Everybody recovers at his or her own rate

Saturday, October 10, 2009

For me, day two was horrid, day three was toughing it out. Now, Saturday, fourth day after the procedure, I'm starting to feel more myself. I had a normal, healthy breakfast, and the nausea that was the bane of day two is gone. The headache and sinus swelling that was day three is much less.

I took myself off the pain pills they prescribed on day 2, after deciding they were at the root of the nausea, and just duked my way through yesterday. This morning, much more human.

Meanwhile, in sad news, as I have been recovering, I lost an aunt. My dad's sister passed away night before last. I don't yet know when services might be, but I hope I am recovered enough to dress and go.

Sorry to hear of you lose but as Doover says "Absent from the body present with the Lord" could not have been put any better.

I pray for you a speed recovery also, don't know what type of surgery you had but will keep you in my prayers.Sincerely,
Carolyn

Barb, I am so glad to hear your recovery is getting easier! We all do recover at our own pace, and the thing to remember is that even if you feel really good - DON'T OVERDO! That is the thing I have the most trouble with when I start to feel better.

I am so sorry about the loss of your aunt. Keep her memory close, and she will always be with you.

My thoughts are with you.

Shirley

I don't know what kind of surgery you had, but I wish you a speedy recovery. So sorry to hear that you lost an aunt too. When I have to attend funerals, I try to remember "Absent from the body, present with the Lord". It helps me. I wish you healthy and happy. Do Over.

Home, safe

Surgery went as the surgeon expected. He found the offending gland right where he expected it. Blood tests proved removing it solved the issue.

My kid sis is keeping me honest about "taking it easy" today, but the surgeon cleared me to take the dog for a walk as soon as tomorrow, and to see son off at the airport Sunday morning (not driving, mind you, daughter in law will drive). I will monitor to ease back in to life, and hopefully be back to work on Thursday next week.

Unexpected side benefit? The anesthesiologist told me my surgeon is board-certified plastic surgeon and to anticipate the scar will just look like a "fold". Well I've got a few others of those, I call 'em wrinkles, so one more won't be terribly disturbing.

Can't believe it's nearly a week since I updated

Tuesday, October 06, 2009

Surgery is slated for tomorrow morning. I am now home from work, left three hours early after having got loose ends tied and duties delegated. The team will do fine without me (maybe they'll decide they don't need me as bad as they thought)!

I'll probably post again on Thursday, just to let y'all know I'm home, safe, and conscious... hopefully I won't be too loopy to put together a post. I'll probably hang out on line more during recovery because they don't want me doing anything strenuous for a week: no treadmill, no weights... I'm going to be climbing walls! Fortunately I have a good book to read and some DVD's lined up to watch... but that won't be enough!

Mid-week progress

Wednesday, September 30, 2009

On the proud of myself list, yesterday I hit the 1,000,000 step mark since beginning to record for the Walk This Way program at work. The program started tracking on July 6th, so that means I've recorded those million steps in a little less than 3 months.

I got up with the alarm to take my thyroid meds this morning and stayed up to walk on the treadmill before getting ready for work. Part of this is because I made yesterday a "rest" day, so I was itching to get moving in a measurable way. Nice heart rate / cardio session.

On the good news about the not so good news front: the surgeon called yesterday afternoon to say that Monday's CT scan has clearly nailed where the offending parathyroid gland is. It's an enlarged gland, rather than an adema, and it's one of the ones on the right hand side. Knowing exactly which one they are going after makes the surgery much less complicated.

On the other hand, it's getting close and I'm starting to feel a little more stressed about it. Yeah, I know, deep breaths, relax, and, in my case, the exercise really helps keep it under control.

May your week go smoothly, keeping your priorities straight and your mind, soul, and body noursished.

Good for your, a million steps! Keep up the good work!
About your upcoming surgery, I know it's hard not to be apprehensive, but try to keep an optimistic outlook on it. I'll say a prayer for you speedy recovery.

A satisfying Sunday

Sunday, September 27, 2009

I went to the JDRF Walk for the Cure today. I walked to it, walked it, and walked home. In addition to this morning's dog walk, so about 7 1/2 miles in all, not counting walking around while there, or any to-ing and fro-ing here at home.

I cooked for myself, too... and am sitting here sipping my last warm mug of the day. Feeling calm, good, and satisfied.

I figured since I share my whines when days are tough, I'd share my joy for one that's good.
