The Saturday Courier that told of an elderly bellman waiting in the State House steeple for word that Congress had declared independence.

Suddenly the bellman’s grandson, who was eavesdropping at the doors of Congress, yelled to him, “Ring, Grandfather! Ring!” The story captured the imagination of the people, and the Liberty Bell was forever associated with the Declaration of Independence.

Starting in the 1880s, the bell traveled to cities around the country “proclaiming liberty” and inspiring the cause of freedom. A replica of the Liberty Bell, forged in 1915, was used to promote women’s suffrage. It traveled the country with its clapper chained to its side, silent until women won the right to vote. On Sept. 25, 1920, it was brought to Independence Hall and rung in ceremonies celebrating the ratification of the 19th amendment.

Each year, the bell is gently tapped in honor of Martin Luther King Day. On every Fourth of July, at 2 p.m., children who are descendants of Declaration signers symbolically tap the Liberty Bell 13 times while bells across the nation also ring 13 times in honor of the patriots from the original 13 states.

I remember going to Philadelphia for the first time and seeing all the sites. When I came around the corner to see the Liberty Bell I started to cry. It was totally unexpected to me to be so moved by it.

What a piece of our history. Too bad so many of us forget.

In the last two weeks, two friends of mine have lost their husbands suddenly and unexpectedly. It was so sad, both husbands died in their sleep and both were in their late fifties. We never know how long we have!! God bless you, my friend!!!!

Lovely story thank you for sharing. So glad we live in America. We have problems here but America is still the best country. I do agree with another writer about the care and treatment our Veterans are getting. But in America we can say these things and work toward a better treatment for them. Stand tall and be proud. Be proud to be an American and of our Veterans who have served our people and country. Hugs

  Helen,
History is what it is.Our Government is running OUR country the way
they want to NOT the way it WAS based and founded on our forFathers!
It is a shame the way OUR VETERANS are being treated. It really is hard
to enjoy Indepedence Day when you see the shape their lives are in.
I respect your view.Let's stand up for what is right!!!

Thank you for sharing this wonderful story. This is my second piece of learning about Independence Day this year. I heard that the Star-Spangled Banner was written as a poem and then it became an anthem when it was applied to a popular British song. Interesting.

A little Election Day excitement...

Monday, May 26, 2014

We had a very long day last Tuesday at the election polls. Only 27 people showed up to vote and four of the 27 were the poll workers. We had a gas leak in the building and had to vacate. I was really glad one of our poll workers is married to a gas company employee. She called him and he reported it to the gas company and they came right out. They shut the gas off, put a red tag on their cooking stove and aired out the building. Of course there is no contingency plan for any emergency. I thought we were going to have to use the parking lot and prayed the thunderstorms would hold off. The election officials talked to our county commissions who called the fire department. It took them 45 minutes to get there (after the gas company had shut everything off) with a fire truck and a rescue squad. They only had to come half a block from the fire hall. PTL that everything turned out fine and no one was hurt.
They are supposed to be working on a contingency plan if we have any other problems in the future.
Tomorrow (May 27) I will be going to see Dr. Stoller at the Cleveland Clinic for my Alpha1 disorder. Hopefully he will have some good news for me.
Be sure to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you and give them a great big hug. We are never promised tomorrow and need to take advantage of every day as our days turn into years!!! (((HUGS)))

Many things to be thankful for...

Saturday, May 10, 2014

Ken and I have enjoyed working in our yard today while the sun was shining brightly. Now we are in the middle of a thunderstorm with lots of rain.
Many things have been happening this month. McKenzie competed in a dance competition and her team won Grand Supreme with their routine! AWESOME!!! She was so excited she just about burst her seams. The girls work very hard every week and deserved their very high scores.

Sorry I can't rotate this picture so that you can see it properly. (I can't seem to locate the group picture.)
Several weeks ago, I was diagnosed with a genetic disorder called Alpha1 lung disorder as well as emphysema and asthma. Since it is a genetic disorder, all my brothers and sisters need to be tested as well as my two daughters. Richelle has been tested and she is a carrier. Therefore Liam had to be tested. He was tested on Tuesday along with one of my nieces from Ohio. Those results should be back in about eight days. The waiting is terrible!
They are wanting me to start enzyme infusions (one day a week for the rest of my life) to keep my lung capacity at the 70% they say I now have. I am going to Cleveland Clinic to see a pulmonary specialist who deals with Alpha1 on May 27. I feel that I need another opinion on my lung capacity as well if I should go ahead with the enzyme infusions. (According to my medical doctor I have to see a pulmonary specialist anyway so I may as well go with the best.)
Richelle's lung capacity tested at 130%. The doctor was surprised she is a runner with this lung disorder and ran in the Pittsburgh Marathon last year while she was pregnant. She says she will continue to run even though at times she does experience some difficulty breathing!
My nephew Shannon, Lisa and Emma are at Disney World in Florida this week and are having a great time. Shannon is able to see at the moment...with his bionic eye. He had to have a second cornea transplant as well as a special contact covering his eye but the greatest news of all is HE CAN SEE!!! They have to continue to do maintenance on his eye but he is just so blessed and happy to see!!! It has renewed his faith in Christ! Praise the Lord for these many blessings!!!
McKenzie is doing well in school and as a result of her great grades didn't have to go to school one day this week because she was able to go to a Pittsburgh Pirates baseball game!!!
More excitement for her and the other children. Some of the other fifth graders who didn't have such good grades were able to go on the field trip if they read a certain number of books during the month of April. They definitely had a group of very excited children on the trip. For many of them it was their first time seeing a professional baseball game in person.
Liam is growing and will be six months old on May 21. He is rolling all over the house. Starting to crawl but moves faster just rolling where he wants to go! Lol!!!

He absolutely loves his carrots and sweet potatoes. However he refuses to eat more than a taste of squash green beans, peas and spinach. She will wait and try them again another time.
Richelle is preparing to enjoy her first Mother's Day tomorrow! AWESOME and Praise the Lord for Liam.
I am waiting to hear the results of the Alpha1 tests on the rest of my family.
Happy Mother's Day to all who read my blog!!! May your blessings be too many to count!
I enjoy spending wonderful days with Richelle and Liam. Days I spend with them are beyond priceless to me. Believe me when I say that I enjoy every moment with them!
This has been a very sad week also as we have had to say goodbye to a very dear Spark Friend...Marla7. Marla lost the most weight of anyone on our Moving It team as she waited to get her kidney transplant. However the Lord saw fit to take her home this week. She leaves a large hole in the hearts of many. She was such a fighter and a inspiration to all who knew her. She loved her family beyond belief and enjoyed every moment she had with them!! She touched the lives of everyone who met her with her faith, love and terrific personality!!! Comfort is in knowing that she is no longer suffering and in pain. I have read the following quote many, many times in the last few days. "Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened." I know Marla would have loved this quote. She had the sunniest and most loving personality of anyone you would ever meet. Marla was laid to rest this afternoon. Goodbye my dearest Marla. Rest in peace.
Be sure to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you and give them a great big hug. We are never promised tomorrow and need to take advantage of every day as our days turn into years!!! (((HUGS)))
Blessings, love and hugs,
Helen
