Motivator- Tips for newbies! (And you!)

Saturday, February 15, 2014

Wow! I was totally surprised to see several emails from Spark this morning. I am humbled to be today's Spark motivator today! A little about me... I started my journey at 235, I lost almost 100 pounds in less than a year, I love The Lord, I am married to a wonderful man, we lost our first daughter at 23 weeks, we are blessed with a 13 month little girl, I was a teacher but now I stay home. SparkPeople was the key to my weight loss.

I noticed most of you checking out my page are pretty new to weight loss. I thought I would make a list of tips that helped me reach my goals.

1. You have to want to lose weight for you!
I had tried to lose weight more times than I can count. Every other time I was doing it for someone else. The last time I had just lost my baby and I wanted to be healthy. I wanted to be healthy!

2. Make small goals!
My first goal was to lose 20 pounds. I honestly didn't think I would reach that goal. However, I had commited to using Spark and I followed their suggestions. I did lose 20, 50, 75 and got to my goal of losing 95 pounds!

3. Slowly change your diet!
You can't go from eating 3,000 calories to 1,200 without feeling starved. I first figured out about how much I was eating/day and slowly lowered my calories. Most of the time I ate around 1,500 calories.

4. Find some lower calorie foods you love!
I love popcorn! I love apples, oranges, chicken, kiwi, pears, bell peppers, tomatoes, blueberries, green beans, vitatops, homemade smoothies, etc. Find what foods can be you go to foods.

5. Find some exercises you love!
I am blessed to have an elliptical at my house. I enjoy watching TV and doing the elliptical. I started slow. I did like 10 minutes, really slowly at first. At my peak ( before I got pregnant again,) I was doing 60-90 minutes at a time. I also loved Jillian Michaels videos. I never went to the gym.

6. Join Spark's social side!
I started blogging soon after I started. I made friends who kept me accountable. I found I really enjoy blogging. Read success stories.

7. Believe in yourself!
You can do this. When I first started my journey, I honestly thought it would be like every other time. Failure. I had tried to lose weight my entire life. This was the only time I was successful. I know you can do it. You have to believe it too :)

If you need any advice or help, send me a message.

You can do this!

New Goals- SparkPeople will get me there!

Friday, October 04, 2013

Last night my husband, daughter and I went shopping to find him new sandals. We were browsing around and I found a Dallas Cowboys shirt (we are huge fans) that I liked. I tried on the medium because it looked like it was running a bit small. Well the medium was too tight so I ended up getting the large. Now to some this may seem like it isn't a big deal but before my pregnancy I definitely could have fit into the medium and probably the small. I have only a couple pairs of jeans that fit me and most of my shirts are getting a little tight. So lets say last night I had a wake up call!

Having a baby and trying to get back into shape and down to pre-pregnancy weight/size is much harder than I ever anticipated. Everyone I have talked to has told me to take my time and I will eventually get there. Well its been almost 10 months since Lydia was born and my weight has been stuck at 160 for the past 5-6 months! Three years ago 160 would sound like a dream! But since I know my body works the best and is healthiest at around 140.... I need to stop making excuses.

I know why my weight is stuck. I'm still eating like I am pregnant and staying home has greatly reduced my activity level. Don't get me wrong, staying home has been an absolute blessing but something needs to change. I need to track my calories, exercise more and at a greater intensity and eat more fruits and veggies.

So I reset my goals on Spark. My new goal is to lose 20 pounds by the end of the year. I have 12 weeks so it is a goal that is attainable. I plan to do intense cardio at least 3 days a week and strength training at least 2 days a week. Attainable. I plan to fit into my jeans that are too small in 12 weeks. Attainable. I plan to be a good role model to my daughter. Attainable.

I can do this with the help of Spark and my friends. Please hold me accountable. Check up on me once in awhile to make sure I am keeping my goals a priority.

What are some goals you have been putting off?

I work out at least six days a week minimum 50 minutes, usually sixty. I do treadmill and recumbent biking in our home gym. I set the goal to not make excuses to not work out and have stuck to my goals for 65 plus days now...need to look up the exact amount of days but I know it is over 65. I have dropped or shall I say re-dropped 25 pounds. My tracker says less but I didn't start tracking right away. Exercise is the main reason I am losing and of course eating healthy food that is not laden with sugar and empty carbs. My husband has also lost quite a bit of weight too.

You sound determined to get that weight off and you have done it before so you know you can.

Another thing that has helped is making protein smoothies and eating lots of salads with protein added in, ie; leftover chicken or steak. I also load up my plate with veggies and protein and skip the empty carbs I used to eat all the time. Fresh fruit is my sweet treat now and it really does satisfy me.

Best wishes for reaching your goals. emoticon emoticon emoticon

I know the wake up call. I'm actually right there with you! I'Not from having a baby (I can't believe it's been 10 months), but a lot of stress is taking it's toll and the weight is creeping up there. It's hard... but we both know how to do this. I agree - tracking and exercise are good starts. Good luck!

    You can do it!

I have 3 children. It took me 3 years to lose the baby weight from my first.
My 2nd and 3rd children were born 13 months apart. It took me 6 years to lose the weight gained from their pregnancies. emoticon

You'll get there! emoticon

Boo Congestion!

Thursday, October 03, 2013

We had a busy September! Traveling most weekends and seeing friends and family. I was looking forward to a restful week! On Monday Lydia and I both came down with a cold. I still have a bit of congestion and Lydia's nose is still running but we are getting over it. Hopefully next week I can get back on track with diet and exercise. I haven't been eating too poorly, I just need to track my calories!

I hope your October is off to a good start. Its going to start cooling down this weekend in Nebraska! Looking forward to it.

WOOHOO I DID IT!! And you can too!

Wednesday, September 25, 2013

Well.... It looks like you all keep me accountable worked! I'm sitting here covered in sweat, heart rate up, feeling pretty proud. I could be upset that I had to stop several times or that I'm basically starting over with my fitness but I'm not!!! I took the first step which was scary and I was intimidated by failure but one step would have been a success. That first step is sooo important. If you can take that first step you are a success story. Maybe tomorrow you can take two or even 20 steps!

It took me over 16 minutes to run a mile on my elliptical. Before my pregnancy I could go 5 miles without even stopping. But that's ok!! I'll get there! I just need to commit to exercising most days. Get that heart rate up. I feel great after a good work out! I can do this and you can too!!

What are your goals? What intimidates you? What's stopping you from reaching your goals?

I'm still recovering from retina reattachment surgery--that's what's holding me back right now. So no jogging or weight training or even gardening. Wah! But I can walk--20,000 steps Tues. 12,000 Wednesday. Going to push for 15,000 today. Should be doable--I've got recess duty and I march/dance while watching the kids. I can also do a HIIT as long as I don't jog it.

Kudos to you--keep up the good work!

Way to go! You are right, the first steps will give you momentum to keep going. And you will be back at it before you know it. But don't be afraid to start small. Especially if you have a lot of competing priorities, as I'm sure you do.

Once I had kids (many years ago now) I made the mistake of taking an all or nothing view of exercise. I would do an hour or skip it completely. I gained a lot of weight that way, even though I too could run 5 miles without stopping. The problem was I didn't do it regularly. So do what you can every day. Even if you can only commit to 10 to 20 minutes daily, do that. Great when you can do more, go for it. But try for SOMETHING every day. Congrats to you for starting back so soon. Once you let it go for a while it's a long, slow road back. Trust me, I know. But still totally worth it!

Keep pushing. You can do it!

You will get back to where you were in no time. I did 9.5 miles today split between my recumbent bike and treadmill. I had gained a significant amount of weight back and was feeling pretty down but instead of throwing a pity party I did what you are doing and I have lost half of the gain back already in a couple months.

Hi Sparkers,

I hope you are all doing well and reaching your goals. I wish I could say I am reaching my goals. I still have 15 pounds to get back to me pre-pregnancy weight. I am setting a goal for tomorrow to get on the elliptical for at least 15 minutes. I think if I just do it, it will get easier. Here is a bit of depressing news... I haven't exercised since Lydia was born besides walking. Keep me accountable!

Otherwise we are doing really well. Lydia is such a sweetheart. She is so happy and smiley all the time. She really loves food. Some of her favorites are blueberries, peaches, cheese, yogurt, bananas, chicken, baby puffs, green beans, squash, Kashi blueberry waffles, peas, eggs... She likes to eat!

I am doing well with my eating but without exercise I am not going to drop this weight. I can DO this!

Here are some new pics!

Great to see your update.
